WHY WE DID ITAUTISM SERVICESTo help MEET the tremendous need for therapy services for individualsdiagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities.“We are most thankful for all your hardwork with our child. Hearing him speak isa parent’s dream come true. We know it’sa long path but we have hope that he willbe just fine. Thank you for all you do.”— Sara and Bob Jones*“Our recent trip to Disneyland was night and dayfrom our last one. Last year we had to get a specialpass because our son would not stand still in line andwould scream and run away. As a result of his autismtherapy services with Easter Seals, this year he waitedpatiently in line, followed directions and was observing everyone, especially the kids we went with. I wasso excited that I took video and sent it to my mother. She too was amazed.”— June Smith** Names have been changed.4

I waslooking at fast food jobs but WorkFirst emphasizedfinding work that I could make a career out of.”Matthew has a full-time job with benefits doingfood prep for the cafeteria’s juice bar. Once hired,Matthew was assigned a job coach who helpedhim master his duties. Plus, Matthew is completinga community college certificate in recreationalleadership and working on another in hospitality.Matthew’s parents Cliff and Varnessa say, “EasterSeals WorkFirst changed our son Matthew froma ‘consumer’ to a ‘producer’. This will give him amore positive future. We are eternally gratefulfor the work WorkFirst did for Matthew.”Today Suzanne is drug-free, independent andgainfully employed. “Everyone should have theopportunity I’ve had.”5

WHY WE DID ITLIVING OPTIONS n ADULT DAY SERVICESTo SUPPORT people with disabilities to live and thrive in localcommunities—not in institutions.Paul Maldonado lived almost his entire life in aninstitution. For 40 years, starting when he was 7,Paul lived at a state-run developmental center. Two years ago he transitioned to living in a localSouthern California community. He now lives in a4-bedroom, 2-bath home with three housemates andfull support from Easter Seals Living Options staff.“From his first visit to this house, Paul wanted tostay,” says Residential Administrator Sola Fadipe. These days Paul lives a full life that includes a jobproviding help at an office, chatting regularly withhis neighbors and social activities. “His life is notso restrictive anymore,” Fadipe says.Salina Weaver was ateenager when a car accident left her with aTraumatic Brain Injury at age 17. After three monthsin a coma, Salina lived at home for the next sixyears with her mother as primary caregiver. In the past two years Salina’s life has changedtremendously as a result of her participation withEaster Seals Adult Day Services. With support fromher Life Skills Coach, Salina does regular volunteerwork in the local community, socializes with herpeers and has set goals that include walking again, having her own home, and maintaining paid work.“Easter Seals has made a big difference in my life.I love volunteering and working each day towardmeeting my goals,” she says.6

CHILDREN’S SERVICESTo BUILD a better future for children—and our country—by providing earlyeducation and family support services.Lindsey Friend started with Easter Seals Children’s ServicesHome Base Program as a teen mom to get help working withher daughter who was having some behavior problems. While in the program Lindsey and her three young childrenwere forced to flee to escape domestic violence. “I washomeless and had no money, family or friends for support,”she says. “I’m grateful that my Easter Seals Home Baseteacher gave me resources for shelter and counseling forme and my kids.” The Home Base Program teacher alsoreferred Lindsey to job and other community resources.Lindsey followed through. She got a job (and a promotion),an apartment and child care for her girls.“Home Base is a great program and I consider the teachera friend. She’s always been there. I can always pick up thephone. This was a great opportunity and Easter Seals wasmy backbone.”7Sandy Pena says the Easter Seals ChildDevelopment Center (CDC) has mademany things possible for her and hertwo children, Scarlett and Nicolas. “I ama single mom. If it wasn’t for the CDCI wouldn’t have a job and be able tosupport my kids.”Sandy’s kids have received Early HeadStart and Head Start services as well aschild care at the CDC. “My daughterstarted at the CDC when she was two.She is very social, has learned her ABCsand more. My son’s development wasnot up with the other kids his age. He hasautism. The CDC guided me through theprocess of getting him the therapy andservices he needs.”As a result Sandy says her children willbe ready for school—and life beyond.“Everybody at the CDC from beginningto end has been amazing and patientand loving.”
