SuryanarainRao. Jaimini is held in very great esteemthroughout India not onlyfor his philosophical aphorisms but for hisastrological writingsalso. JAIMINISUTRAS as presented in these pagesdeals with a system ofastrology that has no parallel in the existingmethods. The sutras arehard nuts to crack and Professor Rao has tried hisutmost to explainthe aphorisms as clearly and convincingly aspossible. I have notmeddled with either the translation or the NOTES asgiven by Prof. Raofor fear of affecting the sense. I have howeveradded my own remarksby way of annotations wherever I felt that anaphorism or aphorisms

required further elucidation. Professor Rao is theonly scholar inIndia to have attempted an English Translation ofJaimini. Thereforethe cultured public should feel grateful to him forhaving enabledthem to have access to a system of astrologicalliterature which isunique in its own way. My own publication STUDIESIN JAIMINI ASTROLOGYdeals with the Jaimini system in an exhaustivemanner with examples.The Translation herewith presented has beenthoroughly revised by meand it is hoped readers will be highly benefited bya careful study ofhis book.Bangalore B. RAMANPREFACEThe best Indian sciences, religion,philosophy, dramas,literature, politics and; epics are the productionsof the Maharishis.These are intellectual giants like the HimalayanMountains and allothers in the world are pigmies before them. Thewhy of this may notbe known to us, but the facts are there. Works,therefore, from thebrains of the Maharishis stand unrivalled and theyare colossal innature. Maharishi Jaimini is a great intellect andhis sutras are veryvaluable. I make no apology to introduce them tothe public in the

simplest, English garb. The sutras will and have tospeak forthemselves. They are more than five thousand yearsold and valuable tocommand attention and respect from all classes ofreaders, Indian orForeign. Those which have stood brilliantly for 5or 10 thousand yearswithout losing their brilliancy are realintellectual gems whicheverybody should covet to possess. These fivethousand years, insteadof diminishing their lustre, have added furtherbrilliancy to thesutras.The commentators have done invaluable serviceand all theirextensive interpretations and clear argumentscannot be incorporatedor embodied in short notes of mine. If they are tobe assimilated intothe real explanations of the sutras, the bulk ofthe present volumewould increase by ten-fold and cause tremendousdiscouragement to thestudents who would like to pursue the easiest way,and learn somethingof Jaimini sutras, which have been sealed lettersto the Englishknowing public. Even the great Sanskrit scholarsfind the sutras hardnuts to crack and often they give them up for wantof patience,devotion and technical difficulties in the way. Ihave been only astudent in Astrology and kindred sciences, althoughI have had 55years of study and practice. Astrology is a grandocean, containing

four ,. hundred thousand stanzas or verses, andrequires certainlycenturies for its grasp and comprehension.After all our brains can take in only a fewstanzas from theextensive literature, but for brilliant intellects,a knowledge of thefew fundamental principles will enable them tograsp the sciences andmake good progress in the course of a few years Ihave done my best inthis English Translation, and I leave the readersto judge of myhonest labours in propounding sutraic principles.Within my humbleknowledge none of our learned scholars seem to havetaken the trouble,or made attempts to translate these aphorisms ofMaharishi Jaimini andI am proud to say I am the first in the field oftranslation to haveundertaken this difficult task. Constructivecriticisms are alwayswelcome and I shall be grateful to them who offersuch observations.Destructive criticisms must be treated with supremecontempt. One whois not an adept in a subject will be a sorrycritic. He can be leftalone.B. SURYANARAIN RAOINTRODUCTIONAn Introduction to the valuable JAIMINISUTRASwill be an uncatted

for luxury. The profundity and brevity of thesesutras have calledforth the highest admiration from all readersduring the last fiftycenturies. My pen is too humble to do them justiceor bring theirmajesty before the public in that dignified form inwhich the originalsutras stand in Sanskrit. They eloquently speak fortheir intrinsicvalue. To frame short sutras with comprehensivemeanings is not givento ordinary mortals. Maharishis of Aryavartha alonehave framedsutias. None else could do them. No one has donethem in the world. Itrequires not only the command over the Sanskritlanguage but it alsorequires consummate scholarship in the Science ofAstrology andkindred subject to frame sutras. The readers shouldparticularlyremember that Jyothisha in Sanskrit means light andthe sense whichsees and feels the light. It is the clear vision ofthe Vedas. Of theVedic shadangas this is the most important. Withoutthe help ofJyotisha, Vedas would be blind.We want clear Light over all our events, past,present, and themost desirable future. What other sciences canpretend or havepretended to do this service for mankind ? Fromwhere and from whatprevious states of existence have we come ? Whatwill be our successand failures in the present state and where are wegoing to live after

