Saint Anne and Saint JoachimJuly 26Patron Saints of GrandparentsSaint Anne and Saint Joachim are the names traditionally attributed to the parents of theBlessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus. The feast day reminds the faithful that ourChristian mission is intergenerational and that the young or old we all have gifts and talentsthat we bring to the Body of Christ. Many parents think their child is perfect. Only two sets of parents were ever right. Mary andJoseph had a child through grace and raised that perfect God / son to adulthood. The parentsof Mary conceived their daughter in the normal human fashion but without the stain oforiginal sin. So, their daughter was superior to them from the start, yet it had nothing to dowith hubris. Today’s feast celebrates those humble parents of Mary known to long traditionas Saints Anne and Joachim, though they are unnamed in Scripture. The first mention ofAnne and Joachim in the Christian tradition is an apocryphal text from the second centurywhich was judged to be fraudulent by the earliest scripture scholars. The Muslim Quranrefers to Saint Anne in Arabic as Hannah, says that she conceived in her old age, expecting amale, but was given a daughter and named her Mary. We honor Saints Anne and Joachimbecause they reared the perfect child and were grandparents to the Son of God.A Grandparent’s PrayerSaint Anne, I am an anxious grandparent who worries andprays for my grandchildren. They are confronted with a lifefull of obstacles, dangers, and difficult issues. They are notalways aware of them. I beg you to take them under yourmaternal protection, because you took such good care of yourGrandson, Jesus.Together with your husband, Saint Joachim, you taught yourdaughter, Mary, to observe the Commandments and to loveGod and neighbor. Now I entrust my grandchildren to you.How delighted you were when your Grandson Jesus was born! Out of that same love forHim, please extend your protection to my grandchildren. Some are still young while othershave grown up and are facing life’s responsibilities. Bless them all. Help them discover theimportance of prayer, the beauty of Christian values and love of the Lord! Keep them fromdanger, harm, temptations, and all obstacles to their true happiness!Good Saint Anne, please keep all grandparents and grandchildren in your loving, motherlycare. Amen.

What is the thing that feeds you, thatmakes you feel whole, and that keeps you going? It can be manythings—the love of a spouse, the dignity of a satisfying job, theEucharist. Whatever it is, it is probably based on relationship. Wesay the Our Father many times in Catholic life, so much so that itbecomes a passing set of words, more meditative than active. Thisweek we have an opportunity to reflect on the true value of a petitionto the Lord. Every time we pray, “Give us each day our dailybread,” we are the man knocking on the door of his neighbour. Weare heard, even if we don’t always remember that we are asking. The Lord’s prayer is a prayer par excellence in the sense that it not only affirms ourultimate dependence on God but also insists that we as the people of God must be invested inour prayer. We must also remember that the answers to prayer do not always look like whatwe might expect. God answers prayer according to God’s will, not ours. May we be open toall possibilities of God’s answered prayer.July 31, 2022 – “Thus will it be for all who store up treasure forthemselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”Saint Augustine writes “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, OGod.” Nothing can satisfy us except for relationship with God. When wecome to realize that God is our greatest desire, the one whom we seekabove all else, we begin to notice the material things are not as important.Likewise, when we recognize that relationship with God is by sharing thegifts God has given us. We do not exist as isolated individuals. Life inGod fundamentally means life in community. As COVID-19 continues to circulate in our community, the Porcupine Health Unit would liketo remind our most vulnerable population, the elderly, that immunization against COVID-19and receiving all recommended booster doses are critical strategies they can use to fightagainst this deadly virus. Promotional postcards are available at the entrance ofthe church to stay up-to-date with COVID-19.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis is dedicating the2022 World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly to theimportance of inviting older people to contribute to building abetter world. The pope has chosen “They shall bear fruit even in old age”from the Book of Psalms (92:15) as the theme for the secondworld day, being celebrated July 24, 2022.The theme “intends to emphasize how grandparents and the elderly are a value and a giftboth for society and for ecclesial communities,” said a Feb. 15 communique from theDicastery for Laity, the Family and Life, which was promoting the world day.The same day, the pope tweeted that elderly “should be cared for like a treasure ofhumanity: they are our wisdom, our memory. It is crucial that grandchildren remain close totheir grandparents, who are like roots from which they draw the sap of human and spiritualvalues.”In its communique, the dicastery said this year’s theme “is also an invitation to reconsiderand value grandparents and the elderly who are too often kept on the margins of families, civil and ecclesial communities. Their experience of life and faith can contribute, in fact, tobuilding societies that are aware of their roots and capable of dreaming of a future based ongreater solidarity.”“The invitation to listen to the wisdom of the years is also particularly significant in thecontext of the synodal journey that the church has undertaken,” it added.Pope Francis established the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, celebrated eachyear on the fourth Sunday of July to coincide with the feast of Saints Anne and Joachim, toemphasize the pastoral care of the elderly as a priority. Not only are grandchildren andyoung people called upon to be present in the lives of older people, but older people andgrandparents also have a mission of evangelization, proclamation, and prayer, and ofencouraging young people in their faith, the dicastery has said.Grandparents Day PrayerLord God, almighty, bless our grandparentswith long life, happiness, and health. Maythey remain constant in your love and be livingsigns of your presence to their children andgrandchildren. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Grandparents, theheroes, are asnecessary to a child’sgrowth as vitamins!”“Grandparents are adelightful blend oflaughter, caringdeeds, wonderfulstories, and love!”“Grandparents holdour tiny hands forjust a little while, but our hearts, forever ”Offerings: It was discussed at Saint-Anne Parish’s last ParishFinance Council Meeting that our parishioners are dwindlingand that the collections (offerings) are also dwindling. It wasmentioned that in other parishes they take up a collection atfunerals.50% of the collection would go to Mass Intentions for that deceased personand the other 50% would go to the parish. After some discussion it was agreed totake up collections at funerals. If you have any questions, please see Father Luc oranyone on the Parish Finance Council.
