IntroductionWelcome to Tangmere Ward, we hope to make your stay aspleasant and comfortable as possible.This leaflet is designed to give you and your relatives/visitors theinformation you need about Tangmere Ward, the Hospital, and theservices we provide.If English is not your first language we can arrange for interpretingservices if necessary. This can be organised through the ward.Tangmere Ward has 5 bedded ward bays with en-suite facilities ineach bay. Most of our beds have special cots that allow you tokeep your baby close to you while you are sleeping and to allowyou access to your baby without getting out of bed. Each bed hasa pull around curtain to ensure your privacy when necessary.There is an infant feeding room where you can breast feed orexpress breast milk. We also have a small nursery where you canbath your baby.It is very important that you bring all your prescription medicines inwith you to hospital. Please hand the medicines to a member ofstaff on duty on your arrival.There are four en-suite private rooms and two non en-suite privaterooms on Tangmere Ward. These rooms are available for a smallfee however, we regret that private rooms cannot be booked inadvance and must be requested on admission. If your Midwife orObstetrician advises that a private room is desirable for clinicalreasons, you will be treated as a priority without any charge to you.Payment for these rooms will be taken during your stay via a debitor credit card.3

Introduction Cont.NB: Executive and Premier rooms are allocated according toclinical need in the first instance. Availability of an Executive/Premier room is not guaranteed and can only be confirmedwhen you are admitted to the ward. If it becomes necessary,we may ask you to vacate your room before discharge.4

Recognising Staff Cont.Please note ALL Staff will be wearing their HospitalIdentification badge. If you notice that this is not the case,please alert your Midwife or Healthcare Assistant.The Midwifery team is led by Ward Manager Karen Bennett who issupported by fully trained Midwives and Maternity HealthcareAssistants who will provide around the clock care and support,allowing you to make informed choices about your care andtreatment.The care of mothers and babies within specified bay and siderooms are allocated to Midwives at the beginning of each shift andtheir names of will be displayed within your bay/room and thenumber of staff on the ward that day will be displayed in the maincorridor.Other members of the teamDuring your stay you will come across other members of the teamall of whom have a role to play in your care and treatment. Head of Midwifery/Senior Midwifery Managers (Matron)Our Head of Midwifery or one of the Senior MidwiferyManagers will visit the ward on a regular basis and will behappy to answer any questions you might have. Medical TeamObstetricians and Paediatricians visit the ward daily to carryout examinations on you or your baby.6

Midwife CounsellorIf you would like to talk to the Midwife Counsellor about thebirth of your baby you can contact her in confidence by calling07876 475 772 or by informing your midwife. PhysiotherapistsWomen can benefit from Physiotherapy advice and treatmentboth during pregnancy and in the early post-natal period. Inaddition, pre and post-operative advice and exercises can aidrecovery. The Physiotherapist visits the ward Monday toFriday. If your stay is over a weekend and you would like tospeak to the Physio Team, please speak with a member ofstaff who will provide the team with your contact details. Bounty PhotographerThe Bounty Photographer will give you a pack containing asmall amount of toiletries when you are admitted to Tangmereor Labour ward. Before you go home another pack withinformation leaflets and baby products will be given to you.The photographer visits Tangmere Ward daily enabling you tohave a first portrait photo taken of your baby (photos arechargeable). Please let a member of the team know if you donot want a visit from Bounty. Trolley ServiceTwice a week (Monday & Friday afternoons) volunteers fromthe Friends of Chichester Hospital visit the ward with a trolleystocked with confectionary, soft drinks etc.7

Award Winning UnitAll-Party Parliamentary Group on MaternityWestern Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of theeight outstanding maternity units which have won awards from theAll-Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity (APPGM).The award recognised the team’s commitment of listening toparents who had used the service. As a result the maternity wardnow provides an opportunity for fathers/partners to stay overnightin comfy chairs enabling them to bond as a new family. We werethe first unit within Maternity to allow this in England.Care Quality Commission (CQC)During December 2015 all three sites operated by Western SussexHospitals NHS Foundation Trust were inspected by the CareQuality Commission (CQC). The purpose of these inspections is toensure that health and social care services provide people withsafe, effective, compassionate, high quality care & promote andencourage improvement.Following our visit, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS FoundationTrust was named as the third acute trust to be awarded a rating of“Outstanding” for the services we provide.Chief Inspector of Hospitals, Professor Sir Mike Richards said thisof our Trust:“Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation aspires to be one ofthe best patient-centred services in the National Health Service,with a trust-wide mantra of patients first. We found that thisambition was understood and embedded in the practice of staffacross all professions and at all levels. I congratulate the trust andall staff on this outstanding rating.”8