the separation of Jeeva from the Oeha or the Lifefrom the physicalstructure ? What are our thoughts, deeds andaspirations in this life,and how far do we succeed in our aims and in whatmanner can we do so? Do the planets influence us and are we directedunder their command? If not, what have they to do with us ? How dothey exercise theirinfluences over us ? and how can we correctlycalculate them and guideour destinies in their light, averting evils andenhancing good. Whoare the most famous writers on Astrology, and whatare theirpretentions ? Are there any other sciences whichcan help us in thesedirections? All these and many more pertinent andrelevant questionsare asked, both by believers and non-believers ofthis science.Such questions are no doubt very important andare to the point.I am proud to say that almost all such relevant orirrelevantquestions on Astrology and remedies prescribed byAstrology andDharmasastras, have been clearly and convincinglyanswered by me in myintroduction to the Study of Astrology in the Lightof ModernSciences. The Introduction extends over 78 pages ofclosely printedmatter and I must refer my readers to that forfuller details andinformation. JAIMINISUTRAS have not been translatedinto English by

anybody in India, so far as my knowledge goes.Neither is it so veryeasy to translate sutras into proper English. Themeaning of a smallsutra, sometimes may be developed into stoutprinted volume: Englishlanguage is incapable of framing sutras and muchless for their beingtranslated into concise and short sentences. In itspresent form andconstruction the English language is quite unfitfor framing sutras.These sutras are profound, scholarly andunique in theircomposition and defy all competition. Theycomprehend a vast amount ofknowledge. in the shortest forms possible and havebeen framedgraciously by Maharishi Jaimini, for the benefit ofthe world. Heopenly says so. In the end of these sutras theauthor remarks that allthat he has written is quite true, as these truthshave beenpropounded by the still earlier Maharishis,Pitamaha or Brahma, Vyasa,Parasara, Vasishta, Garga, Bhrigu, Surya, Chandra,Brihaspathi, Sukra,Marichi, Palaha, Pulisa, Maya and other eminentscientists. Thetreatment of the different Bhavas, Rasis andPlanets will be found alittle confusing in the beginning but with somepatience, diligenceand practice the peculiarities of his systemreadily yield themselvesto our comprehension and enable us to read the fullhoroscopes in the

light in which Jaimini has explained them for ourbenefit. He givesvarious Lagnas, Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna, UpapadaLagna, VarnadaLagna and so forth. His Dasas are mostly founded onRasis andNavamsas.The calculations backwards and forwards forodd and even signstrouble the reader to some extent. The extent ofDasas differs fromthe ordinary conceptions as explained by thegeneral principles ofAstrology. Constellations have not been givenprominence. Brahma,Rudra and Maheswara Dasas are peculiar in thesesutras. While thelanguage is graceful, the interpretations aretaxing, difficult andstiff. A vast amount of general knowledge is neededfor the properinterpretations and comprehension of these sutras.It is asserted bysome that JAIMINISUTRAS extend over 8 Adhyayas. Ihave seen only fourand have not come across the rest. I am on the lookout for them andby chance I may have the good-luck to discover themin some old palaceor private libraries.* I shall translate the other two Adhyayas 'Prof. B. SuryanarainRao tried his utmost to secure that other twochapters but could not:succeed.However I have been able to secure the III andIV Adhyayas

information from which has been incorporated in mybook Studies inJaimini Astrology An English translation of the IIIand IV Adhyaya:has: been made by S. K. Kar. at an early date. Thetwo Adhyayas, Ihave now translated, are complete in themselves andwill be found tobe of the highest value to the students inastrology. The masterly wayin which the Maharishi has explained theAstrological principles, willsurely make the students masters in this line. Thesutras, being shortand sweet, can easily be committed to memory andthis is the greatestadvantage Sanskrit sutras possess over otherlanguages in the world. Ihave quoted the original sutras in thetransliteration system so thatthose who know Sanskrit may easily follow thesutras and mytranslation and NOTES, and correct any mistakes,which may have creptinto my translations either through ignorance oroversight.I have given the original Sanskrit words andhave explained themin easy English as I have understood them. Sanskritalone commandssutras. We have Brahmasutras or Uttara Mimamsa byVyasa, JaiminiSutras Or Poorva Mimamsa, Grihyasutras,Vyakaranasutras, and othersutras on various subjects by Maharishis. Suchwonderful display ofsutras is quite

Astrology and kindred subject to frame sutras. The readers should particularly remember that Jyothisha in Sanskrit means light and the sense which sees and feels the light. It is the clear vision of the Vedas. Of the Vedic shadangas this is the most important. Without the help of Jyotisha, Vedas would be blind.
