Both were started by The West Ohio Conference ofThe United Methodist Church as an extension ministry. 2019 wasa milestone year of celebration of our past as well as preparingfor our shared future.Over the past 50 years much has changed in central Ohioand that holds true for The Wesley Communities. The WesleyCommunities was originally incorporated as the MethodistRetirement Center for Central Ohio, and for several years, it didbusiness as Methodist Elder Care Services. Its current name,however, reflects its unifying role as a parent organization for ourseveral communities.Wesley Glen was the first community of its kind in central Ohio,providing continual care from independent living to nursing carefor residents. A second community was added in 1998 whenWesley Ridge Retirement Community was established. It servesas a continuing care retirement community for Fairfield andsouthwest Franklin counties. Services were expanded again withthe creation of Wesley Hospice in 2012. Wesley Woods at NewAlbany is the newest of our communities, established in 2017 asa Life Plan Community.Residents and clients of manyfaiths have been a part ofThe Wesley Communities overthe last 50 years, benefitingfrom its unifying mission: “Weare a welcoming communityof kindness and grace whereresidents and staff thrive.” Thismission describes our first 50years of service, and it is thedriving force of all our endeavors– today and into the future.

CEO’s Perspective – A Year in ReviewIn 2019, we celebrated our first 50 years of providing excellent housing, care, and servicesfor seniors. And we will continue that celebration in the years to come – 50 plus years ofexcellent service! We are proud of where we have been and where we are going.2019 was particularly memorable because of our beautiful 50th Anniversary Gala at TheColumbus Zoo. It was a magical night – beautiful weather, terrific food and entertainment,and those giraffes - close enough to feed! We could not have had a more perfectcelebration. 2019 has also been memorable due to the awards we have won – (CBUS TopPick 2019 for The Wesley Communities, Healthy Workplace Silver Award for The WesleyCommunities and Outstanding Large Business for Wesley Woods at New Albany). We areproud to receive these recognitions of our good work.I want to sincerely thank our residents, their families, and all our business partners andcommunity friends who have donated and contributed to our mission this year. We combine exceptionalcaregiving with familiar routines and comforting surroundings.Our highly trained staff provides support around the clock,giving our residents and their families peace of mind knowingtheir loved ones are in good hands.Wesley Ridge Continues WinningStreak in Surveys, Service, andUpgradesThe WesleyCommunities Hold10th Annual CharityGolf OutingThe Wesley Communities hosted its 10th AnnualCharity Golf Classic on September 9th, 2019 atthe Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City. This event issomething we as an organization look forward toeach year, and the 10th anniversary outing had atremendous turnout! Proceeds from the event helpedus reach our goal and will go towards benefiting TheWesley Communities’ Fund for Charitable Care.A special treat was the presence of the chefs fromour three campuses who each We truly appreciatethe time and generosity put forth that made thisevent so meaningful.In 2019, all three levels of care at Wesley Ridgereceived no deficiencies at the time of the annualOhio Department of Health surveys. This is the4th consecutive year of no citations for BishopPlace and English Garden and the second year forParkside and the Barnes Center.Wesley Ridge also received top honors fromHolleran for community choice in recognition ofexemplary culture of resident engagement.A record of seven employees hit their 20-yearservice milestone, bringing Wesley Ridge’s 20 Clubto ten members.The Bistro was completely renovated at WesleyRidge in 2019, adding a new grab & go options forstaff and residents.