Partners and Visitors on the WardOur comfy recliner chairs and sofa beds (only in private rooms)allow families to stay together in the first precious hours after birthand give new mums the extra support that many tend to need.We kindly request that partners staying overnight on Tangmereward bring with them everything they will need for an overnightstay. We regret that we cannot provide washing/showeringfacilities (this is only available in private rooms with en-suites) orfood and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If yourpartner wishes to stay, please ask a member of staff for a recliningchair if you do not have one next to the bed.Partners are welcome to have a tea/coffee when we do the drinksround and there is a machine situated by the Ward entrance, we doask for a small contribution for this. Alternatively, the HospitalRestaurant offers a variety of food and beverages including CostaCoffee.Visiting TimesPartnersOpen Visiting, please refer to the guidance beside your bedAll other Visitors15.00—17.0018.30—20.00N.B: For the comfort and safety of new families, we politelyrequest that only children of the new parents visit TangmereWard and that visitors are limited to two people per bed atany one me – thank you.10

Partners and Visitors on the Ward Cont.Infection ControlInfection control is very important to us and we take this veryseriously. We encourage everyone who comes into hospital towash their hands or use the alcohol rub. Your visitors should usethe rub before entering the ward and as they leave. We ask thatyou do not allow your visitors to sit/lie on your bed.Please keep luggage to the essentials (your Community Midwifewill provide you with a list) to minimise blocking emergencywalkways in and around your cubicle and to allow our domesticteams to maintain the cleanliness of our ward. This will take placeon a daily basis.Unfortunately flowers are not allowed on the ward, this is in linewith our infection control policy.Security on the WardMembers of staff will not take your baby for any tests withoutyou or your partner in attendance. For the safety of ourpatients and their families, admission to the ward is by entryphone only. During the night the main entrance to the unit willbe locked, an entry phone is located on the wall of theentrance lobby to request access to the building from theward staff. Please do not let people follow you into thebuilding or the ward areas as you arrive or leave – you areentitled to ask that they wait for the receptionist to admit them.All staff working on or visiting the unit wear pictureidentification cards at all times.11

Meal Times and MenusBreakfast is served from 8am to 9amLunch is served from 12 noon to 1pm(Unfortunately, hot meals will only be available until 12.30pm)Supper is served from 5.30pm to 6.30pm(Unfortunately, hot meals will only be available until 6.00pm)The Housekeeper will discuss the menu options with you in themorning, and a waitress service is in operation to bring your tray toyour bed.Drinks are served throughout the day.If at anytime you feel hungry or miss your meal please let thehousekeeper or a member of staff knows; we will be happy to helpyou.Available at all times: Toast Cheese & biscuits Fruit Biscuits Tea, coffee, Hot ChocolateIf you have any special dietary requirements please let theHousekeeper know and she will be able to order your meal for you.12

Facilities & Car ParkingTerrace RestaurantThe new Terrace Restaurant is located on the first floor of themain Hospital over the link corridor and serves breakfast, lunch &dinner between: 7.15am — 7.30pm, Monday to Friday and 8.30am — 7.00pm Saturday and Sunday.The Terrace Restaurant has a salad bar, delicatessen and coffeebar and offers a full range of hot and cold snacks throughout theday.Costa CoffeeCosta Coffee is now open in the main hospital entrance and opensfrom: 7.00am—8.00pm, Monday to Friday and 8.00am—6.00pm, Saturday and SundayCosta provides a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks, sandwichesand paninis.AmigoThe convenience shop Amigo is next to Costa Coffee in the mainhospital entrance and opens from: 7.00am—8.00pm, Monday to Friday and 8.00am—6.00pm, Saturday and SundayLeague of FriendsThe League of Friends shop is now located in OutpatientsReception.Vending MachinesVending Machines are located in A&E, Main Reception,Outpatients, Chichester Treatment Centre and Antenatal Clinic.13

