(2)6.Deleted by [Act No. 36 of 2008]Amended by [Act No. 29 of 1990]; [Act No. 5 of 1999]ContraventionsContraventions are offences punishable by (a) (a) imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 days;(b)a fine not exceeding 5000 rupees.Amended by [Act No. 29 of 1990]; [Act No. 5 of 1999]7.-8.Fines and forfeituresFines and forfeitures, whether of the corpus delicti where it is the property of theprisoner, or of the things produced by the offence, or of those things which have beenused, or have been intended to be used for committing an offence, are punishmentscommon to crimes, misdemeanours and contraventions.9.-10.Repealed by [Act No. 31 of 1995]11.Penal servitude(1) (1) The punishment of penal servitude is imposed for life or for a minimum term of 3years.(2) (2) Where in any enactment the punishment of penal servitude is imposed without aterm being specified, the maximum term for which the punishment may beimposed is 40 years.(3) (2)Amended by [Act No. 1 of 1985]; [Act No. 36 of 2008]12.ImprisonmentWhere in any enactment the punishment of imprisonment is provided for an offencewithout a term being specified, the term for which imprisonment may be imposed mayexceed 10 days but shall not exceed 10 years.Amended by [Act No. 1 of 1985]; [Act No. 36 of 2008]13.RecidivismWhere any person (a)commits a crime within the 10 years following his conviction for a crime;
