Dean’s OverviewHarvard Medical School’s Safety, Quality, Informatics and Leadership (SQIL) program offers an exclusiveopportunity to explore the cornerstones of high-quality health care. This intensive one-year certificate programis designed to help participants develop knowledge and skills in the science and implementation of safety andquality programs in a hospital setting, which is the fundamental premise of the Institute of Medicine’s LearningHealth System concept. The exposure to top Harvard faculty, clinical experts and administrative leaders from our Harvard-affiliatedhospitals―including Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Children’sHospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital―make thisa unique learning opportunity. But, that’s not all. Two of our three program directors, Professor Charles Friedmanand Professor Aziz Sheikh from the University of Michigan and Edinburgh University, respectively, provide thisprogram with a global perspective that enriches the experience for all students. Best practices and pragmaticsolutions from different parts of the world are showcased. Students interact and learn from one another. Ourunique blended learning model is ideally suited to the busy professional, as it allows you to learn while stillworking. We anticipate that graduating students will acquire the skills and knowledge required to take their organizationto a new level of performance. Indeed, we expect graduates to become leaders in quality, safety and informatics.David H. Roberts, MDDean for External EducationHarvard Medical School

Program OverviewIn today’s complex health care environment, change is constant. Our evolving technology landscape is reshapingthe way we manage patients and engage as clinicians. Providers work to deliver high value care that is safe andfree from medical errors. As a result, high quality care, clinical efficiency and cost containment can be difficultto manage. In an effort to support this need, Harvard Medical School offers Safety, Quality, Informatics and Leadership(SQIL). This comprehensive program provides health care leaders, clinicians and administrators with the toolsneeded to become global leaders in health care delivery.WHAT IS SQIL?SQIL is a one-year certificate program consisting of three in-person, 3-day workshops; dynamic live webinars andpre-recorded lectures; and team-based peer collaboration. This highly interactive program provides participantswith direct access to the world’s leading authorities in safety, quality, clinical informatics and health leadership.Learn more about the SQIL program online at hms.harvard.edu/sqil.

Testimonials“SQIL has been invaluable to me as a physician leader.Quality and safety are the new holy grail for healthcare. Until now, I have been lost in the acronym soup ofmeeting with nursing managers and others who havemaster’s degrees in these topics. SQIL has put me in theconversation and on equal footing with non-physicianmanagers and directors when it comes to the use oftechnology and strategies to improve quality andpatient safety.”James E. Keany, MDAssociate Director, Emergency ServicesMission Hospital Regional Medical and Trauma CenterMission Viejo, California, USA“The SQIL course is an assemblage of professionals fromall over the world, which makes the workshops idealfor students to network professionally and socially andto learn from one another’s experiences of working indifferent health care systems. While a great deal of insightis gained from course faculty, even more comes from theexchange of ideas with fellow students.”Nairah Rasul-Syed, MBChBSpecialist in Family MedicineHealthpoint, Mubadala Health CareAbu Dhabi, UAE“The SQIL program attracts a truly international cohort ofhighly motivated and enthusiastic individuals from diversebackgrounds of proven prior success.