Facilities & Car Parking Cont.Cash MachineA cash machine is located in the main hospital reception.ChaplaincyThe hospital's Chapel is on the ground floor of the main buildingand is always open for quiet reflection or to leave a message forthe Chaplains or their team of volunteers.Clergy of various denominations visit the wards regularly and willbe happy to meet with you or your relatives if you wish. Please tella midwife if you would like to receive a visit or receive HolyCommunion on the ward.Your own minister, priest or religious leader is also welcome to visityou in hospital. Please speak to the ward staff if you would likethem to arrange this.Car ParkingThere are several patient and visitor car parks on the St Richard'sHospital site. Blue badge holders are able to park for free in thedesignated spaces but normal charges apply in the main car parks.You will receive a ticket at the barrier on entry and should pay atthe pay station before returning to your car. The ticket returned toyou at the pay station can then be used to open the exit barrier onleaving. Pay stations accept cash only, give change and have anintercom if you need help.N.B: Unfortunately pay stations do not yet accept the new 1 coinsor 5 notes. You can pay with these and on card at the car parkoffice.14

Facilities & Car Parking Cont.PaymentCharges are as follows 1.60 for up to one hour 2.60 for 1 - 2 hours 3.50 for 2 - 3 hours 4.00 for 3 - 4 hours 6.00 for 4 - 24 hoursCharges apply at all times of day and night and stays of more than24 hours are charges at the 24 hour fee plus the number ofadditional hours above that, e.g. 25 hours will cost 7.60 ( 6.00 1.60) etc.If you are dropping someone off, you can park for 15 minutes forfree.In the event of a patient being admitted to hospital for a period inexcess of 14 days the next of kin or a nominated visitor will beoffered reduced parking costs of a maximum rate of one hourcharge/visit for any further visits at St Richard’s Hospital. Pleaseask on the ward for more information.15

Important things to knowSmoking/Vaping and AlcoholSmoking and Alcohol are not permitted anywhere on the hospitalsite including the car park and hospital grounds. Please ask friendsand relatives to be respectful of other patients and visitors andleave the hospital premises if they wish to smoke.Electronic DevicesMobile Phones and other electronic devices are permitted on theward but please consider your neighbours and keep noise levels toa minimum by using headphones and ensuring mobile phones arekept on vibrate or silent.FireThe hospital fire alarms are tested on a Monday morning; you willhear a loud bell sound that will last a few minutes.In the event of a suspected fire, a loud alarm bell will sound. Allstaff are familiar with the procedure for dealing with such an event.Please wait for instructions regarding evacuation.If you suspect anything that might signal a fire, please tell amember of staff.Lost PropertyPlease try not to bring personal or valuable items intothe hospital. If you do, make sure they are clearly labelled withyour name. It is best to use an indelible marker pen or namelabels.If any of your property is lost or misplaced while you are in hospital,please contact the Ward or alternatively our Patients Affairs staffwho are responsible for lost property within the hospitals and may16

Patient FeedbackWe value your contribution to our serviceAll families using our maternity service can provide us with valuablefeedback by completing the NHS ‘Friends and Family’questionnaire. This is a national survey monitoring patientexperience.We welcome all feedback with regards to your experience withinthe Ward. If you would like to discuss your care further or feel youwould like to make a complaint please speak with the wardmanager in the first instance. We can also provide you with detailsof the Trust’s complaints procedure and PALS (Patient Advice andLiaison Service) should you feel this is necessary. The PALSservice provides confidential support, advice and information topatients, relatives and carers about services provided by the Trust.Maternity User ForumWe have a Maternity user forum which our families are welcome toattend. This forum has been developed to allow our users to playan active part in enhancing our services. The forums take placeevery three months and are at the local Family Centres. Shouldyou wish to attend please see the notice board within TangmereWard, your GP Surgery or your local Family centre; these areas willhave the details of the next meeting.Gifts and DonationsStaff are not generally allowed to receive gifts from patientshowever, small gifts of chocolates, biscuits, fruit or similar may beaccepted.Should you wish to make a charitable donation to the hospital, award or specific fund, please send this to Love your HospitalCharitable Trust, Spitalfield Lane, Chichester, West Sussex, PO196SE. Be sure to clearly state which ward or department you wouldlike the beneficiary to be.17
