Giant TalesVolume 14, Issue 1Page 5Therapy DogsTherapy dogs are dogs whogo with their owners to volunteer in settings such asschools, hospitals, and nursing homes. From working with a childwho is learning to read tovisiting a senior in assistedliving, therapy dogs and theirowners work together as ateam to improve the lives ofother people.Therapy dogs are not servicedogs. Service dogs are dogswho are specially trained toperform specific tasks to helpa person who has a disability. An example of a service dogis a dog who guides an ownerwho is blind, or a dog whoassists someone who has aphysical disability. Servicedogs stay with their personand have special access privileges in public places such ason planes, restaurants, etc.Therapy dogs, the dogs whowill be earning the AKCTherapy Dog title, do nothave the same special accessas service dogs.It is unethical to attempt topass off a therapy dog as aservice dog for purposes suchas flying on a plane or beingadmitted to a restaurant.Pictures: Top left: “Zoya”, courtesy of Mary Dick.
