Electric safetyWhen using electrical devices orworking around electricity in your homeor business, keep these safety rules inmind: Use Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters(GFCIs) in areas that may be dampor wet such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements or outdoors. Never tamper with an electric meter– it is dangerous and illegal. Never run an electrical cord under arug. The cord may short out and starta fire. Keep cords secured and out of reachof children.New metering technologyElectric and gas meters are beingupgraded throughout the AlliantEnergy Wisconsin service territorywith Advanced Metering Infrastructure(AMI). AMI is a new tool that useswireless communication, instead ofa meter reader on foot, to retrieveusage information. There is no separateservice charge for the AMI upgradewhen the technology becomesavailable to your community. Look up for overhead power lineswhen working outdoors, especiallywhen using a ladder, long-handledtools or tall equipment.7

N a t u r a lg a ss a f e t yDid you know natural gas pipelinesrun throughout your community inresidential, commercial and even ruralareas? The National TransportationSafety Board says pipelines that bringnatural gas to homes and businessesare the safest method of transportationfor natural gas. Alliant Energyencourages you to share this naturalgas safety information with people inyour household or business.Disaster preparednessPrepare and practice a disaster plan.Following a disaster, protect your familyand property by checking for naturalgas hazards. Check for the odor of gas beforeentering any area. If gas is detected, leave immediately and call AlliantEnergy at 1-800-ALLIANT. Never turn gas service backon yourself – have it done by aprofessional. Replace any appliance that has beensubmerged in water.8Knowing and preventing hazardsAlliant Energy constantly looks atnew pipeline design, construction andinspection methods to keep naturalgas safe and reliable. Our crews trainand plan for hazards to pipelines, suchas third party excavation damage, corrosion, material defects and naturalevents.Alliant Energy works with emergencyofficials and responders to understandthe risks of natural gas and the bestways to prepare, prevent and react toemergencies.Finding pipelinesUtility companiesuse markers to showapproximately wheretransmission pipelinesrun underground.Pipeline markers are typically placed atpublic road crossings, fence lines andstreet intersections.Color and format vary, but all markers provide thepipeline content, operatorname and contact phonenumber. In most cases, pipeline markers are notlocated on a natural gasdistribution system insideurban service territories.Visit the NationalPipeline Mapping Systemat npms.phmsa.dot.govto learn who operatespipelines in your area.

Recognize Do you smell anunusual odor, likea rotten egg? Do you hearblowing orhissing near a gasappliance meteror pipeline? Do you see blowing dirt, bubblingwater or unexplained dead or dyingvegetation?Respond Do not try to find or repair the leak.Pipeline right-of-wayThe area on each side of a pipelineis called the right-of-way (ROW). Theowner of the underground pipeline hasthe right to restrict certain activitieswithin that ROW – even on privateproperty. ROW locations are usuallyrecorded with counties or localmunicipalities and filed on maps.To learn more about our integritymanagement program or other naturalgas pipeline safety topics, call1-800-257-3645 or visit alliantenergy.com/pipelinesafety.Natural gas leaks – recognizeand respondAnytime you suspect a naturalgas leak, you should react like it’san emergency – leave the area andcall Alliant Energy at 1-800-ALLIANT.Although rare, natural gas leakscan be dangerous and result in anexplosion. There is no charge for a leakinvestigation service call. Leave the area and keep others awayuntil Alliant Energy allows you toreturn. Do not use a telephone or cell phone, start vehicles, turn on lights or useelectricity, (These can ignite airbornegasses or vapors.) Call 1-800-ALLIANT from a remotelocation. If you can hear gas hissing orblowing, call 911.Additional tips Natural gas is colorless and odorless,so Mercaptan is added to make itsmell like rotten eggs. Natural gas is lighter than air, so it willrise and disperse if allowed to ventfreely. Gas appliances should be checkedby a qualified professional annually.Routine inspections keep gasappliances operating safely andefficiently and also reduce risk ofexposure to the dangers of carbonmonoxide.9

