Dear Jordan High School Parents and Student-Athletes,Welcome to the Jordan High School Athletic Program. We are excited that you have chosen toparticipate in athletics at Jordan High School. We believe that education-based athletics is anextension of the academic classroom and offers the opportunity for young people to learn lifelessons while participating in sports.This handbook serves as a reference guide for both our parents and student-athletes. It coversthe policies and procedures of Jordan High School, DPS, NCHSAA, and the NCAA.Interscholastic athletics are voluntary in nature and students are not obligated to participate,thus, participation in education-based athletics is a privilege and not a right. Accompanying thisprivilege is the responsibility of both parent and student-athlete to adhere to the rules, policies,and procedures established for Jordan High School athletics. There must be a clearunderstanding that the privilege to participate in athletics may be revoked if the athlete orparent refuses to comply with the rules, policies, and procedures set by the Jordan athletics.The coaches of our athletic teams report to the athletic director and is primarily responsible forthe compliance of his/her team members to rules, regulations, and policies governing athleticsat Jordan High School.It is the role of the athletic department to create rules and policies that enhance, teach, anddevelop student-athletes to be productive citizens for their community and positive rolemodels for their school. This role can only be accomplished with the open lines ofcommunication between the athletic department, the parent, and the student-athlete. It is ourhope that this objective is accomplished through communication such as this publication, socialmedia, and face-to-face meetings.Thank you for taking the time to read the Jordan High School athletic handbook. It not onlyallows you to become familiar with policies and procedures, but it is our goal that it will serve toallow a smooth transition for you as a new member or continued member of the athleticprogram at Jordan High School.Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact your head coach or Jordan HighSchool athletic director, Rhonda Dreibelbis.3

The mission of the Athletic Department at Jordan High School is founded on our belief thateducation-based athletics is an extension of the classroom and thus provides student-athletesthe opportunity to learn character traits necessary for success both on and off the playing field.We understand that our whole school benefits from the strong sense of loyalty and communitygenerated through athletics. We strive to provide an environment that promotes achievement,excellence, integrity, fair play, honesty, and sportsmanship.1. To have an athletic program that is in complete compliance with the NCHSAA and DPSrules and regulations.2. To support the education of student-athletes so each one has the opportunity tograduate Jordan High School with options.3. To foster the development of life-enriching characteristics such as strong work ethic,responsibility for actions, leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, self-motivation, conflictresolution, commitment, integrity, perseverance, communication, time-management,and sportsmanship.1. To teach physical skills, strategies, and knowledge of the rules relevant to the sport.2. To condition student-athletes in a manner that properly and safely develops the physicalattributes required for athletic success.3. To nurture attitudes that enable student-athletes to compete fiercely with competitorswhile cooperating fully with teammates.4. To maintain the utmost respect for opponents, officials, fans, and the rules of the game.5. To develop a healthy self-confidence while using adversity and constructive criticism asan opportunity to improve oneself.4

In order for a student to participate on any athletic team at Jordan High School, he/she must beacademically, residentially, and medically eligible. These eligibilty standards are established bythe North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) and the Durham Public School(DPS) rules and policies.Academic Eligibility5 Initial Entry: A student may participate in athletics at a member school upon initialentry in the ninth grade provided they meet applicable NCHSAA and the local Board ofEducation eligibility requirements. Attendance: A student-athlete must have been in attendance for at least 85% of theprevious semester at an approved school (No more than 13.5 days of absence) Age: Must be under 19 years of age on or before August 31, 2020 (the student’s date ofbirth was on or before August 31, 2001) Scholastic Requirements: A student must have passed a minimum load of work duringthe preceding semester to be eligible at any time during the present semester. Astudent not academically eligible at the beginning of the semester is not eligible at anytime during the semester. ALL students must also meet the local promotion standardsset the Local Education Authority (LEA) and/or the local school Eight Semester Rule: NO student may be eligible to participate at the high school levelfor a period lasting longer than eight (8) consecutive semesters, beginning with thestudent’s first entry into the ninth (9) grade or an overaged seventh or eighth gradestudent’s participation on a high school team, whichever occurs first. Transfer Policy: A student transferring from one member school to another memberschool with the same LEA must sit out 365 days for athletic participation.

