YEARS IN REVIEWConnecting ExcelsiorAlumni WorldwideThe chatter among Excelsiorgraduates is growing in cyberspace. With more than 155,000alumni all over the world, socialmedia platforms are excellenttools for fostering a sense ofcommunity among graduates.Created by Edgardo Donovan,BSL ’04, the Excelsior CollegeAlumni Association Groupon LinkedIn boasts more than2,700 members. This open groupis a great way for graduates toconnect. And like the College’sAlumni Association Facebookpage, it can also encouragepersistence in enrolledstudents and help inanswering the questions of prospectivestudents. In fact, one of theCollege’s biggest social mediacheerleaders is former AlumniAdvisory Board member MarieWrinn, BRN ’10, who postscomments and photos fromevery alumni event she attends, including the annual Commencementcelebration.(population 46,551), which hasa rich cohort of Excelsior gradsthanks to an academic partnership with the local communitycollege, a traditional chapter isexactly what we have.It began in 2010, when Robert“Bob” Williams, BS ’95, formerpresident of the AlumniAdvisory Board, started gaugingthe interest of local grads heknew in the area through email, phone, and in-person outreach.A couple of years later, oneof the College’s first AlumniAmbassadors, Adrienne Mason,BS ’11, teamed up with Bob tohost a small alumni luncheon ata local café that was attended byalumni, students, faculty, andstaff. As Excelsior’s partnership with Broome CommunityCollege grew stronger, morestudents, alumni, and volunteersin the area were identified. MaryBeth Bobik-Kadylak, BS ’12and Heather Sanford, BS ’13enthusiastically called studentsand alumni to drum up excitement for a second successfulevent. And yes, plans for a thirdevent are in the works.Sharing the AlumniPerspectiveAs the Excelsior brand becomesmore recognizable, the value ofyour degree increases. Therefore,as the College moves forward inits strategic planning, the voiceof the alumni body is important. In 2013, the following alumniparticipated in the College’sStrategic Planning Forum byproviding feedback to the College on issues of importance toits graduates: Dwayn Hanford,BS ’05; Ken Desforges, BIX’10; Paul Troop, BA ’80; andWilliam Senn, BCI ’07.“Chapter” BuildersWith an alumni population astransient as Excelsior’s —30 percent of our graduates are affiliated with the military—buildinga traditional alumni chapter canbe challenging.
