INVITED GENERAL SESSION SPEAKERTerry StevensPharmD, DICVP, FSVHP, FACVPUTCVM PHARMACYKNOXVILLE, TNDr. Terry Stevens, a 1980 graduate of the UTCollege of Pharmacy, has been active with theAnderson County and Roane County Anti-DrugCoalitions and was recently appointed by Governor Bill Haslam toserve on Tennessee’s Commission on Pain and Addiction MedicineEducation. After many years in the pharmaceutical industry servinghumans, Dr. Stevens joined UTCVM in 2007. He has worked tirelesslyto improve services to the college and to make the pharmacyaccessible to veterinarians throughout the country. During his timeat the veterinary college, Dr. Stevens developed a highly competitiveveterinary pharmacy externship program that attracts clinical-yearpharmacy students throughout the US.INVITED GENERAL SESSION SPEAKERSarina ManifoldLCSWAUTHENTIC HEALING COUNSELING, PLLCFUQUAY-VARINA, NORTH CAROLINASarina is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker(LCSW) in TN and NC.Sarina previously worked at the University of Tennessee College ofVeterinary Medicine for 10 years as a clinical social worker for theUTCVM Veterinary Medical Center.She moved to NC with her family and now owns a private practicewhere she continues to provide Veterinary Social Work services.Specifically she offers grief counseling for the loss of an animal,counseling to animal care professionals to help manage compassionfatigue, and consultation to the community for animal-relatedissues. Sarina also conducts presentations on the following topics:animal-related grief & bereavement, supporting animal owners inemotional distress, compassion fatigue & self-care, and improvingcommunication within veterinary teams. In addition, Sarinacontinues to contribute to the University of Tennessee VeterinarySocial Work Certificate Program, and she has recently startedworking with the MentorVet program providing mental healthcoaching sessions to participants.

DISTINGUISHED COUGHLIN PROFESSORClaudia KirkDVM, PhD, DACVN, DACVIMUTCVM INTERNAL MEDICINE & NUTRITIONKNOXVILLE, TNDr. Kirk received her DVM from the Universityof California at Davis. She completed a smallanimal rotating internship at the Animal MedicalCenter in New York and an Internal Medical Residency in SmallAnimal Medicine and Fellowship/PhD in Nutrition at UC Davis.Dr. Kirk was a senior scientist for 9 years at Hill’s Science andTechnology Center and served as teaching faculty for the MarkMorris Institute. In 2003, she joined the faculty of the University ofTennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee asAssociate Professor of Medicine and Nutrition. During this time, sheestablished the Clinical Nutrition Service, which included a nutritionresidency program, graduate training, and expanded collaborativeresearch to include pet obesity and feline metabolic diseases.Dr. Kirk has served as Professor and Head of the Small AnimalClinical Sciences Department and Small Animal Clinical HospitalProgram and, more recently, as Associate Dean for Academic Affairsand Student Services. Currently, she is the Lindsay Young Professorof Medicine and Nutrition and oversees the development of the newWebb Center for Feline Health.Dr. Kirk is a Diplomate of the American College of VeterinaryNutrition and Diplomate of American College of Veterinary InternalMedicine. Her areas of research interest concern nutritionalinteraction with disease, with a special interests in obesity, felinediabetes, and feline lower urinary tract disease.

DISTINGUISHED COUGHLIN PROFESSORJonathan AbbottDVM, DACVIM (Cardiology)UTCVM CARDIOLOGYKNOXVILLE, TNDr. Jonathan Abbott received his DVM fromthe Ontario Veterinary College, University ofGuelph and trained in veterinary cardiologyat the University of Florida and at North Carolina State University.Dr. Abbott was board certified in the specialty of cardiology by theAmerican College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in 1993.Prior to his appointment at the University of Tennessee, where he iscurrently Associate Professor of Veterinary Cardiology, Dr. Abbottheld faculty positions at Virginia-Maryland College of VeterinaryMedicine, Virginia Tech and the Western College of VeterinaryMedicine, University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Abbott is a past presidentof the ACVIM Specialty of Cardiology and serves as member of theJournal of Cardiology Editorial Board.