The Ticket to Play is a process used by Jordan High School to ensure that each student-athletehas completed an online registration and has turned in all the required paperwork by JordanHigh School, DPS, and the NCHSAA in order to be eligible to play. Please refer to this pagethroughout the year as your guide for making sure that all paperwork is complete and turned inat the proper time.Ticket to Play dates will be posted on the Jordan High School website under athleticsthroughout the school year. It is the athletes’ responsibility to make sure all the necessarypaperwork is complete and turned in order to be eligible to play.1. ALL student-athletes must be registered through an online portal (link on JHS websiteunder athletics)2. All forms must be submitted to the athletic director or assistant athletic director duringthe Ticket to Play issuing dates. Documents coming from coaches will not accepted andwill not grant the student-athlete a Ticket to Play.3. The following forms must be submitted with all signatures and dates:1. STUDENT-ATHLETES:A. PARTICIPATIONa. ALL student-athletes at Jordan High School are encouraged to participate inmulti- sports if they choose to do so. Per DPS policy, student-athletes arenot allowed to play one sport and practice with another while the firstsport is still in season. (i.e. a football player can’t practice with basketballteam if football team is still in season). IF a student-athlete quits a teamhe/she is not allowed to practice or play with another team until the sportsseason of the team that he/she quits has completed its season includingplayoffs.b. Student –athletes are required to be present at school on the day of anycontest order to play in the contest on that day.c. Student-athletes are responsible to be at school on time every day. Teamconsequences will be in effect per team rules and polices for athletes thatarrive late to school.B. RISK OF PARTICIPATIONAll student-athletes and parents must realize there is an inherent risk of seriousinjury when participating in interscholastic sports. Jordan High School athletic departmentwill use the following safeguards to make every effort to eliminate injury:1. Each head coach will conduct a mandatory parent/athlete meeting prior to thestart of the sports seasons to fully explain the athletic policies and caution, andwarn parents/athletes of the potential for injury when playing that particularsport.2. Promote, encourage, and maintain a continuing education program for coachesto learn the most-up-to-date techniques and skills taught in their respectivesports. All of Jordan coaches are strongly encouraged to receive their AIC orCIC certification through the NFHS.3. Instruct student-athletes on a daily basis of the rules of the game, propertechniques, and proper usage of equipment to ensure their safety.*** Per NCHSAA rules, a player shall not dress for a game or scrimmage when he or she is not eligible toparticipate in the game.8

INSURANCEDurham Public Schools provides catastrophic insurance coverage for all high schoolstudents and coaches participating as a team member in any interscholastic competitionsanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. This includespractices, game related activities and related travel. Coverage is provided for relatedmedical expenses in excess of 25,000 up to 1 million.EQUIPMENTUniforms - In several of our sports, athletes may be required to purchase all or part oftheir game uniform. Any piece of uniform the athletes is required to purchase becomestheir property.Equipment – All athletes are responsible for the proper care and security of equipmentissued to them. School supplied equipment must be worn for school-sanctionedpractices and contests. All equipment must be returned at the end of the sports seasonand should be in good condition. Any student–athletes who fails to turn in equipment orturns in damaged equipment (other than wear and tear from seasonal use) will besubject to financial penalty at replacement cost.9

LOCKER ROOMS The safety and security of our student-athletes is a priority within the culture of JordanHigh School athletics. This safety and security in the locker rooms is a priority for ourcoaching staff. Student-athletes are responsible for assisting the team in keeping thelocker room areas clean, safe, and secure. In the locker rooms, student-athletes will maintain personal boundaries and abstainfrom inappropriate actions that include but not limited to the following: fighting,horseplay, towel whipping, inappropriate physical contact, or throwingobjects/projectiles. Student–athletes will enter and exit the dressing room in a timely manner before andafter practices and games. Student-athletes are prohibited from the use of cellular phones, cameras, videorecordings or other devices to record or transfer images in the locker room at any time. Unless granted permission by the coach, there will be no music played in the dressingroom. All showers must be turned off No one is allowed in dressing rooms except coaches and players Student-athletes should report any missing items they may have to their coachesimmediately.LANGUAGEProfanity of any kind is prohibited by our student-athletes.10

REPORTING OF AN INJURYAlthough we would like for all of our student-athletes to play injury free for four years, weknow that injuries do occur. In the event that you, as a student-athlete, are injured whileparticipating in practice or a game you must let the trainer and coach know immediately. If theinjury requires medical attention by a doctor or treatment center, the trainer and the properpaperwork given to the parent of the injured athlete must complete an injury form.Once an athlete has been injured (muscular or skeleton) and/or suffered a concussion and istreated by a physician, the athlete must obtain the doctor’s and/or trainer’s permission toreturn to play.COMMUNICATIONIf the need arises that a parent/guardian has to take their child to the doctor for any reason,the Jordan High School athletic department request that the athletic trainer and the player’scoach be informed. By keeping lines of communication open, we can all work together to makesure that our student-athletes receive the best medical care and/or rehabilitation for a fullrecovery.11

