Letter from the Chairman and CEOAs Health Care Unfolds,Where Does AAPC Stand? There have been important health caretopics in the news recently. I’ll mention them briefly. Note, however, thiswas written during the second week of February and information and opinions maychange before Coding Edge is published.ICD-10 Delay?First, the American Medical Association(AMA) has petitioned the Centers forMedicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) andCongress to delay the implementation dateof ICD-10. This request caught many bysurprise. You may wonder if AAPC has a response. Since there has been no indicationor confirmation from CMS of a postponement of the ICD-10 implementation date,we have no response. AAPC will continue totrain and prepare our membership and other health care professionals for ICD-10 unless we hear a concrete response from CMSdelaying the date.ceived 526 votes with approximately twothirds against the proposal and one-thirdin favor of the idea. We also received over400 comments with those votes. Although526 votes from a membership of 112,000 isnot a lot and could indicate indifference tothe idea, we are taking the votes and comments very seriously. We will have an announcement regarding this idea prior toAAPC’s 20th National Conference in LasVegas (April 1-4). If we do move forwardwith this, the implementation date will bemoved to January 1, 2013.Come Together in VegasI hope to see you in Las Vegas. Registrationsare at our highest ever. This conference willhave the largest number of attendees, classroom sessions, and variety of topics, yet.Your friend,5010 Extension? In a separate, somewhat related request, theMedical Group Management Association(MGMA) has petitioned CMS for an additional time extension beyond March 30,2012 for implementing 5010 electronic filing standards. The requested extension toJune 30, 2012 is presumed to be an extension of filing penalties. Again, AAPC has noposition on this and will wait to hear fromCMS regarding this request.Reed E. PewChairman and CEOCPC-A Elimination? In January’s Coding Edge, AAPC outlineda new proposal to eliminate the CertifiedProfessional Coder—Apprentice (CPC-A )credential. We asked for your input on thisthroughout the month of January. We rewww.aapc.comMarch 20127

Letter from Member LeadershipRenew Your Love for CodingWith spring just around the corner, the soft green sprouts breakingthrough the still partially frozenground and dwindling snow patches in mygarden attest to nature’s impatience to refresh and renew itself. It’s called “Passing on the Gift.” To purchase a gift of livestock or tolearn more about how Heifer helps families move from poverty to prosperity, visit www.Heifer.org or call 1-800-422-0474.Artful Bras Support Breast CancerBy Shelli Martin, BA, CPC, CPC-H, CPMA, CEMC, CHAFor the past several years in October, the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center in Columbia, Mo. has sponsored a silent auction and reception in honor of breastcancer awareness month. AAPCCA Handbook CornerBy Donna Nugteren, CPC, CEMCGet Me to a Local Chapter Meeting, Now!Do you feel like you’re lost at sea, all by yourself, with no one out there for support? Here are some answers to questions from coders who are in the same boat:: I live in an area 100 miles from a chapter meeting. What optionsdo I have for meetings?A: Start your own chapter. Formation of a new local chapter is based on the needs of the AAPC members in that specific geographic area. Generally, the criteria for a new chapter is: 1) the nextclosest chapter is more than 50 miles or an hour’s drive away; 2) themembership of the closest chapter is 200 or more; or 3) there are 20or more interested members in the area. Chances are you are not theonly coder in the area who wants to be part of a chapter.Q: Who does all the work to get this new chapter organized? I already have a job.A: Each new chapter must have someone who is willing to takethe ball and run with it; someone must take charge. There must alsobe at least three other officers to help, so no one person is expected todo it all. AAPC’s Local Chapter Department is responsible for coordinating the research and will make a recommendation based ontheir assessment of the members’ needs in your specific geographicarea. All you need to do is find out if there are other people just likeyou who would like to see a chapter in your area.Remember: The chapter exists to support the membership, so theleadership should encourage the members to get involved.Q: Once we are approved for a chapter, what do we call it? I hadenough problems naming my children.A: Once formed, the local chapter is named after its city andstate. There is really no work for you to do regarding this.Contact a local chapter representative or the Local Chapter Department at AAPC today to see what possibilities are out there for youand other coders in your area.setarUECAffordableThe MAGA ZINE & ONLINEWITH YOUR MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION!ary 2012 Issue 7.1December - Januprofessional BONUS OFFERSubscribe before April 30th, 2012 and receive4 hours of ICD-10 online training FREEPutting Certified Coders InTheir PlaceICD-10 (CM/PCS): The Fear ofthe Unknown?877-700-3002 or online at www.billing-coding.com/subscribe/AAPCHow EMR affects Billing-Coding, Incfice and HIM EARN UP TO 12 CEUS PER YEAR INCLUDED FREERESOURCEfor Billing, Coding, Of !deetnaraug Q SUBSCRIBE & HAVEACCESS TO12CEUS INCLUDED WITH YO
