AnnualReportA Message from the President and ChairPrevent Blindness Texas fills needs within our Texas communities thatwould not otherwise be met. Families who struggle to keep food on thetable and children in school are many times faced with making choicesabout eye exams or lunches; glasses or shoes; vision care or dental care. These are hard choices for anyone and Prevent Blindness Texas seeks toease the impact of these difficulties through its free vision screeningprograms, free exams and glasses all across the big state of Texas. The past fiscal year was an exciting time for Prevent Blindness Texas. From the expansion of our Homeless Project to our participation in Eyeson Capitol Hill, this year was filled with new, exciting and innovativeprojects and partnerships. We want to thank Board Member, Dr. AmyCoburn for renewing our relationship with the Houston OphthalmologicalSociety. Also, we offer a huge thanks to Dr. James McCulley of UTSouthwestern College of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, for hissupport with the tremendously successful Dallas Eye Ball. Thanks toPersons of Vision: James A. Baker, III, Dr. Milton Boniuk, Vandy Anderson,Matt Bumstead, Jim Henry, Milton Lee, and Price’s Creameries forsupporting our fundraising efforts all across the state. Thanks to our wonderful donors who have for years agreed with us thatour work is relevant, important and necessary. AnnualReportA Client’s StoryHello to everyone there,Your help with theseI want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart! I canglasses truly, trulyhardly stop crying I am so happy! I picked up my newbeautiful glasses yesterday at TSO, and I’m still in shock. Ichanged my life.was in a hit‐and‐run car wreck a year and a half ago andshattered my glasses as well as myself and my car. By thetime I healed I had lost everything. Luckily, I had the pieces of my glasses and I was able to usesuperglue and something called j.b. weld to hold them together. Only I couldn’t read or hardly seethrough all the finger prints in the super glue. I hope I can finally find work and get a car again as now Ican see to fill in applications and read.Your help with these glasses, I know, truly changed my life. I had tried everything. Anyway, I justwanted to let all of you and your members know that I am truly, truly grateful for your kindness inproviding these glasses for me. May God bless all of you!“Partners in Prevention” is an agreement between area eye‐care professionals andPrevent Blindness Texas to provide no‐cost services to individuals who are not able toafford vision services. The “Partners” in the program are the eye care professionals whoagree to provide free eye exams, eyeglasses, or lenses to the program.Eyes on Capitol HillEyes on Capitol Hill is a special program forpeople with chronic eye conditions to speakout about the importance of vision healthcare and research, and to share theirpersonal stories with lawmakers inWashington, D.C.The program issponsored by Prevent Blindness America, with the generous support of Pfizer. The annual Eyes on Capitol Hill event provides vision advocates an opportunity to meet withCongressional leaders and policymakers who are often unaware of how much can be done for the manyAmericans who have, or are at risk for, vision loss. Half of all blindness is preventable, and increasedresources for research and prevention can improve the vision health of our population. Greater federalinvestment is needed to increase the impact of the National Eye Institute and Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention.3