50 & Fab Charity Gala Celebrates 50 Years of ServiceJune 7 brought the whole Wesley Communities together for a wonderful Vegas nightclub themed charitygala. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium served as an amazing backdrop for this star-studded evening,complete with Frank Sinatra and the whole Rat Pack (portrayed by very talented impersonators, of course!)Chris Godley, member of The Wesley Communities board oftrustees, acted as the MC for the evening, which included an upclose and personal interaction with giraffes, zebras, and severalother animals who wowed the audience before dinner.Our CEO Peg Carmany shared our important message of the workdone by our Fund for Charitable Care, which provides our residentswith piece of mind as they age. A special video sharing themessage of our Fund was debuted and well received.Frank and the Rat Pack capped off the evening’s celebration witha musical performance that will not be soon forgotten. MarilynMonroe was even happy to pose with several guests on the redcarpet.Wesley Woods at New Albany Receives2019 Delta Award for Outstanding Large BusinessAnnually, the New Albany Chamber of Commercehonors local businesses and leaders in thecommunity for their significant impact in drivinggrowth and excellence throughout the community.To be eligible for a Delta Award, the individualor organization must be setting an example ofexcellence and innovation with both their communityinvolvement and business methods. Nominationsare collected throughout the entire year and then arereviewed and selected by the Nomination Committee.Then, the nominations are voted on by the Board ofTrustees.“Each year, the Delta Awards recognize andhonor the exceptional people, organizations, andindustry leaders who achieve professional successand contribute substantially to the New Albanycommunity,” noted Chair-Elect, Ian Kalinosky. Theawards are given to those individuals who continueto strive toward the highest levels of accomplishmentwhile excelling in their chosen field and devoting timeand energy to their community in an impactful way.Wesley Woods at New Albany is honored to havebeen selected as the 2019 Delta Award recipient forOutstanding Large Business and we look forwardto continuing our excellent service and involvementwith the New Albany community.

Wesley Glen Health CenterResidents Impact OthersThrough Service ProjectsWesley Hospice Receives2019 Caregiver AwardOn November 13th, 2019, three of our Wesley Hospiceaides were recognized by Schoedinger Funeral Homefor outstanding achievement in the “Hospice CaregiverAward Group Nomination” due to their hard work anddedication to our patients. While this is the seventhyear that Schoedinger has celebrated caregiversby hosting their annual Caregiver Award ceremony,this is the first time in the history of the award thatit was given to a team rather than one individual, atrue testament to the passion and collaboration ouremployees put forth daily.“The best part of being a Hospice Caregiver isthe extra time and attention I get to spend withmy residents. Every day I get to do things regularcaregivers don’t have time to do. For example, I get tohave a girls’ day with a couple of my residents where Ipaint their nails and do their hair. Not a week goes bywhere they don’t remind me that it’s time to changetheir nail color or hair style. These special momentsbrighten my day and remind me why I love what I do,”said one of the award recipients, Bettina Straughter.We are so proud of our staff and feel fortunate to havethem as part of Wesley Hospice. Congratulations onreceiving this prestigious award!Wesley Hospice is part of The Wesley Communitiesand provides compassionate care to those in theirfinal stages of life. Our hospice team recognizes andappreciates everyone’s beliefs and traditions andoffers needed assistance and support. We develop anindividualized comprehensive care program designedto meet the physical, social, emotional and spiritualneeds of our patients. Wesley Hospice believes thatevery moment matters, and we strive to make the mostof each day. We go wherever you call home, be it anursing home, assisted living facility, residential care,group home or private home.In 2019, the residents of the Wesley Glen HealthCenter gathered every Saturday with familymembers and fellow residents to work on one offour service projects: stuffing neck pillows forWesley Hospice; making blankets or teddy bearsfor new foster children; signing birthday cardsfor inmates (signing only their first names); andcollecting box tops to benefit the School for theBlind, which is located near Wesley Glen.“The projects help my mom to have a purposefullife, helping others as others help her,” explainedSharon Jenkins. The projects also allow Sharonand her sister to spend quality time with theirmom, making a difference for others.“In the Health Center we believe that ourresident volunteers and their families are doingGod’s work every Saturday through their serviceprojects,” stated Brenda Vanpaepeghem, LifeEnrichment team member. “And don’t forget thatwe collected box tops for the School for the Blind.Those little tokens can be clipped off most boxesfrom grocery stores and turned into real savingsfor schools.”Box tops can be mailed to BrendaVanpaepeghem, Wesley Glen, 5155 North HighStreet, Columbus, Ohio 43214.