COACHES’ RULESThe head coaches of each sport at Jordan High School are expected to establish, communicate, and upholdany rules and policies they set for their team. These rules and regulations must meet the approval of theathletic director and must promote a safe and positive culture within the athletic program.These rules and policies pertaining to a particular sport must be in writing and signed by both the studentathlete and the parent/guardian. These should be distributed and explained fully at the parent meetingthat will be held prior to the beginning of the season. Penalties for violation of team rules should also bein writing and signed by the student-athlete and the parent/guardian.Any monies collected to help offset the cost of maintaining a sports program such as expenses forequipment, travel, clothing, etc. shall be considered a donation to the sports program and will notreimbursed should a player quit the team or the season is abruptly ends due to reasons beyond theschools control.TEAM SELECTIONAt Jordan High School, we encourage coaches to keep as many student- athletes as they can withoutunbalancing the integrity of the sport. Factors such as time, space, facilities, equipment, and personalpreference will set limitations on the most effective team for any particular sport. (Exception – Golf and Swim)Athletes will remain with their team and under the supervision of the coach while attending awaycontests. Athletes must comply with all regular school bus rule and policies.12

COMMUNICATION WITH COACHESIt is the goal of the of Jordan High School athletic department to maintain open lines of communicationbetween coaches, players, and parents. We ask that any parental concerns be handled in the appropriatemanner. We follow the following guidelines and protocol for communication with coaches.1. We want our student-athletes to develop a relationship with their coaches that promoteshonesty, safety, and skills to effectively handle conflict resolution. If, and when there is aconcern, student-athletes are encouraged to speak to their coach directly.2. If the coach and the student-athlete are unable to resolve the issue together, then parentsmay contact the coach.3. If the discussion with the coach does not resolve the issue, parents and coaches maycontact the Athletic Director to discuss the situation further.THE FOLLOWNG ARE APPROPRIATE CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH COACH AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR: Treatment of your student-athlete Things you can do to help your child as a student-athlete get better Concerns you may have about a change in your child’s behavior Concerns you may have about your child’s academic performanceTHE FOLLOWING ARE CONCERNS THAT ARE NOT APPROPRIATE TO DICUSS WITH COACH AND ATHLETICDIRECTOR: Playing Time Play calling and game strategy Anything about other student-athletes24-HOUR RULEWe understand that emotions can run high when it comes to students participating in high schoolsports. It is our policy that parents do not approach coaches immediately before, during, or afterpractice or games. We encourage parents to take the time to reflect on the situation, as well ashow best to have honest, open, and respectful communication with the coach to ensure a moresuccessful experience for everyone.13

SPORTSMANSHIP AT JORDAN HIGH SCHOOLThe Jordan High School athletic program has high expectations of our coaches, players,cheerleaders, fans, and students when they are in attendance at high school sporting eventsthat involves Jordan High School.We want everyone to realize that you represent the school just as a member of the team doesand that everyone has the obligation to exhibit good sporting behavior towards coaches,officials, players, and other fans.Each of our student-athletes and parents/guardians of our student-athlete are required to signthe sportsmanship pledge and policy each year.INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR FROM PARENTS/FANS CAN MEAN BEING TRESPASSED FROMSPORTING EVENTS THAT JORDAN HIGH SCHOOL IS PARTICIPATING IN FOR BOTH HOME ANDAWAY CONTESTS.14

AWARDSThe varsity award is presented to an athlete who satisfies the participation requirements ofhis/her respective coach, complete all team obligations, and receives recommendation of thecoach.1st year: The athlete shall receive an award letter with gold metal inset signifying the sport anda certificate. (Should an athlete letter in another sport, he/she will not receive a second chenilleletter)2nd year: The athlete shall receive a gold medal insert and a certificate3rd year: The athlete shall receive a gold medal insert and a certificate4th year: The athlete shall receive a gold medal insert and a certificateJunior varsity players and managers will receive a participation certificateBANQUETSThe Jordan High School athletic department embraces opportunities to celebrate our studentathletes and the accomplishments they achieve on the field of play. It is our policy that at theend of each sport season, each tea will hold an End- of- the -Year Banquet to recognize andcelebrate both individual and team accomplishments. Although not mandated, it is highlyrecommended the meal be prepared by the Jordan High School Culinary team.15

