Greetings!Weekly Updates: Monday, May 7, the Adult Education and Literacy Department and the CNAdepartment launched an IET (Integrated Education Training) CNA course. Thecourse is unique in that itwas designed with 25additional hours for studentswho have a lower skill levelor are non-native Englishspeaking. As well ascompleting the 75-hour CNAcurriculum, these studentsspent time reviewing thecurriculum and vocabulary,as well as learning testingstrategies and employabilityskills. At the end of thecourse, all area nursinghomes have been invited toparticipate in a job fair forthese students to gainemployment. 33 students attended the informational meeting, and 23 studentswere able to enroll in the program. Sarah Breems-Diekevers, Julie Paulsen,Norma Azpeitia, Sonia Garcia, Beth Frankenstein, Cheryl Twedt, Karinne O’Ram,and Monse Figueroa are all involved in the launch of the program. Tracy Gorter and Mariah Oliver took a group of TRIO students to the WoodlandPark, CO, area to build a house for Habitat for Humanity May 12-18. Thestudents: Taylor Schettler, Scheliena Wu, Joannabie Konz, Norell Brown, KrystalAnderson, Julia Phathaem, Jaretsse Sedano, and Maria Vargas-Hernandezspent days working with students from Texas A&M University preparing a housefor paint. The students worked hard but still found time to have fun exploring theRocky Mountains. Students visited The Royal Gorge – one of the largestsuspension bridges ever built and completed in 1929 – and the Manitou Cliff

Dwellings – ancient homes of the Anasazi people. Students also walked wolves,visited The Garden of the Gods and attempted to save the world in an escaperoom. Through it all, students learned about the people and places in Coloradoand more about each other and their individual cultures. On Monday, May 21, four of our retirees (a total of 101 years) were recognized atthe Board of Trustees’ monthly meeting with a personalized Resolution ofAppreciation. (Please see attached Resolutions of Appreciation.pdf.) TheEngineering Design/Design Technology five-year program evaluation waspresented by Steve Waldstein. Action items included the resolutions ofappreciation, a Public Hearing to Amend the Published FY’18 Plant Fund Budgetdue to the refinancing of the LLRC this year, the FY’19 ICCOC tuition and feesrate (an increase of 7) and FY’19 NCC tuition rate (an increase of 7), and thesale, issuance, and continuing disclosure of 1,250,000 Industrial New JobsTraining Certificates. Interstates held a CTE Program Open House on Monday, May 21, in SiouxCenter. The link to a story on KTIVis: nal-students The Midwest Association for College Admission Counseling SpringConference was held in Dubuque on May 20-22. Lisa Story, Morgan Granstra,and Rachel Hesebeck attended the conference with colleagues from across theMidwest. The theme this year was “Just Keep Swimming.” As Admissionsprofessionals it is our goal to incorporate perseverance, humor, and positivethinking as we work with prospective students and families. Many of thesessions focused on “survival tools” for admissions professionals and “how tomeet the needs of all types of students.” This formula is one that guides us as aTeam, “Goals Hard Work Time Advancement.” Kristi Landis and Jan Snyder attended the IowaCommunity College Development Directors meetingon the DMACC West Campus on Wednesday, May 23.The group addressed a robust agenda on developmenttopics. Jan Snyder and colleague, Laurie Hendricks(Iowa Central Community College), were recognized ontheir upcoming retirement. (Please see attachedRetirement.jpg.) Alethea Stubbe attended the Iowa Association ofCommunity College Presidents’ annual summermeeting Wednesday through Friday, May 23-25, hostedby retiring president Mick Starcevich of KirkwoodCommunity College in Cedar Rapids. Dr. Lori Sundberg,

the new president of Kirkwood beginning July 31, was also in attendance. Themajor topic on Thursday was to review the legislative session and set goals forFY’19 to be submitted and approved by the Iowa Community College Associationof Trustees (Board members) at their July annual conference. Many otherimportant discussions on a variety of agenda items were covered. John Hartog welcomed participants and attendees to the “Going Global”workforce event held on the campus of NCC on Thursday, May 24. LesaStofferan did all the behind the scenes work of hosting the day-longevent. Speakers included the Lt. Governor Adam Gregg, the IEDA Director DebiDurham, as well as a variety of industry leaders. (Please see attachedAgenda.pdf.) On Thursday, May 24, 80 SibleyOcheyedan 4th graders did a fieldexperience at the Sibley PowerPlant. The students participated in 4stations learning about the world ofelectricity. NCC (Lisa Story) wasinvited to speak about our college asa training site for careers inelectricity. (Please see attachedpicture in 4th Graders.docx.) Kristin Kollbaum has been asked to serve a term as the National Council forMarketing & Public Relations (NCMPR) District 5 Assistant Director. NCMPR isthe only organization of its kind that exclusively represents marketing and publicrelations professionals at community and technical colleges. As one of thefastest-growing affiliates of the American Association of Community Colleges,NCMPR has more than 1,550 members from more than 650 colleges across theUnited States, Canada, and other countries. NCMPR District 5 is made up of thestates of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, SouthDakota, the Canadian province of Manitoba, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands. SGA is taking a group of students to watch the Sioux City Explorers game onTuesday, May 29. They are leaving campus at 5:15 p.m. from Student Services.The game starts at 7 p.m. Courtney Koch with CMBA (architectural firm) will be on campus Tuesday, May29, to resume facility planning discussions. Three internal employee focus groupmeetings (important but voluntary) will be held Thursday, June 7, to bring ideasinto the conversation and begin envisioning future facility needs.
