About the CPAThe CPA exam is set by the American Institute of Certified PublicAccountants (AICPA) and administered by the National Board of StateBoards of Accountancy (NASBA).CPA’s are trusted financial advisors who canhelp businesses and other organisations planand reach their financial goals. They arequalified to handle a wide variety of businessfunctions, including Chief Financial Officer,Chief Executive Officer, Finance Director aswell as consultancy roles.The AICPA has nearly 394,000 membersin 128 countries, including CPAs inbusiness and industry, public accounting,government, education, student affiliatesand international associates.394,000members in128countries4Certified Public AccountantCPA is one of the leading financialaccounting qualifications in the Middle East.The CPA credential is a license issued by oneof the 55 State Boards of Accountancy in theUnited States of America, and this can nowbe studied and examined outside the UnitedStates. Whilst the exam is uniform, licensingand certification requirements are imposedseparately by each state’s laws and thereforevary from state to state.

Getting QualifiedThe CPA designation is issued by one of the US State Boards of Accountancy. Each StateBoard of Accountancy has different requirements which must be met in order to beeligible to undertake the CPA qualification. Generally these include; A 4 year bachelors degree in accounting, financeor business A minimum of 120 credit hours to be eligible totake the CPA exams A minimum of 150 credit hours and 1-2 yearswork experience to apply for a CPA license A minimum of 24 semester hours in business, ofwhich 12 must be in accountingTo get your CPA qualification, you must meet theeligibility requirements which include passing fourexams of 3 to 4 hours each and gaining a minimumof relevant work experience.ExamsAuditing and Attestation (AUD)Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)Business Environment and Concepts (BEC)Regulation (REG) The CPA exams are made up of a mixture ifMCQ’s, task based simulations and writtenquestions The pass mark for the CPA exams is 75% Exams can be taken during the following fourtesting windows. January/February; April/May;July/August; October/November The exams can be taken at authorised testcentres in Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon and the UAEHow long does it take?How you study for your CPA exams is very flexibleand the exams can be taken in any order. Howeverfrom the date of passing your first exam you musttake and pass all 4 exams within 18 months. Thus,it is usual to complete your training programmewithin 12 -24 months. This takes into accountthe time taken to get your credentials verifiedas each state’s requirements may vary. She has beeninvolved with assurance and business advisory for variety ofclients in diverse industries from small companies to largemulti‑national companies such as Schlumberger, Lamprellplc, Lavendon plc, Al Tayer Group, Jumeirah and DubaiProperties. Mary is a specialist in the application of IFRS, USGAAP and Sarbanes Oxley 404.In the training room Mary’s vast business experience isevident in her teaching style.
