Grossniklaus, MDExecutive Vice PresidentThe American Ophthalmological SocietyRE: AOS Nomination of Van Charles Lansingh, MD, PhDDear Dr. Grossniklaus:I am delighted to nominate Van Charles Lansingh, MD, PhD for membership in The AmericanOphthalmological Society (AOS). I have known Dr. Lansingh ever since our fortuitous meetingat the World Ophthalmology Congress in Barcelona, Spain in 2018. We immediately realizedour common interest in clinical teaching on a global basis and the opportunities for collaborationbetween our institutions. An international leader in ophthalmology, Dr. Lansingh currentlyserves as Acting General Director of the Instituto Mexicano de Oftalmologfa (IMO, MexicanInstitute of Ophthalmology, Queretaro, Mexico). Based upon my professional and personalrelationship with Dr. Lansingh since then, I believe that he would serve as an outstanding, highlyethical, and ideal candidate for membership in AOS.In addition to his professional roles as Chief Medical Officer to HelpMeSee (New York, NY)and Acting General Director of the IMO, Dr. Lansingh is a highly skilled cataract and anteriorsegment surgeon with a very robust international clinical practice. Currently, he is finishing arandomized controlled trial at IMO on the long-term outcomes and complications followingmanual small incision cataract surgery compared to phacoemulsification. He is also working on aprospective, longitudinal cohort study of the economic outcomes after cataract surgery at thehousehold level in Queretaro, which would be an appropriate topic to develop further in a thesisfor the AOS.Dr. Lansingh has had a robust academic career, currently serving as a Voluntary AssistantProfessor of Ophthalmology at the Miller School ofUniversity ofMiami, and previously as aVisiting Professor of the University of Manitoba (Canada) and the Director oflnternationalOutreach at the Hamilton Eye Institute of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Heis also Coordinator of the IMO Cochrane Associated Center, a Certified Reader of the IMOMAILOR Retina Reading Center, an International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) ExamsCoordinator in Queretaro, a Member of the IMO IRB COFEPRIS-approved center, and aNational Researcher Level 1 Member of CONACYT (National Council of Science andTechnology, Mexico). While at IMO, he established the first retina reading center (MAILOR) inLatin America and developed the first Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness study forCentral Mexico (published in Revista Mexicana de Oftalmologia in 2018).

Dr. Lansingh is frequently asked to lecture on ophthalmic epidemiology and cost data, appropriate models for public health ophthalmology (such as telemedicine and remote-basedlearning), and appropriate technology for public health ophthalmology (such as eye surgerysimulators) at international conferences and universities. He recently covered these topics at theUniversity of Manitoba and the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) Congressin Cancun, Mexico in 2019. Among his prolific publications, Dr. Lansingh has co-authored 13 8peer-reviewed journal articles, including the most recent reo update of the estimated globalnumber of ophthalmologists (British J oumal of Ophthalmology, 20 19), the 2015 Global Burdenof Disease vision loss dataset for Latin America (British Joumal of Ophthalmology, 20 18), theProspective Review of Early Cataract Outcomes and Grading (PRECOG) Study (JAMAOphthalmol, 2016), and the ICO Guidelines on Diabetic Eye Care (Ophthalmology, 2018).Dr. Lansingh's achievements in ophthalmology and prevention of blindness have been formallyrecognized by his international peers. In 2019, he was awarded both the American Academy ofOphthalmology (AAO) International Ophthalmologist Education Award (IOEA) and Associationfor Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Carl Kupfer Award, and he was inducted into theAcademia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI). In 2017, he was awarded the Pan-AmericanAssociation of Ophthalmology Benjamin Boyd Humanitarian Award, and in 2016, he wasawarded the AAO International Prevention of Blindness Award. In conclusion, I provide my highest possible recommendation without reservation in support ofDr. Lansingh's application for membership in AOS . As an internationally recognized clinician, educator, and scholar, he has superlative qualifications for society membership. In addition, Ifeel very privileged to have gotten to know him on a personal level, and I can attest that hewould be an outstanding addition to AOS.Sincerely,JLc James C. Box 016880, Miami, FL 33101- 6880April 8, 2020Second Nomination of Van Lansingh MD, PhD for membership AOSEsteemed Nominating Committee:I have known Dr. Lansingh for over 15 years. He currently serves as Voluntary Professor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Hiscontributions to world eye health have been monumental. His research in vision public health has assisted numerous organizations, and national eye societies to better distribute resources to manage vision problems. In addition, he has been a leader in many ofthese organizations, thereby directly affecting hundreds of vison care givers.A major area of his research has been in the area of needs analysis in countries and regions. Much of his work has been in SouthAmerica. In his capacity as the Regional Chairman for the Latin American region for the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness(IAPB), his leadership roles and expertise in epidemiological research was instrumental. The data from his work has been used inplanning and evaluating eye care programs. One critical outcome has been the development in Latin America of unified data fromall 19 countries with the aim of supporting Vision 2020 across the region. The outcome was also supporting non-governmentorganizations (NGO) to invest funds in eye care. Dr. Lansingh developed coordinated research programs which included populationbased surveys. As a result of this, he accepted the leadership of the IAPB Research Working Group. He has been involved inplanning and provision of eye care services that meet the requirement of sustainability. For example, he developed trachomaprograms, diabetic retinopathy and cataract surgical coverage and outcomes. He has several publications in these areas as well asin costs of services, the distribution of ophthalmologists and other eye and health care workers. In his current position at The Mexican Institute of Ophthalmology (IMO) and HelpMeSee have made significant changes in Mexicoand other Latin American countries. He has developed IMO as a primary education center for the Latin American. An example ofthe use and implementation of the findings from his research in diabetic retinopathy has been the creation of a Retina ReadingCentre at IMO. Dr. Lansingh has trained eye care staff and other health care workers in Mexico, Panama and Paraguay in readingand using retinal images. The Retinal Reading Centre has been designated as the official reading center for retinopathy ofprematurity in Mexico.Because of his outstanding contributions, Dr. Lansingh will bring additional prestige to the AOS and actively participate in ourmeetings.Sincerely,Eduardo Alfonso MDBascom Palmer Eye Institute Anne Bates Leach Eye Center 900 NW 17th Street Miami, FL 33136 P: 305-326-6000Evelyn F. & William L.
