Annunciation Catholic ChurchMay 23, 2021Pentecost SundayReflections from the Heart by Fr. Ivan“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire ofyour love.” The dictionary defines spirit as something that is vital and theprincipal animating force within a living thing. In terms of vitality, the spirit isneeded and is absolutely necessary because it performs an essential and vitalfunction in the living body. Without the spirit, a living thing is unable to functionon its own and would be rendered lifeless. Being "principal", means the spirit isthe main, primary and most important element in a living body. It leads andanimates a living body giving it lifelike qualities to live, move, breathe. The sameis true of the Holy Spirit. He is the vital and essential force in our body. Hebreathes life into us; moves, instructs and guides us. He helps us to live forever. However, unlike any spirit, the Holy Spirit is a person, a real person, the thirdperson of the Holy and Blessed Trinity. Although the Holy Spirit is unable to beseen by the human eye, He can be seen, heard and experienced through theeyes and ears of our heart. He can also be seen, heard and experienced through a rock solid faith andunshakable belief in God, through a loving obedience and peaceful surrender to the Father’s will, through silentprayer and confident trust in Christ and through a genuine openness and total abandonment to the HolySpirit’s guidance and inspiration. The Holy Spirit is a gift from God. The promised gift that teaches and instructus in the Way of Christ and reminds us all what he taught and told his disciples. We are reminded that in God’sinfinite love and mercy towards his special creation, he came down from heaven to lead his children back tohim but they rejected his loving invitation. In the Father’s infinite love and mercy, he sent his Son Jesus toshow the world the extent of God’s love for us. Just look at the Cross. Although this time, God’s invitation wasrejected by some, it was lovingly accepted by many. After Jesus returned to Heaven, he sent the Holy Spirit tosanctify and consecrate our hearts in Truth. God really loves us and desires to be with us always. If we want tobe with God, we must cooperate with his Spirit and allow him to empty us, heal us, renew us, restore us, fill usand inflame us with the fire of his Holy Love. “Come, Holy Spirit, come!”OUR YEAR LONG DEVOTION TO THE EUCHARIST STARTSON JUNE 6TH - CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAYWE WILL HAVE EUCHARISTIC ADORATION BEGINNINGAFTER THE 12NOON MASS.AT 2:30 WE WILL RECITE THE ROSARY.FROM 3-4PM WE WILL HAVE A HOLY HOUR WITHMUSICAL REFLECTION.JOIN US IN DEVOTION TO THE MOST HOLY EUCHARIST.View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com

Annunciation Catholic ChurchPillars of Faithby Fr. SteveBaumannMay 23, 2021Pentecost SundaySt. Bernardine of Siena, Priest – May 20th"The name of Jesus is the glory of preachers because the shining splendor of that namecauses his word to be proclaimed and heard." (Sermon 40, "The Glorious Name of JesusChrist"). As a preacher, St. Bernardine (1380-1444) is best known for his devotion to the holyname of Jesus. For him the name Jesus spans the whole history of salvation, and so there is inhis name a spirituality of human and personal history. This particular devotion emphasizes thehumanity of Jesus, which is found in other Franciscan scholars as well, especially St.Bonaventure.In his time, St. Bernardine of Siena greatly influenced the popular piety of the people. Their devotions were learnedlargely from homilists like Bernardine. Hearing sermons was a large part of their devotional life which included thesaying of prayers, fasting, almsgiving, penitential practices and the making of pilgrimages. The sermons of itinerantmendicant (traveling and begging) preachers challenged their listeners to a more disciplined way of life.St. Bernardine was the most influential preacher in the first half of the fifteenth century. He had entered theFranciscans at the age of 22, after spending several years caring for the sick during the plague. He became a priesttwo years later and spent the next twelve years living a contemplative life in solitude and in prayer. He began hisministry of preaching about 1415, travelling throughout Italy. His preaching was interrupted in 1430 when he waselected the General Superior of the Friars of the Strict Observance, an office he held for twelve years. During thattime he did much to enhance the spiritual and intellectual life of the membership of his order which grew from 300 toover 4,000.In the final years of his life, he returned to preaching, but already ill and in failing health, he died on the way to Naplesin 1444, at the age 64. Six years later, in record time, he was canonized.St. Bernardine's special love for the holy name of Jesus is evident in these words from one of his sermons: "Jesus, Oglorious name, O gracious name, O lovely and worthy name. Through you sins are wiped away, adversaries areovercome, the sick are cured, and those suffering trials are strengthened and consoled."In his own life, he experienced that strength and consolation. During his preaching ministry, he endured harassmentand accusations, arrest by papal order, and was forbidden, for a short time, to preach. However, he suffered andprayed in solitude, and when vindicated he preached with renewed intensity. He frequently was able to reach eventhe most hardened and endangered souls. In his sermon on the Holy Name of Jesus, St. Bernardine said that the name of Jesus "must be proclaimed, that it mayshine out and never be suppressed. But it must not be preached by someone with sullied mind or unclean lips, butstored up and poured out from a chosen vessel." St. Bernardine was just such a chosen vessel. Our Online Food Drive is open 24/7 atwww.annunciationorlando.org/food-driveYour generosity is feeding hundreds oflocal families each month in our schoolbackpack program and in our Food Drops.Thank you!The Servants of the PiercedHearts of Jesus and MaryInvite you to celebrateThe Great Vigilon the Solemnity of theSacred Heart and the Feastof the Immaculate Heart.Friday, June 11 – 7 to 12midnightHoly Mass for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. We will be in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament untilmidnight, accompanying the Lord with prayers, intercession, and particular meditations each hour.On Saturday, June 12 we will attend the 8am Mass inhonor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com
