Fresno City College 2020-2021 Catalog Addendum1Academic RegulationsChanges to Pages 20-34Earning Course and Unit CreditCredit for Prior Learning (CPL)Credit for prior learning is college credit awarded for validated college-level skills and knowledge gained outside of a collegeclassroom.This CPL definition does not include knowledge and skills already assessed and awarded credit through formal education atregionally accredited in-state and out-of-state institutions.Credit for Prior Learning CategoriesStudents may demonstrate proficiency in a course eligible for CPL and receive college credit through the approvedalternative methods for awarding credit listed below. All options may not apply for every course. The faculty determine whichmethod, if any, is appropriate for a specific course. Examination administered by other agencies Industry-recognized credential documentation Student-created portfolios Credit by examinationCPL Assessment MethodsQualified discipline faculty shall determine the CPL assessment that is appropriate for the student based on theirexperiences, and credit will be determined by qualified faculty who conduct the CPL assessment.Examination: Credit by examination is a process whereby discipline faculty administer a locally-developed exam todetermine whether a student can demonstrate sufficient mastery of the learning outcomes of that course. The college maycharge a fee.Assessment: This type of assessment can include a student developing a portfolio or completing a skills demonstration thatis evaluated by faculty. This can also include faculty evaluating a Joint Services Transcript, or developing a “cross-walk” inwhich they assess the competencies a student achieved in a prior learning experience and determine whether they matchthe student learning outcomes of a designated course. College faculty can consult credit recommendations made by theAmerican Council on Education (ACE) in assessing prior learning experiences. Once a faculty member has assessed astandard/common training, the credit recommendation can be made available for other faculty to consider for other studentswith identical credentials to prevent duplication of assessment and encourage consistency in credit for identical experiences.Students cannot be charged a fee for these types of assessments (this includes standardized tests, such as AdvancedPlacement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), CLEP, Defense Language Proficiency Test, and others).Credit for Prior Learning ProcessStep 1In consultation with a counselor, the student determines that they are eligible for CPL through an intake process.Step 2Student is referred to discipline faculty.Step 3Discipline faculty conduct the appropriate assessment.Eligibility for CPL Current students must have an education plan on file.The course for which the student is seeking credit is listed in the current college catalog.The student is not currently enrolled in the course to be challenged past census date.Credit by Examination:o The student is registered in the district and not currently enrolled in nor received credit for a more advancedcourse in the same subject (may be waived by department).

Californiahas the highest American-Indian population in the United States, and has several Indigenous communities in our immediatearea. American Indian Studies exists to serve Indian and non-Indian students who will be working in any service field, academicor social institution. The program leading to the associate in arts degree will also provide a foundation in American IndianStudies for students wishing to pursue a higher degree in the subject at a four-year university. In recent years, several graduateprograms have begun in American-Indian Studies at universities in California and elsewhere. Student must complete 12 unitsof required basic core courses. Fresno City College 2020-2021 Catalog Addendum8AnthropologyAnthropology – Archaeology Archaeological Technician – Major #7120revised program, Spring 2021The Archaeological Technician Certificate of Achievement is a program designed to provide students with education andtraining in the various aspects of modern archaeology in preparation for 1) entry level employment, and 2) continuing educationin archaeology. An archaeological technician may work in the field doing survey or excavation or in a laboratory processingarchaeological collections, doing data entry, archival research, or other tasks related to the management of archaeologicaldata, all under the direction of a professional archaeologist. Students planning for a career in archaeology will need to earn atleast a Bachelor's degree. Therefore archaeology students are strongly encouraged to meet with a counselor about transferrequirements (IGETC/CSU certification) early in their program. The program prepares students to continue their studies towards a degree in art history or studio arts at the CaliforniaState University (CSU) and the University of California (UC) systems. Students will learn skills of analyzing art within itshistorical and cultural context using art-specific terminology and methodologies. To earn the Associate in Arts in Art History forTransfer, students must complete a maximum of 60 required semester units of CSU-transferable coursework, including eitherthe CSU-GE Breadth or IGETC requirements and 18-20 semester units within the major.
