TheTrojans will face the Nittany Lions on Friday (Jan. 21) at 7:30 p.m. PT and the Buckeyes on Saturday(Jan. 22) at 5 p.m. PT in UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.Penn State is 4-0 on the season, sweeping both BYU and Grand Canyon twice each this year. This willbe the team’s first test on the road this season.Ohio State is 3-0 is also hitting the road for the first time in 2022. In 2021, he led USC in assists(678) and was second in digs (127) and third in aces (9). Hall led the MPSF in assist average (10.43) lastyear, and was seventh nationally. He currently is fourth nationally in assists (10.67, tops theMPSF).AVCA/OTBNR/NAT-12/NR12/10PRESENCE AT THE PIN Senior Brandon Browning, at 6-4, started the past 2 seasons at outside hitter. He had 173 kills (second onUSC) while hitting .266 in 2021, plus he had a team-best 13 aces along with 28 blocks and 74 digs. His .917hitting percentage versus Stanford tied the USC rally scoring era record. Looking to move into an open outside hitter spot is 6-3 UCLA graduate transfer Sam Kobrine, who can alsoplay opposite hitter and setter. He earned All-MPSF first team and All-American honorable mention acclaimin 2021 while starting all 21 of the Bruins’ matches at setter, getting team highs in assists (827) and digs(136). In his Bruin career (with 39 starts), he had 220 kills, 997 assists, 253 digs, 72 blocks and 33 aces. Hestarted on the outside as a 2019 sophomore. 6-8 redshirt sophomore Simon Gallas, who opted out of the 2021 season because of the pandemic andremained in his native Germany, returns for the Trojans. A member of Germany’s Youth National Team, hehad 4 starts in 2020 as a freshman.MANNING THE MIDDLE Two of the three players who manned a middle blocker spot last spring are back: 6-8 senior Liam Schroederand 6-6 junior Lucas Frassrand. Schroeder hit a team-best .511 in 5 starts last year with 25 kills and 7 blocks,while Frassrand had 33 blocks and 42 kills (hitting .321) with 8 starts in 2021 despite being slowed by injuries.OTHER RETURNEES 6-3 junior Adam Flood, who has 134 kills (hitting .254), 61 digs, 18 blocks and 13 aces in his career with 15starts (including 3 times in 2021, when he had 28 kills). In 2021, he saw action in 6 matches (with 3 starts).As a freshman in 2020, he was named to the MPSF All-Freshman team after hitting .279 with 106 kills and54 digs. Jameson McKibbin, a 6-3 redshirt junior setter who has 4 relatives who played volleyball at USC, did notplay in 2021. He has appeared in 37 matches at USC (6 starts) at setter and as a serving specialist and hasnotched 255 assists, 27 digs, 10 aces and 7 blocks. 6-3 junior libero George Dyer has 10 digs and 5 aces while appearing in 21 matches in his career, primarilyas a serving specialist. Gus Acord, a 6-2 redshirt sophomore libero, saw action at libero and as a serving specialist in 11 matchesas a redshirt freshman in 2021 tallying 5 digs. 6-1 sophomore outside hitter Jackson Reed, contributed most of his time as serving specialist anddefensive specialist in 14 matches in 2021, tallying he had 7 kills, 6 digs, 4 aces and 3 blocks. Kyle Paulson, a 6-8 sophomore setter and opposite, appeared in 17 matches off the bench as a freshmanin 2021, recording 4 assists, 2 kills, 2 digs and 2 blocks. Jack Deuchar, a 6-8 sophomore outside hitter, notched 6 kills and 3 blocks in his 2 match apperances in2021. 6-7 sophomore outside hitter Peter Brown played in one match in 2021 and tallied 1 kill and 1 dig. Christian Thomas, a 6-7 middle blocker, redshirted as a freshman in 2021, and looks to compete tocontribute this season.NEWCOMERSUSC’s new faces hope to make an immediate impression. 6-0 freshman libero Austin Stuard, who earned 2021 All-CIF Division 1 honors at Mira Costa High inManhattan Beach (Calif.). Stuard also was a member of the USA Boys National Training Teams the past 2seasons.*6-4 freshman outside hitter Noah Keelin out of San Clemente (Calif.) High, who spent the past 2 years withthe USA Boys National Training Teams.