Wesley Ridge Awards Two Scholarships to Graduating SeniorsThe Marybelle Baker Scholarship celebrated itsinaugural year by honoring five 2019 graduatingseniors, who were a part of the dining servicesstaff at Wesley Ridge Retirement Community. The2019 recipients were Katie Cundiff (PickeringtonHS North), Michael Kelso (Pickerington HS North),Carly Mayzum (Pickerington HS Central), DylanSmith (Pickerington HS Central), and Jessica Quach(Reynoldsburg HS eSTEM).achievement, but also strong community involvement.Our family wishes them continued success in all oftheir future endeavors, wherever life takes them.”Wesley Ridge Retirement Community is a not-forprofit continuing care retirement community, servingFranklin and Fairfield Counties since 1998. It is awelcoming community of kindness and grace whereresidents and staff thrive.Each recipient received a 500 scholarship. Thescholarship was created by the family of MarybelleBaker, who was a resident at Wesley Ridge whenshe passed. Interacting with the dining staff was aregular source of joy for Marybelle. The scholarshipis a recognition of that special bond betweenresidents and staff. She began heremployment with the community as itsfirst Director of Resident Services. Shehad previously studied gerontology atMiami University and later earned herlicense as a registered nursing homeadministrator.Wesley Ridge PastorAppreciation LunchOctober is Pastor Appreciation Month, and each year, WesleyRidge Retirement Community shows appreciation to thepastors in our community for all that they do. The work inministry they do is a true inspiration and we are glad tohonor them.The October 2019 event had a wonderful turnout and theafternoon was spent with great conversation and a deliciousmeal. Thank you, pastors, from all of us at Wesley Ridge!

Wesley Woods Featured onGood Day MarketplaceWesley Woods at New Albany was featuredon Good Day Marketplace with host, ShawnIreland. Shawn, who is an anchor onWSYX ABC 6 and Fox 28, talked with thetremendous care providers in the MemoryCare unit.Wesley Glen OpensTime Capsule from 19702019 provided lots of opportunities to reminisce over thelast 50 years at Wesley Glen. One of significant importancewas opening and displaying the items from the Wesley Glentime capsule from 1970.As our community was brand new at that time, residents andstaff contributed a variety of items into the time capsule andput forth their thoughts on where Wesley Glen would be 50years from then and the changes it would go through. Thetime capsule was recently unveiled in a formal ceremony withresidents, families and staff, and there were many excitingitems inside. Included were the first marketing brochures, alist of the first residents who had secured their deposits andseveral newspaper articles with the opening of Wesley Glenas the headline story. One of Wesley Glen’s residents, Helen,led the opening ceremony and it was a fantastic afternoon forall who attended.The items were displayed in the lobby at Wesley Glenand were showcased at the Annual Christmas OpenHouse for all to view.Wesley Hospice Holds First AnnualDay of Remembrance“A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifullyremembered” was the theme for the first annual Day ofRemembrance. The event was held on May 19 in KimesChapel at Wesley Ridge. The day provided an opportunityfor family and friends to gather and memorialize theirloved ones who had passed in the previous year. The fourchaplains of The Wesley Communities, under the directionof Hospice Chaplain Bruce Benzing, conducted a meaningfulservice, which culminated with the release of a butterfly asthe name of each person memorialized was read. A specialcard was sent to those families who were not able to attend.Wesley Woods was proud to announcethat it had received its Medicare/Medicaidcertification for its skilled nursing areaand that its RCF bed capacity had beenexpanded from 48 to 188 beds.It was an amazing experience for Shawnto see the care our staff at Wesley Woodstakes in creating individualized and personalplans for memory care patients. Thankyou to Shawn and Good Day Marketplacefor spending the afternoon with us here atWesley Woods!

