Dean Shawn Gibbs was appointed tothe National Academies of Sciences,Engineering, and Medicine Committee onRespiratory Protection for the Public andWorkers without Respiratory ProtectionPrograms at their Workplaces. Dr. Taehyun Roh received the 2020 HoustonMethodist Cancer Center Research InnovationAward for, “Exploration of Early-StageBiomarkers of Urothelial Cell. JayMaddock, PhD, FAAHB isleading a study on identifyingpsychological variables todevelop evidence-basedinterventions.Sharma ReceivesNational ScienceFoundation GrantVirender Sharma, PhD and hiscolleague at Georgia TechUniversity have been awardeda National Science Foundation(NSF) grant to study the multioxidant systems that involveperoxy acids (POAs) and metalsfor application in watertreatment.5

Why Do COVID-19Statistics VarySignificantly from Stateto State in Mexico?Guiding Efforts toImprove Physical ActivityResources Along theTexas-Mexico BorderGenny Carrillo, MD, ScD,associate professor in theDepartment of Environmentaland Occupational Healthalong with researchers fromMarista University in Mexico,investigated incidence,hospitalization and mortalityrelated to COVID-19 amongthe 32 states within Mexico.The results, which werepublished in the InternationalJournal of EnvironmentalResearch and Public Health,used data on both confirmedand suspected cases ofCOVID-19 in Mexico obtainedfrom the Mexico GeneralCouncil of Epidemiology.Luis Gomez and JosephSharkey, PhD along with facultyfrom Baylor University studiedphysical activity resources inlow-income and underservedrural communities in HidalgoCounty, TX. Their study, fundedby the United StatesDepartment of AgricultureNational Institute of Food andAgriculture and published inthe journal Health and Place,developed a new assessmenttool to better evaluate andprioritize physical activityresources in areas wherediabetes and obesity arerampant.8

Research Team UsesMultidisciplinaryApproach to HelpReduce Human ErrorWithin Petrochemical,Oil, Gas IndustriesS. Camille Peres, PhD, and ateam of multidisciplinaryresearchers are using aNational Science Foundationgrant to address issues incurrent petrochemical and oiland gas industry procedures.COVID-UDr. Fischer lead a clinicalinvestigation funded by theNational Institute of Health,studying the efficacy of theModerna COVID-19 vaccine inyoung adults and its effects onsubsequent infection, viralload, and transmission in theTexas A&M Universitycommunity.9

Center for CommunityHealth DevelopmentThe Center for Community Health Development(CCHD) was formed to establish a research,education, and experience base for improvingpopulation health status in a cost-effectivemanner. The Center also provides research,education, and training experience for master’sand doctoral students of the Texas A&M UniversitySchool of Public Health, the Texas A&M UniversityHealth Science Center, and The Texas A&MUniversity System.11

USA Center for Rural PublicHealth PreparednessThe USA Center for Rural Public Health Preparednessis designed to ensure public health professionals areready to respond to threats to the nation's publichealth. This Center at the Texas A&M UniversitySchool of Public Health is the only center with aspecific rural focus on supporting and developing theskills and competencies of emergency responders inrural areas of the United States.12

Southwest Rural HealthResearch CenterThe Southwest Rural Health Research Center(SRHRC), established in 2000, is one of only ninefederally-funded research centers by the HealthResources and Services Administration's FederalOffice of Rural Health Policy. The Center focuseson conducting policy-relevant research onmeeting the needs of special rural populations,minority populations and health disparities(including border populations), and rural systemsbuilding.13

Ergonomics CenterThe mission of the Texas A&M Ergonomics Centeris to help industry and healthcare partnersincrease their competitiveness by improvingworker performance, reducing workplace injuriesand illnesses, and designing unique products andapplications to combat the negative impacts ofaging and obesity.14

Center for PopulationHealth and AgingThe Center for Population Health and Aging(CPHA) promotes population health and successfulaging through innovations in research, education,and practice that examines social, behavioral,economic, environmental, and technologicalsolutions linking academic and real-world clinicaland community settings. Research focuses onevidence-based programs, health communities,and interactions between health, aging, andtechnology.2019 Recipients of the Redefining American HealthcareAward by the Healthcare Leadership Council15

Hisresearch focuses on statistical computing, Bayesiananalysis, HIV viral load modeling, survival analysismethods in cancer research, design and analysis ofPhase I/II clinical trials and translational studies, andstatistical methods in the development of personalizedmedicine19