*6-9 opposite Luke Hobus of Palos Verdes High in Palos Verdes Estates (Calif.). His father, Ian, played volleyball and basketball at Harvardand then played pro beach volleyball; his sister, Heidi, played indoor (2015-18) and beach (2016-19, earningAll-American in 2016) volleyball at Pepperdine; his brother, Noah, is a senior libero and outside hitterat Pepperdine; his sister, Lily, is a sophomore setter at Pepperdine; his brother, Travis Waddell, playedvolleyball at UC Santa Cruz; his uncle, Aaron Dyer, played volleyball (1988-89, including on the 1988 NCAAchampions) and basketball at USC. Sam Kobrine’s brother, Kevin, is a junior opposite hitter/outside hitter at UCLA. Adam Flood’s brother, Tyler, is a sophomore middle blocker at NYU. Luke Hobus’ brother, Kyle, is a junior outside hitter at Cal State Northridge. Jameson McKibbin has 4 relatives with USC volleyball roots: his brother, Riley, was a setter (2008-11) andled USC to a pair of NCAA Championship appearances (placing second in 2009 and tied for third in 2011);another brother, Maddison, was an outside hitter (2010-12, 2014) on a pair of Trojan teams that playedin the NCAA Championships (runnerup in 2012 after tying for third in 2011); his uncle, Owen, lettered in1983-84-86-87, as the Trojans finished second at the NCAA Championships his final 2 seasons; and hisaunt, Claudia, was a letterwinner on the Women of Troy’s 1980 national championship team (Riley andMaddison currently play on the AVP beach volleyball tour, while Owen previously did). His mother, DianaMcInerny McKibbin, played volleyball at Hawaii (1978-79) and on the beach. His cousin, Blaze, was aquarterback at Fresno State (2019) who is now playing at Long Beach City College. Assistant coach Gary Sato is a member of the “First Family of Volleyball”: his son, Andrew, was a liberoat Long Beach State (2014-17), and his daughter, Katie, was a libero (2014-17) and on the beach team(2015-18) at Cal State Northridge, while his brother, Eric, won an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. menin 1988 and a bronze in 1992 (Gary was an assistant with those teams), his sister, Liane, won an Olympicbronze medal with the U.S. women in 1992 and also played on the 1988 Olympic team, his brothers, Scott(San Diego State) and Glenn (Loyola Marymount), both played college volleyball and Glenn also was anassistant coach at USC from 1990 to 1996 (the Trojans won the 1990 NCAA title), and his late mother,Elissa, was a longtime fixture at local volleyball matches as a scorekeeper (usually accompanied by hislate father, Richard).341NYGAARD Jeff Nygaard, a 3-time Olympian in indoor and beach volleyball and a 2-time collegiate MVP whileplaying on a pair of NCAA championship teams at UCLA, was named the head coach of the USC men’svolleyball team prior to the 2016 season, after serving the previous 5 seasons as a Trojan assistant. Nowentering his seventh season, his head coaching mark at USC is 57-91.12.67 His 2021 Trojans were 5-13 overall (5-12 MPSF), playing without the benefit of much of a fall season dueto COVID-19 protocols.231 USC was 5-14 overall (1-6 MPSF) in a 2020 campaign that saw the sport shut down nationally due to thecoronavirus (Troy’s last 6 regular season matches were cancelled). Nygaard’s fourth season, 2019, was his best as head coach. His Trojans more than doubled their wintotal from 2018 by going 18-11 overall (their most wins since 2015) and finishing third in the MPSF at 7-5(their highest league finish since 2012). Troy was the MPSF Tournament runnerup and, for the first timesince 2012, qualified for the NCAAs. USC, playing the nation’s toughest schedule, had 7 wins over teamsranked in the AVCA Top 10 at the time and won 11 of its last 15 matches. Its in-season No. 4 AVCA rankingwas the program’s highest since 2015 and its final No. 5 ranking was its best finish since 2012. Troy wasundefeated at home (12-0) for the first time since 2000 and was 5-2 on neutral courts. The team’s .320hitting percentage was its highest since 2011. USC snapped eventual NCAA champ Long Beach State’s23-match winning streak, Troy’s first win over a No. 1 team since 2013 (USC was 1 of just 2 teams to beatLBSU in 2019). The Trojans’ 3-0 win over BYU was its first sweep over the Cougars since 1991 and the backto-back wins over UCLA were the first consecutive victories over the Bruins since 2011. Jack Wyett andRyan Moss made All-MPSF first team (Wyett was All-American second team). His 2018 team (his third season at USC) went 8-20 overall and 3-9 for a sixth place tie in the MPSF. Butthe Trojans did post a pair of big late-season upsets, defeating No. 3 UCLA (the NCAA runnerup) andthen No. 5 Pepperdine (in a road MPSF Tournament quarterfinal match). Jack Wyett made All-Americanhonorable mention and All-MPSF first team, while Sam Lewis and Cole Paxson were on the MPSF AllFreshman team. In 2017, his second season at Troy, USC went 14-14 overall to double its win total from the previous yearand it advanced to the MPSF Tournament after a year’s hiatus. After dropping 7 of their first 9 matches,his 2017 Trojans finished strong by winning 8 of their last 10 contests. USC gave NCAA Tournamentparticipant Long Beach State 1 of its 4 losses of 2017 and Troy also beat 4 other Top 10 teams. LucasYoder made All-American second team and All-MPSF first team, while Andy Benesh was an All-Americanhonorable mention pick and All-MPSF second teamer in 2017.3