A firm and fair policy of enforcement is necessary to uphold the regulations and high standards ofexcellence of the athletic department. The community, school administrators, and coaching staff feelstrongly that high standards of conduct and citizenship are essential in maintaining a sound program ofathletics. The safety and well-being of our student-athletes is our major priority and transcends anyother consideration.ALL athletes SHALL abide by the code of ethics that will earn them honor and respect that participationand competition in education-based athletic program affords. ANY conduct that results in dishonor tothe athlete, the team, or the school will not be tolerated. Acts of unacceptable conduct such as, but notlimited to theft, vandalism, disrespect, violations of the law, hazing, bullying, and cheating that cantarnish the reputation of everyone associated with the athletic program and will not be tolerated.Student-athletes of Jordan High School shall not possess, use, sell, or otherwise transmit, or be underthe influence of any drug (real or counterfeit) which is prohibited by law. This includes narcotics, vapes,hallucinogenic drugs, alcohol, amphetamines, steroids, marijuana, cocaine or other intoxicants of anykind. The use or possession of any tobacco products is strictly prohibited.***ANY STUDENT-ATHLETE GUILTY OF POSSESSION OF DRUGS WITH THE INTENT TO DISTRIBUTE ORSELLING DRUGS WILL BE BANNED FROM ATHLETIC PARTIIFCPATION AT JORDAN HIGH SCHOOL***This policy is subject to enforcement and/or disciplinary action by the athletic department andadministration during the students’ participation in athletics at the high school level.Notwithstanding the consequences for violation of the Athletic Code of Conduct that follows, theAthletic Director or other person designated by the principal may exclude the student-athlete from allathletic participation for a violation of which involves the selling or distributing of any quantity of illegaldrugs, counterfeit drugs, or controlled substances.Signature of Athlete DateSignature of Parent Date16

I will not sell, distribute, use, or possess any alcohol, tobacco, recreational or illegal drugsthroughout my athletic career at Jordan High School. I accept this agreement as morallybinding and will honor each item in this agreement. Playing and competing in education-based athletics for Jordan High School is a privilege and with thatprivilege comes responsibility. Student-athletes at Jordan are held in the highest regard and are seen asrole models in the community. As leaders, Jordan High School student-athletes have the responsibility toportray their team, school, district, and themselves in a positive manner at all times.Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, and other social media sites have increased inpopularity, and are used by the majority of student-athletes at Jordan.As a student-athlete, there must be an awareness that third parties including but not limited to media,faculty, Jordan athletic personnel, NCHSAA, NCAA, and future employers could easily access profiles andview personal information such as pictures, videos, comments, and posters. Inappropriate materialfound by third parties can negatively affect the perception of the student-athlete, the athleticdepartment, the district, and Jordan High School. Negative posts could also affect future scholarshipand employment opportunities.Examples of inappropriate and offensive behaviors concerning participation in online communitiesmay include depictions and/or presentation of the following: 18Photos, videos, comments, or posts portraying the acts of the personal use of alcohol, drugs,tobacco or posting the acts of being involved in drinking, smoking, drug use, vaping, sexualactivity, or posting others involved in sexual activity.Photos, video, and comments that are sexual in nature including websites of inappropriatematerial.Pictures, videos, comments, or posts that condone drug-related activity.Content online that is unsportsmanlike, derogatory, demeaning or threatening toward any otherindividual or entity (examples include are but not limited to: derogatory comments regardinganother school, taunting comments aimed at student-athletes, coaches, team, and derogatorycomments again race and /or gender.No posts should depict or encourage unacceptable violent or illegal activities such as hazing,bullying, sexual harassment/assault, gambling, discrimination, fighting, vandalism, academicdishonesty, underage drinking, or illegal drug use.Any content online that would constitute a violation of Jordan High School, DPS, or NCHSAArules and policiesInformation that is sensitive or personal in nature or is the proprietary to the Jordan athleticdepartment or the school that is not public information. This includes but is no limited totentative or future team schedules, student-athletes injuries, eligibility status, travel plans, teampolicies, team travel and itinerary information.

If a student-athlete’s profile and/or its contents are found to be inappropriate in accordance with theabove guidelines, the following will occur.Mandatory meeting with Head Coach, Athletic Director, and Parent or guardian*** Penalties shall be determined by the athletic department, including but not limited topossible suspension or removal from team.*** School administration will be informed as possible discipline from the school may beinvoked.Please keep the following recommendations in mind when using social media websites: Set security settings so that only your friends can view your profile/page Don’t accept friend request from people you do not know Never give out your email, home address, telephone number, or other personal information.If you are ever in doubt of the appropriateness of your online public material, consider whether itupholds and positively reflects your own values and ethics as well as those of Jordan High School andthe athletic department. The athletic department at Jordan High School supports our student-athletes in fulfilling theirdreams to play their respective sport at the next level. We encourage our coaches to makesure that college coaches know our student-athletes across the country.We look forward to the opportunity to recognize and honor those student-athletes and theirfamilies by having two (2) signing periods during the school year. We will host one in the falland one in the spring. The athletic department will determine the dates and families will benotified through communication from the players’ head coach, the JHS website, and socialmedia posts.** For football signing day, the athletic director will be given 30 day notice by the head footballcoach if any football player wishes to sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI) on that day.20
