BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2019 VOL. 102, NO. 26 COPYRIGHT 2019Peanut harvest finishes strong but with uncertainty in 2020By Jay Jonesjay.jones@agr.georgia.govr1s7a rye0vin n– 2Despite the fall peanut harvest finishing stronger than expected, economic factors are causingindustry experts to say it will be a “wait and seemarket” for farmers in 2020.The U.S. Department of Agriculture reportedan expected increase in yields of Georgia peanutsin November of 4,300 pounds per acre that wasup from October’s crop forecast. The USDA’s estimated total peanut crop in Georgia for the yearis 2.8 billion pounds, down 1.3 percent from 2018.Georgia remains the largest peanut producer in thecountry, with half of all peanuts harvested.Adam Rabinowitz, a University of Georgiaeconomist specializing in the peanut industry, said the USDA forecast was surprising given thedrought conditions parts of the state experiencedthis year. If those forecasts hold, prices for peanutcrops could drop. He added peanut farmers arelooking at a surplus in the market that stems fromthe record-breaking 2017 crop when 3.5 billionpounds harvested in Georgia.“I think it just reinforces kind of a market situation that we see right now, which is really wait andsee what happens until the final numbers come in,” A field of peanuts turned up for drying. Despite market uncertainty, economists say peanutshe said. “We’re still dealing with a glut of peanuts are still a good planting option. (GDA File Photo)1 0 0 t1h9A1 7in the industry from two years ago when there wasjust that huge production.”Rabinowitz said an adjustment in peanut supplywill be needed next year but by how much will bedetermined by several factors, including opportunities available to farmers to plant different crops.“That’s part of the challenge right now forfarmers looking for alternatives,” Rabinowitz said.“That’s your cotton and corn, but prices are just notlooking very favorable in either of those situationseither. So relatively speaking, even at lower priceson peanuts, peanuts become a better option.”Don Koehler, executive director of the Georgia Peanut Commission, said peanut farming wasa “mixed bag” where some areas did better thanothers while the drought in June and Septembercaused the most significant impact on farmers.“The September drought really set up the factthat it was extremely difficult to dig up the peanuts,” Koehler said. “Just getting the digger in theground was hard, and it wore out digger points. That affected the harvest the most. On the otherhand, farmers really got in there and dug with idealharvest weather in October.”Koehler said his biggest concern for next year isa troubling trend of farm bankruptcies in Georgia.Through September, Georgia recorded 37 farmSee PEANUT HARVEST, page 14Feral swine are a growing problem in GeorgiaAgriculture, natural resource agencies partner to help farmers mitigate damageBy Amy Carteramy.carter@agr.georgia.govPublished by the Ga. Department of AgricultureGary W. Black, CommissionerPlease deliver this paid subscription to:Mark Israel remembers the moment herealized wild hogs were an emerging threatto his Southwest Georgia farm. The epiphany struck about a dozen or so years ago as hewas leaving a meeting of the volunteer firedepartment. Friend and fellow farmer, AaronCosby, invited him along for a hog hunt.“He said, ‘I’m fixin’ to go shoot somehogs. You want to go?’ and I said, ‘Man,they ain’t no hogs around here. I’m goinghome.’ Before I could leave that fire station,he came back with six of them on the back ofhis truck,” Israel said.Since then, Israel and Cosby – who farmin Sumter and Lee counties – have teamedup on hunts that have netted anywhere from35 to 70 hogs in one night. At one time, they hunted seven farms representing about12,000 acres of row crops. They’d bag anywhere from 700 to 1,200 hogs a year. They set traps, hunt from a customizedsix-wheel, five-seat utility vehicle fitted witha racing engine, gun mount and high-powered spotlight, and run dogs through fields ofmaturing crops to roust feral hogs enjoyingthe cool shade and steady food source of irrigated plantings. This isn’t sport. It’s nothing to lose 20,000 worth of labor, seed and inputsa year to hogs, Cosby said. That’s why it’seasy to justify the many thousands of dollarsand hours of time required to mitigate thedamage feral hogs visit upon farms throughout Southwest Georgia. All just to “keep thepopulation kind of beat back,” Cosby said.2018 Farm Bill funds the fightThe U.S. Department of Agriculture isfunding a 3 million pilot program to address the problem in Southwest Georgiathanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. The FeralSwine Eradication and Control Pilot Pro-A thermal image of feral hogs rooting around in a farm field. (USDA APHIS Photo)gram – a partnership between USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service andAnimal and Plant Health Inspection Service– has granted 1.5 million each to the FlintRiver Soil and Water Conservation Districtand Tall Timbers Research Station to address the threat feral swine pose in Baker,Brooks, Calhoun, Dougherty, Grady, Terrelland Thomas counties in Georgia, and severalcounties in North Florida.“Feral swine cause significant damageto crops and grazing lands, while also impacting the health of our natural resources,”said NRCS State Conservationist TerranceO. Rudolph. “By collaborating with our partners nationally and here in Georgia, our hopeis to control this invasive species, improvingoperations for farmers while also protectingour natural resources for the future.”See FERAL SWINE, page 13
