Academic CostumeTraditions of academic costume began in medieval Europe. When students inthe universities of Paris, Bologna, Oxford and Cambridge began to organize intoguilds, they developed distinctive costumes for bachelors (apprentices), masters(teachers) and doctors (teachers who had completed postgraduate study).American use has been standardized by an intercollegiate code, which takesthe Oxford costume as a starting point. The bachelor’s gown has long, pointedsleeves, and the master’s gown oblong sleeves, open at the wrist. Both areuntrimmed. The doctor’s gown has round, open sleeves, with three bars of velvetand velvet facing. The gown is normally black but some institutions have adoptedcolored gowns.The academic hood also found its beginnings in the unheated medieval classroomsof England. Its original purpose was as a head covering to provide warmth beforeit was replaced by the mortarboard. The hood is now worn around the neckand down the back and indicates both the degree held and the institution fromwhich it was granted. All hoods are black and lined in satin with the color(s) of theinstitution that conferred the wearer’s degree. The color of the velvet trimming onthe hood represents the field in which the degree was granted. 2022 Honorary Degree RecipientManuel “Memo” CavadaLike any exceptional photographer, Manuel“Memo” Cavada was unobtrusive evenwhen he was anywhere and everywheredocumenting the life and culture of SouthCounty. Cavada, who discovered hispassion for photography while a studentat Sacramento City College, photographedthe personal and professional lives of allthe “Who’s Who” from San Diego to theborder. As important for him, as well, wascreating special memories for the hundredsof Sweetwater High School students takingtheir senior portraits.“Everyone needs a good photo of their special moments,” Cavada would say.His daughter, Jennifer, lovingly remembers that Memo would use the time takingsenior portraits to also give students a lecture about going to college. Attendingcommunity college was transformative for Cavada, as it was there that one of hisprofessors introduced him to famous photographer Ansel Adams.Mentor Adams and protegé Cavada would sit quietly for hours waiting for wildlifeto drink from mountain streams. It was these early-career experiences that laidthe foundation for Cavada’s own artistic journey through Mexico.Cavada traveled throughout Mexico to capture the ordinary and extraordinaryon film, and later digitally. Photos of 300-year-old adobe churches stockedwith hand-carved santos, a Oaxacan woman with colorful jars of sweet drinksfor sale and children performing ballet folklórico filled his portfolio. His photosof the Monarch butterfly migration in Michoacán were later on display at theSouthwestern College library.Cavada’s legacy was on full display during his memorial service when he died inOctober 2020. In the height of COVID, an entire community gathered outdoors atLa Vista Memorial Park while a host of others watched the service on livestream.“I was taken aback by the impact he had on so many people and how manypeople loved him,” Jennifer said. “It was a reflection of how much he helpedother people.”For his meritorious contributionsto human relations, education,performing, visual and literaryarts, the Southwestern CollegeGoverning Board confers anhonorary degree upon Manuel“Memo” Cavada.4Southwestern College 2022 Commencement Ceremony
2022 Honorary Degree RecipientCarmen MartinezMore than 50 years ago, sevenimmigrant women in San Ysidrochangedtheircommunityforever. These women calledthemselves el Club de Madresand made it their mission tobring affordable and culturallyappropriate healthcare to thefamilies and children of SanYsidro, a community with zeroaccess to health services atthat time.In 1969, el Club de Madres opened the Casita at 223 Mesa Boulevard in SanYsidro. Approximately 40 patients were seen each day by three volunteer nursesand two physicians. Carmen Martinez, the 98-year-old last living member of elClub de Madres, sees the clinic as her greatest accomplishment in life.“Our whole community wanted a clinic for our families who lived here,” Martinezsaid. “We had nothing here in San Ysidro, no doctors, no healthcare. I feel sohappy and privileged that we now have so many facilities serving our community.”For her dedication, strength and courage to bring affordable healthcare to SanYsidro and the region, Carmen Martinez is being awarded Southwestern College’s2022 honorary degree—Southwestern College’s highest honor.Martinez herself has been a strong advocate for education, pushing her childrenand grandchildren to pursue their education. Having no formal education herself,Martinez said receiving an honorary degree from Southwestern College is atremendous milestone.“It’s better to have a diploma than a milliondollars,” she said. “It’s a privilege to studyand to be recognized with a diploma that youearn. No one can take that away from you.”Martinez was nominated by ArchitectureProfessor Diana Arredondo who called her aremarkable woman who was instrumental insaving many lives in San Diego.“Carmen is an exemplary woman who fought for her community’s access tohealthcare,” Arredondo said. “She encourages others to use the gifts, talents andabilities within them to make a difference in their communities.”Today, San Ysidro Health is a non-profit healthcare service provider with47 sites across San Diego and serves more than 108,000 patients.