N a t u r a lg a ss a f e t yHow natural gas reaches your homeThere are 2.5 million miles ofpipelines in the United States. Whennatural gas leaves production fields,it travels underground through large,high-pressure, interstate transmissionpipelines. It then reaches a localdistribution company, like AlliantEnergy, and passes through a gatestation. This station lowers the pressureand sends the natural gas throughpipelines. These pipelines, also calledmains, are typically buried understreets or along the edges of roads. Finally, from those pipelines, the naturalgas goes to homes and businessesthrough a service line, which is typicallyonly one-half inch to one inch indiameter. As soon as the gas passes througha customer’s gas meter, it becomesthe property of that customer. The homeowner is responsible forbuilding and maintaining the pipingthat the natural gas flows through toget to appliances and equipment.Gas WellheadInterstate TransmissionLineGate StationDistributionRegulatorStationynergnt EAlliaineon LsimissTranHomesBusinessesineice LDistrServibution LinSere (Main)GasMeterResid10entSiceervialHomeeLinviceLine

N a t u r a lg a ss a f e t yINSIDE YOUR HOMECarbon monoxidepoisoningCarbon monoxide isoften called the silentkiller. That’s why it’simportant to be aware ofthe symptoms of carbonmonoxide (CO) poisoning. Symptomsinclude: dizziness, shortness of breath, headaches, confusion, nausea andfainting. If you have these symptomsafter being in an enclosed area, getfresh air immediately and seek medicalattention.Protect yourself from CO poisoningby confirming that fuel-burningappliances are installed, maintained andused properly and safely. That includeshaving an annual inspection of heatingand venting equipment by a qualifiedtechnician prior to the heating season, and the use of a carbon monoxidealarm that meets current standards. If you have these symptoms afterbeing in an enclosed area, get freshair immediately and seek medicalattention.Space heater safetyGas space heaters are a safe wayto heat if they are used properly, installed by a qualified professionaland maintained correctly. Alwayshave your gas heater and ventingsystem installed professionally andaccording to code. Do not re-installused space heaters.Gasoline, flammable liquids andother combustible materials shouldnever be used indoors, and should be12stored in an approved container awayfrom appliances and other sources ofignition.Never use gasoline or otherflammable liquids in the same areaas a gas appliance or other ignitionsource. Never store gasoline inplastic milk jugs or glass containers.Talk to your children about thedangers of flammable liquidproducts. Do not use gasoline asa cleaner and do not use gasolineindoors.Hot water scald preventionMake sure yourwater heater is set to asafe temperature above120 degrees. Checkthe water temperaturebefore placing a child inthe bathtub, and neverleave a child alone or with other youngchildren in the bathtub.Interior piping and connectionsNatural gas connectors need tobe inspected regularly and replacedas needed. Certain kinds of flexibleconnectors manufactured between1970 and 1980 may fail over time andneed to be replaced. After disconnecting gas appliances, gas connectors should always beremoved and thefuel line shouldbe pluggedand capped.Remember,Alliant Energy isresponsible for gaspiping up to the meter. After the meter, the gas and piping are the responsibilityof the property owner.

OUTSIDE YOUR HOMEBe aware of corrugated stainlesssteel tubingIf your home or business was builtafter 1990, or you’ve had work doneto your natural gas system, it’s likelythat Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing(CSST) was installed. The risk involvedwith improperly installed CSST is iflightning strikes a structure containingCSST, the lightning will travel along thestructure’s natural gas piping and couldcause a leak or fire.Alliant Energy does not provideinspection service for CSSTinstallations. If you find CSST afterinspecting your home or business,Alliant Energy recommends that youcontact a licensed electrician to makesure it’s bonded and grounded properly. If you are unsure if your buildingcontains CSST, contact a buildinginspector to obtain a professionalinspection.Keep it clearSnow and ice can damage gasmeters and pipes. Use a broom tokeep gas service equipment clearduring the winter. Side wall vents forgas appliances, like a furnace or waterheater, must be cleared following amajor snow or ice storm to enableproper venting and prevent carbonmonoxide accumulation. When clearing the gas meterequipment or a sidewall vent, usea broom or your hands instead of ashovel. A strike from a shovel coulddamage the equipment.Buried fuel linesAll gas pipes downstream of the gasmeter belong to the property owner. The property owner is responsiblefor maintenance and operation of thisportion of the fuel line system.Property owners should be aware ofany buried fuel lines on their property, such as lines thatrun to a detachedbuilding, garage, grill or poolheater. Buriedpiping should beregularly checkedfor safety andinspectedfor leaks bya qualifiedtechnician. Thepiping should belocated and marked prior to digging.Digging performed near the pipe shouldbe done by hand.13
