But the Center was closed in 1971 both because its members becameinvolved in political activism and because of lack of funds. 1959: The Peace Research Institute Oslo founded by Johan Galtung in Norway. It nowhas a staff of 75 and is regarded as the world’s “oldest and most prominent peaceresearch center.” It publishes the well-respected Journal of Peace Research, andsponsors the “PRIO Annual Peace Address” to increase understanding about theconditions for peace in the world. 1963: Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York, established a Peace and JusticeStudies program in response to Pope John XXIII encyclical Pacem in Terris, on“establishing peace in truth, justice, charity and liberty.” 1966: The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute was established inStockholm. 1971: The Department of Peace and Conflict Research is established at UppsalaUniversity in Sweden. 1973: The University of Bradford in West Yorkshire, U.K., established a Department ofPeace Studies, now the largest university center in the world for peace studies andconflict resolution.1

1988: The world’s first PhD program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution was establishedat George Mason University in Virginia.Today: 388 colleges and universities worldwide grant degrees in peace studies andconflict resolution (254 programs in the U.S. and 134 in 38 other countries). The Peace and Justice Studies Association’s “Global Directory of Peace Studiesand Conflict Resolution Programs” includes not only degree-granting programs,but also minors, concentrations, and certificate programs, worldwide.
