OHSU CASEY EYE INSTITUTETwenty-five years of excellenceIn 2016, OHSU Casey Eye Institute celebrated its 25th anniversary. What began as asmall ophthalmology department in 1948 is now a major national comprehensive eyecare center, rigorous academic program and pioneering research facility. This growthwas spurred by a 1991 move to a new state-of-the-art building named for UPS foundersGeorge and James Casey. In the quarter-century since, Casey Eye Institutehas become an international leader in genetherapy, ophthalmic informatics and noninvasiveimaging technology. Some signature Casey Eye Instituteaccomplishments: First to perform gene therapy for Stargardtdisease and Usher syndrome. Identified genes that cause macular degenerationand glaucoma. Pioneered clinical trials of biologic therapiesfor uveitis. Led a study to establish the treatment ofretinopathy of prematurity. Developed OCT imaging platforms and algorithmsthat are used internationally.10Since 1991, annual patient visits have risen from12,000 to current totals of more than 132,000, andthe faculty has grown from 10 to 84. In 2016,500 candidates applied for five places in theresidency program. Our mission is to eliminate blindness througheducation, innovation and community service. In Oregon, outreach efforts include vision screeningprograms for preschoolers and underserved adults.Through partnerships in Myanmar, Thailand andAmerican Samoa, our clinicians and researchersdisseminate skills and resources across the globe.T O R E F E R A PAT I E N T F O R A C O N S U LT, C A L L : 5 0 3 ‐ 4 9 4 ‐3 0 0 0 O R 8 0 0 ‐24 5 ‐ 6 47 8Current researchServices expertiseOur researchers are exploring ways to develop andimprove treatment for glaucoma, inflammatorydiseases, macular degeneration and inheritedeye diseases. We provide several unique services to Oregon andthe surrounding region:Since 2009, our patients have been participating ingene therapy trials for retinal degenerative diseases. We currently offer more gene therapy trials (seven)than any other center in the United States and areeagerly anticipating that this promising technologyfor one disease, Leber congenital amaurosis, willprogress to an FDA-approved treatment in thenext year.We are leaders in research on the application ofbiomedical informatics to clinical ophthalmologyand computer-based image analysis forclinical diagnosis. Our COOL lab has pioneered OCT angiography, allowing us to noninvasively image the capillarieswithin the eye and transform the treatment ofglaucoma, macular degeneration and diabeticeye disease. Macular Degeneration Center: This comprehensivecenter is dedicated to research, clinical care andpatient education regarding the leading cause ofblindness in Oregon. Oregon State Elks Children’s Eye Clinic: Provides astatewide preschool vision screening program andtreatment for pediatric glaucoma, cataract andorbital and retinal diseases. Adult and child eye tumor treatment. Neuro-ophthalmology: Bridges the connectionbetween eye and brain. An Ophthalmic Informatics Center: Pioneeringtelemedicine approaches to screening anddiagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity and othereye diseases. Coordinates the use of informaticsand electronic health records in ophthalmology. Diagnostic laboratories for eye pathology andocular immunology.W W W.O H S U C A S E Y. C O M11
