Thursday Technical TrainingAll Day Sessions8:00-5:00pm (choose one below)Advanced Circuit & Electrical Testing (T1-AB)Ford Engine Performance (T3-AB)As an industry, we used to diagnose by simply memorizing how systems worked, followed by testsof every circuit and component until a fault was found. The primary tool for this process was the flowchart. As vehicles have become more complex, its just not a relevant or practical resource any more.ATG has led the evolution with the use of ‘high level indicators’ of faults in place of flow charts. Forexample: in our engine performance and engine management products, this means using Fuel Trim andVolumetric Efficiency not to find the fault, but rather to find the category of the fault and to rule out anytests in categories that could not be the cause. This is even more critical for electrical concerns, becauseflow charts were never written for most of the faults that can occur. Co-sponsored by ATGMore than any other manufacturer, Ford has reinvented itself in the last decade. While many of the traditionalservices are now obsolete, the new Ford emissions and engine management systems create some great diagnosisand repair opportunities. But what hasn’t gotten any better is the Ford flowchart. You need to know what thesesystems are trying to accomplish and how they monitor themselves. With this information you can ‘think’ yourway through a diagnosis in a fraction of the flowchart time. This new Ford Engine Performance class covers allengine management systems, and focuses on the following troublesome topics: false & misleading trouble codes;misfire diagnostic tips & tricks; new direct injection testing information; rear Fuel Trim in action; new naturalvacuum EVAP; Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) systems; and much more. Co-sponsored by ATGby Kris Lewisby Wally MouradianElectude Certified Training for Educators (T2-AB)Mechanical & Variable Timing & Valvetrain Diagnostics (T4-AB)Whether you’re new to Electude or seasoned veteran; come and join us for a full day of training andnetworking. Learn how to use Electude to the fullest. From setting up groups & arranging courses, toinserting your own faults & building your own lessons & quizzes; we’ll cover it all. There will be time forsharing & learning from others; how they’re using Electude in the classroom to keep students engaged.Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop & thumb drive containing various lesson materials; suchas PowerPoints, hand-outs, work sheets, and lab photos. This training is intended for Electude users(customers and trials only please). Participants will receive an Electude “Certified Trainer” certificate atthe conclusion of the course. Sponsored by ElectudeMechanical timing problems have been around as long as the internal combustion engine, but more complextiming and valve train systems have flooded the market in the last decade. Now they’re showing up in your shop, and the stakes are high. Position sensor codes are often mechanical or variable timing faults. Variable valvetiming (VVT) codes are often mechanical timing faults or lubrication issues. Even Fuel Trim, MAF, MAP, and othercodes and symptoms can be caused by a variety timing and lift faults. When it really is a VVT system fault, it’shard to tell if the root cause is an oil, solenoid, actuator, or other mechanical fault. What’s needed is a repeatablestrategy to avoid testing ‘everything’, and instead quickly eliminate possible causes. In this first class of our newATG Import Series, we’ve fine-tuned this approach to include manufacturer-specific ATG Tips for quick solutionsyou’d spend hours discovering on your own. Co-sponsored by ATGby Darcy WedelMorning Session8:00-11:30am (choose one below)Autel Maxi-SYS by Michael Flink (T5-A)Learn how to not only utilize all the capabilities of the diagnostics in Autel’s MaxiSYS, like graphing, mergegraph, min and max alarms and more. Discover how to utilize all the features and icons in the MaxiSYSdiagnostic system. Attendees will also learn tips and tricks to not only help in repairs but help you save timeand be able to communicate to you customer. Also see the newest accessories for the MaxiSYS and how theywork. Sponsored by AutelGDI Practical Diagnostic Testing - Live Car Class! by Todd Doty (T6-A)Discover not only how to test, but why to test specific systems on domestic GDI engine management systems. This live car demo class will first address how a symptom relates to a subsystem, then how to quickly test thatsubsystem, and finally how to interpret the results of the data. Symptoms discussed will include hard start,no start, poor power, misfire, and other common issues that are seen in shops today. Each procedure will bediscussed and then demonstrated live in the classroom. Understanding the links between the symptom, thesystem, and the test will create a new found efficiency to your service bay. Bring your questions and your curiosity. J-2534 and OE tools will be covered. Emphasis will be on proper procedures and successful completionof programming operations. Benefits of programming and return on investment will also be discussed. Learnthe basics of module reprogramming. Be aware of the issues technicians often fear, and how to avoid them.Successfully reprogram a vehicle when the attendee returns to the shop on Monday. The Pressure is On by Bernie Thompson (T8-A)Every decade or so a new automotive technology is discovered that is truly game changing. The use of pressuretransducers in automotive service bays is one of the most exciting discoveries of the 21st century. This technology saves time and money on a grand scale when diagnosing and repairing vehicles. The impossible diagnosisbecomes routine in your service bay. This course will teach both novice and experts tricks to make pressuretransducer diagnostics quick and easy. This course is led by one of the foremost experts in the field of pressureanalysis and is a “must take” course for the modern technician. Sponsored by WORLDPACVW Audi ODIS by John Thornton (T9-A)VW/Audi’s latest PC based scan tool uses ODIS (offboard diagnostic information system) as its diagnosticsoftware application. The factory tool uses a VAS5054A as the DLC interface. However, a J2534 tool can also beused as the hardware interface. The ability to run ODIS on a PC using a J2534 tool makes this a powerful andaffordable factory scan tool. The class will be divided into two parts: the first part will explain how to purchaseand install ODIS, the second part will go through the scan tool functions, including: navigating the ODIS window, guided fault finding, control modules tab, launching test plans, guided functions, performing adaptations, measuring valve blocks, module programming, and immobilizer work. This class is for DSO beginners to intermediate level users. The Technical Side of Hybrids by Jack Rosebro (T11-B)Join Jack Rosebro for a review of hybrid powertrain operation, diagnosis, and repair, and a discussion of thesteps a shop can take to prepare for hybrid maintenance and repair. We’ll study battery pack operation, inverterfunctions, motor-generator performance, DC-DC converter functions, and charging systems for plug-in hybridsand electric vehicles. Examples of properly and improperly diagnosed hybrids will be presented. We’ll also reviewhybrid-specific tooling available today, and differentiate the tools and equipment that are essential to fixinghybrids, the tooling that is nice to have, and the tooling that is unnecessary. The course will wrap up with a coupleof case studies of vehicles diagnosed by the instructor, and a review of the task list for the ASE L3 Light Duty Hybrid/ Electric Vehicle Specialist Test.Module Programming Part 2: Beyond the Fundamentalsby Eric Ziegler (T12-B)A continuation of “Module Programming Part I,” this class takes things a bit further. Issues such as the marriage ofmultiple modules, built-as data, RPO codes and anti-theft will be discussed. Also, OE tools can perform additionaltasks where J-2534 tools fall short. Explore some of the pitfalls and solutions to some of programming’s “not soforward” issues. This course will prepare attendees for additional procedures that may be required after a routineprogramming procedure, expose attendees to some of the “higher end” issues and prepare them to address themin their shops, and prepare students for specific issues where time may need to be spent researching information toperform a unique procedure correctly.uScope by Matt Fanslow (T13-B)Hands-on lab scope class focusing on scope control and application strategies.
