7th Grade Music Music Chorus/Study ts who enroll in Band or Orchestra must have at least two years of experience and proficiency withtheir instrument. Students with no prior instrument experience may consult with the Band and Orchestrateachers to discuss opportunities for gaining experience outside of the school setting to develop the skillsnecessary skills to potentially join the instrumental music program in the future.

8th World LanguageElective CoursesWorld Languages: Spanish, French, Chinese SMS Students choose the World Language they will take for both 7th and 8th grade.At SMS, the level I high school course is taught over two years and provides the student with theopportunity to earn a high school credit while in middle school.Students take the same World Language both years while at SMS.IMPORTANT: Students who transfer to SMS as 8th graders areeligible to enroll in a World Language ONLY if they have record ofprevious course completion in the language at their previous school.

Placement Testing for New Students Grade 7 All new students will take the Math 7 and Reading/Writing Assessment.Students requesting Algebra I-7 will potentially take two placement tests.Grade 8 All new students will take the Math 8 and Reading/Writing Assessment.Students requesting Algebra I-8 will potentially take two placement tests.Students who have completed Algebra I in 7th grade as documented on school records will takethe Honors Geometry placement test to receive Solon’s recommendation for math placement.Students requesting Advanced Science 8 will take the Science Placement Test. (Studentsrequesting Science 8 will NOT take a science placement test.)Students will complete placement testing online using Edulastic.Counselors will notify parents of results when all placement testing is completed.