2022 USC MEN’S VOLLEYBALL Nygaard’s 2016 debut team went 7-19 overall, but did post 3 victoriesover Top 15-ranked teams. Nygaard, 48, coached USC’s middle blockers in his 5 seasons (2011-15)as Bill Ferguson’s lead assistant. During that span, Troy played in a pairof NCAA Final Fours, won 2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regularseason titles and posted an 88-48 (64.7%) overall mark. In the summerof 2015, Nygaard was the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Teamthat competed in the Pan American Cup in Reno. In 2019, Nygaard was honored by the World Olympians Association aspart of the group’s initiative awarding the letters OLY after an honoree’sname in recognition for an Olympian’s athletic achievements, as well astheir status in the global sports society, their commitment to furtheringthe Olympic ideals and their dedication to hard work and athleticendeavor.ASSISTANTS Former U.S. Men’s National Team assistant and Japan head coach GarySato returned for his seventh year as an assistant coach. Ex-club andhigh school coach Rory Prager joined the staff in 2020 as an assistant.Virginia Pham is USC’s second-year technical coordinator, joining theteam in 2021.ACADEMICS The USC men’s volleyball team excels in the classroom as well as onthe court. To wit: The team’s 2021 NCAA Graduation Success Rate of 100% set a programhigh and marked the sixth consecutive year that the team scored atleast 90%. The Graduation Success Rate measures how many studentathletes in the classes of 2011 through 2014 graduated within 6 yearsof their enrollment. The USC athletic department’s overall 2020 GSR of92% was an all-time high, the eighth straight year that it hit an all-timehigh. The team’s 2020 NCAA Academic Progress Rate was at 1000 for thefifth consecutive year. A team’s APR accounts for eligibility, retentionand graduation to generate a measure of academic performance ofeach student-athlete on scholarship. The APR is a multiyear rate basedon scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academicyears. The USC athletic department’s overall 2020 APR of 985 was theseventh year in a row that Troy hit an all-time high. The NCAA will delay release of the next APR data until the spring of2023 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Men’s volleyball was one of 6 USC teams that received a 2020 NCAAPublic Recognition Award for achieving an APR within the top 10 percentnationally in its sport. Fourteen Trojans have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 orabove: Brandon Browning (3.74, Business Administration), George Dyer(3.74, Business Administration), Liam Schroeder (3.64, Philosophy,Politics and Law), Cole Paxson, (3.51, Master’s in Entrepreneurship),Markus Olsson (3.50, Environmental Studies), Nate Tennant (3.39, RealEstate Development), Gus Acord (3.335, Communications), ChristianThomas (3.30, International Relations), Peter Brown (3.24, BusinessAdministration), Adam Flood (3.14, Real Estate Development), AustinStuard (3.13, Communications), Sam Kobrine (3.11, Master’s in SocialEntrepreneurship), Noah Keelin (3.00, undeclared) and Jackson Reed(3.00, undeclared).VOLLEYBALL SCHOOL In its history, the USC men’s volleyball program claims 4 NCAA titles(1977-80-88-90) among its 15 NCAA Final Four appearances, as well as 2USVBA titles (1949-50). It has produced 20 Olympians, 34 All-Americanfirst teamers and seven College Players of the Year. Besides the crownsthat USC’s men have won, the Women of Troy have captured 6 nationalvolleyball titles. USC’s women won the AIAW trophy in 1976, 1977 and1980, and the NCAA crown in 1981 before the 2002 and 2003 Womenof Troy squads captured NCAA titles (the 2010 and 2011 teams made itto the NCAA Final Four). Also, USC’s women’s beach volleyball programwon national titles in 2015 (AVCA), 2016 (first-ever NCAA beach crown)and 2017 (NCAA).4