The Wesley Communities Receive2019 Silver Healthy Worksite AwardThe Healthy Business Council of Ohio (HBCO)will recognize 111 Ohio employers for healthyworksite practices during the 16th annualHealthy Worksite Awards presentation. Amongthe recipients being honored is The WesleyCommunities.The Healthy Worksite Award recognizes Ohioemployers who demonstrate a commitmentto employee wellness through comprehensiveworksite health promotion and wellnessprograms. Applicants are scored on theextent their wellness programs facilitateand encourage employee health, enhanceproductivity and ensure a healthy workenvironment.“We are all very lucky to work for a companythat values the health and wellness of itsemployees. This is our 5th year in a rowearning at least the Silver Healthy WorksiteAward due to our continued efforts eachyear to provide regular educational wellnessseminars, nutrition and fitness challenges,rewards for completing healthy activities,annual biometric screenings, and free gymmemberships for our residents,” said TheWesley Communities’ Wellness Coordinator,Spencer Fee.All applications were reviewed and evaluatedusing objective criteria. Three levels of highachievement were awarded in 2019 — Gold,Silver and Bronze. Other applicants, who meetbasic criteria, received a Recognition award.“This year’s application was morecomprehensive than past years as we workedto better align our assessment with the CDCWorksite Health Scorecard so worksitescould more effectively become competitivewith national trends in workplace wellbeingprogramming,” explained the HealthyWorksite Award Co-Chair Annie LaurieCadmus. “Worksites who are recognizedthis year should be especially proud of theiraccomplishments knowing they have providedtheir employees with nationally competitiveand well-rounded programming that supportshealthy lifestyles.”The online award application is available toall Ohio-based worksites from mid-Augustthrough late October each year. While the2019 application deadline has passed,Cadmus stressed that the HBCO would liketo encourage all worksites, large and small,public and private, for profit and nonprofit,to consider applying for the Healthy WorksiteAward in 2020.“Based on participant feedback, we’ll beproviding all of the Healthy Worksite Awardquestions in a fillable PDF in early 2020so worksites can work on enhancing theirprograms and preparing their applicationmaterialswell inadvance ofthe October31 deadlinesince nextyear’sscoring willbecomeeven morestringent,”Cadmusstated.The awards ceremony will be held at12:30 p.m. on January 23, 2020, at theNationwide Hotel and Conference Center inColumbus, Ohio as part of the Health ActionCouncil 2020 Annual Columbus Symposium.The symposium features national expertson health reform, health care systems andhealth benefits. The public is invited toregister for this event at the Health ActionCouncil website.

Wesley Ridge Adult Day Care continues tosupport Continuum of Care & Community NeedsIn 2019, Wesley Ridge’s Adult Day Care continued to successfully operate whileserving families in the Franklin, Fairfield and Licking counties. Co-housed inEnglish Garden’s Memory Care unit, its mission is to provide daytime care forseniors and adults with disabilities.Day care for seniors has allowed spouses/caregivers to continue to work whileknowing their loved ones are safe and receiving quality care. The program alsoallows respite opportunities for those who need time for themselves. Alongwith a safe environment, supervision and a variety of life enriching activities,the day care program offers medical case management by a registerednurse, education, support and resource linkage by a licensed social worker.Transportation services, bathing assistance and a hot, nutritious meal and snacks are also available.Day care clients receive the added advantage of having access to hair salon services, physician visits (suchas the podiatrist and a behavioral neurologist) as well as access to physical, occupational, and speechtherapy. Day care clients also have priority access to residential respite care from a couple of days to acouple of months or residential placement in any of our other levels of care.In 2019, the Adult Day Care program served a total of 45 different clients throughout the year with an averagecensus of 12.7 clients a day. Of the 45 clients, 17 were recipients of United Way funding for assistancewith daycare services - accounting for approximately 324 days. There was a total of 3093 service unitsprovided (to include the United Way funded days) and so the remainder were funded through the Veteran’sAdministration or private pay.
