According to Molloy’sPresident, Dr. Drew Bogner, the college’senrollment has increased by 80% over the lastten years, and in an effort to meet the demandfor new teaching and learning spaces, the collegehas funded several new updates andconstruction initiatives. One of the most recently finished projects is theBarbara H. Hagan Center for Nursing, a newstate-of-the-art academic building set onMolloy’s Rockville Centre campus. This sustainably designed building providesconsolidated space for the school’s nursingdivision, along with additional classroom andmeeting areas. The new structure will includespecially designed nursing laboratories, aCLOCKAUDIO LTD. UKinfo@clockaudio.co.ukAlthough originally engineered and designed byothers, the specific technology needs for theproject needed to be better understood, addressed and integrated into the design tomaximize the audio visual aspects of the project. To spearhead this part of the project andequipment design and specifications, AdvanceSound Company, a 45 year old, Long Island basedAV Integration firm, was selected and added tothe core team for the build out.Intended to be a high tech facility, the audiovisual technology was considered an importantpart of the overall design and function for thecenter with a goal that it would enhance thelearning experience. Among the productsspecified as part of the A/V scope, and key to theNursing Center’s classrooms, were Clockaudiomicrophones.THE CHALLENGELearning happens when there is a clear ability forthe professor and students to communicate. Todo this, it is critical that within the classroom, thespeaker’s voice is clearly picked up and the audiois distributed evenly throughout the classroomCLOCKAUDIO NORTH AMERICA INC.info@clockaudio.comCLOCKAUDIO PTE LTD. To handle thesechallenges, Advance Sound Company specifiedClockaudio microphone technologies to work inconjunction with a Crestron control systeminterface.THE DESIGN SOLUTIONSIn the basement of the center, the classroomswere designed with tiered seating and desksurfaces to provide better visual access to theprofessor and to the various screens and othervisual aids within the space. The seating anddesks were permanently fixed and all of the desksurfaces included the installation and he C012E-RF is a through table cardioidboundary layer microphone with RF friendlytechnology that offers immunity from GSM(cellphones) and other sources of frequencyinterference. It is engineered in high qualitybrass, has a wide smooth response, cardioidpolar pattern, balanced output, simple throughdesk shock mounting, an inbuilt phantom powermodule and is low profile at surface level. At the base of the C012E-RF is a CH32 touchswitch, status indication ring that enables bothprofessors and students to instantly identifythose that are speaking. This touch sensitiveelectronic switch was designed to be used inconjunction with all Clockaudio through tableboundary layer microphones including theC012E-RF used in this project.Working in tandem with a Crestron DM Matrix asthe control system, both products work togetherseamlessly to add a layer of technology thatallows students to enter into and remain in a quewhile waiting their turn to ask questions orprovide commentary.C012E-RFCH32To ensure the participation of each student andto provide the appropriate sound coverage, every student seat has their own C012E-RF/CH32combo integrated directly into the desk surfacein front of their seat with the exact location ofCLOCKAUDIO LTD. Perhaps mostinteresting in the design is the interplay betweenthe various technology components. When astudent wishes to speak, he or she simplypresses the status button on the CH32 whichcues the audio processor to identify the speakeras “first in” and allows them to respond.Advance Sound CompanyThomas DePace, Engineering Manager“Clockaudio helped us meet our client’schallenge to accommodate an everchanging classroom.” Of Clockaudio,DePace says, “They are a company thatis driven to meet the needs of theintegrator and installation market andthey have always been very responsive.”Thomas DePace, Engineering Manager forAdvance Sound Company appreciates thecharacteristics of Clockaudio’s technologies. “Ina space like this, there is just so much acousticgain before you get feedback but by limiting thenumber of microphones on at one time, we wereable to improve the gain in the space. TheClockaudio microphones perform excellently.”Once they are finished speaking, the cue is givento the next microphone that has opted in andallows the next student to speak. When astudent is speaking the status light on the baseof the microphone is green to signal “on”. Thissame action also signals a reset on the camerawithin the room and depending upon where thesignal comes from, directs the camera to focuson the teacher, or the left or right side of theroom to capture the student speaking. Otherstatus indications include red to signal “on butwaiting.”CLOCKAUDIO LTD. Since theserooms have no set layout, it was important thatwe provided microphone technologies that weredynamic and moved with the space.C007 LLCLOCKAUDIO NORTH AMERICA INC.info@clockaudio.comHere again, Clockaudiohelped us meet ourclient’s challenge toaccommodate an everchanging classroom.” OfClockaudio, DePace says,CLOCKAUDIO PTE LTD.
