COACHING STAFFMIKE MAYNARDDirector of Track & Field6th SeasonAzusa Pacific ‘86Mike Maynard enters his third season as the UCLA Director of Track and field overseeing the men’s and women’sprograms following three seasons as men’s head coachas well as the throws coach for both the men’s andwomen’s squads. Prior to coming to UCLA, Maynard washead coach/throws coach at Boise State for nine years.In his second season at the helm of both programs theBruins made large strides on the national stage. Themen’s track and field program was headlined in 2014by a dual meet win over rival USC and some impressiveindividual performances. Five Bruins earned USTFCCCAAll-American honors. At the Pac-12 Championshipssophomore Nicholas Scarvelis won the shot put titlewith a throw of 63-10.25, to win the event by overthree feet. Senior Julian Wruck defended his Pac-12discus title with a mark of 210-9. En route to earningAll-American accolades, Wruck placed second at theNCAA meet in the discus, Scarvelis finished 10th in theshot put, Matthew Kosecki was 12th in the discus, CodyDanielson was 14th in the javelin and Nick Hartle was16th in the 800m. During the indoor season, Marcus Nilsson and Mike Woepse earned USTFCCCA All-Americanhonors after Nilsson placed eighth in the heptathlon andWoepse was 13th in the pole vault.The UCLA’s women’s program showcased six studentathletes that were named USTFCCCA All-Americans.Leading the way for the Bruins at the NCAA Championships was junior Kylie Price in the long jump, who placedthird to earn her third straight All-America honor. SeniorNatasha Kolbo capped off her Bruin career with a13th place finish in the pole vault. Junior Zibby Boyermade her first NCAA meet appearance and earnedAll-America accolades by placing 17th in the high jump.Junior Alexis Walker was named an All-American in justher first season competing in the heptathlon. A pair ofUCLA hurdlers also garnered All-American honors asBrea Buchanan and Trinity Wilson made the finals in the100m hurdles at the NCAA meet. During the indoor campaign, a trio of Bruins earned USTFCCCA All-Americanhonors. Ida storm was runner-up in the weight throw whileKelsey Smith placed 16th in the 3,000m and Kylie Pricewas 14th in the long jump.4on to place 12th at the NCAA Outdoor Championshipsand the women placed in the top 25 with a 20th placefinish, At the 2013 Indoor Championships, the womenwere 15th while the men placed 49th.pionships by Gabe Wallin in the men’s javelin, over 50new school record performances and 30 All-Americanaccolades. The Broncos enjoyed unprecedented successbehind Maynard’s direction.Individually, Julian Wruck posted one of the finestseasons in collegiate track, culminating in a NCAA titleand an appearance at The Bowerman Trophy presentation, where he was one of three male finalists for theprestigious award. Wruck set the collegiate record inthe discus and boasted the top 27 throws of any collegian in 2013.During the 2009 season, the men’s team won the WACIndoor Championship, finished 27th at the NCAA IndoorChampionships and 25th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The women’s team placed 19th at the NCAAIndoor Championships.At the NCAA Indoor Championships UCLA had fourAll-Americans. Mike Woepse (7th in pole vault), KyliePrice (4th in long jump), Brea Buchanan (5th in 60 mH)and Allison Koressel (5ht in pole vault). At the outdoorchampionships, nine earned All-American honors. Wruck(1st in discus), Marcus Nilsson (3rd in decathlon), AlecFaldermeyer (7th in high jump), Dominic Giovannoni(13th in decathlon), Turquoise Thompson (3rd in 400mH),Ida Storm (5ht in hammer), Kylie Price (6th in longjump/100m) and Brea Buchanan earned honorablemention All-American accolades. Woepse and Wruckalso won Pac-12 titles in their respective events.In 2012 the men continued to excel. At the Pac-12Championships, the Bruin men finished fourth overall with86 points as Alec Faldermeyer and redshirt MatthewKosecki captured conference titles in their respectiveevents. The men’s team finished 17th overall at theNCAA Championships, led by impressive performancesfrom three sophomores - Mike Woepse(2nd in polevault), Alec Faldermeyer (3rd in hammer); and MarcusNilsson(6th in decathlon), which earned all three firstteam All-America honors. The 4x100m relay of JamalAlston, Maxwell Dyce, R.J. Frasier and Laijon Whiteearned second-team All-America honors (16th) alongwith discus thrower Matthew Kosecki (10th). Derek Eager(javelin) and Dyce (200m) earned honorable mentionAll-America honors in their respective events.In the NCAA indoor Championships, the Bruins wererepresented by sophomores Alec Faldermeyer, MikeWoepse and Marcus Nilsson and freshman Dustin Fay. Inthe pole vault, Woepse finished 14th overall and earnedsecond-team USTFCCCA All-American honors. In the5000m, Fay did not race due to an injury. Faldermeyerplaced fifth in the 35-lb weight throw and picked up thethird first-team All-American honor of his career. Nilssonfinished eleventh in the heptathlon and earned the firstAll-American (2nd team) of his career.The 2011 season was highlighted by double AllAmerican as a freshman, Alec Faldermeyer (weight/hammer) and standout half-miler Cory Primm (1:44.71,new school record). Faldermeyer also won the 2011USATF Junior National hammer crown and a gold medalat the PanAm Junior Games. Maynard also coachedDerek Eager, a redshirt during the 2011 season, tothe USATF Jr. National javelin crown and a spot in thePanAm Junior Games. The men finished tied for third atthe Pac-10 championships as Primm and Greg Woepsecaptured individual titles. Several athletes competedat NCAAs and earned All-American honors as the menfinished 37th as a team.Maynard also coached then freshman hammer thrower,Ida Storm, to double All-American honors in the weightthrow and hammer in 2011.Under his direct tutelage, Maynard was instrumental inthe development of three javelin throwers that qualifiedfor nationals. Newcomer Zaybree Haury tossed the thirdlongest throw in school history en route to qualifying forthe national meet while redshirt freshman Cody Danielson threw the ninth best mark and also qualified for theNCAA meet. Derek Eager came back from injury andalso qualified for the national meet.In his first year in charge of the men’s program (2010),the Bruins found much success. During the indoor and outdoor season, UCLA athletes posted two school recordsand four marks on the all-time top-10 list. Cory Primm setthe school record in the 800m (1:45.70), while the DMRteam broke the indoor mark (9:31.70). The 4x100mrelay, Primm, Scott Crawford (800m) and Dylan Knight(steeple) each competed at the NCAA Outdoor meet,with Primm placing fifth to earn All-American honors. The4x100m relay also earned All-American honors afteradvancing to the relay final at Outdoors.In the discus Wruck and Kosecki shined once againas and during the indoor season Ida Storm hit a bigpersonal best to earn runner-up honors at the nationalchampionship.Three throwers redshirted the 2010 season, while othersbattled injuries throughout the year. Bo Taylor, NigelDavies, Tom Nagengast and Mark Weber all competedin the post-season.In his first season overseeing both programs both the menand women finished in the top five of the Pac-12 with themen placing third and the women fourth. The men wentIn his nine years as the head coach at Boise State,Maynard led a program which produced several historicevents - back-to-back (2004 and 2005) national cham-2015 Track & Field Media GuideThe top individual highlight was Eleni Kafourou becomingthe first female student-athlete at Boise State to win aNCAA National Championship (long jump). Along withKafourou’s national title, Boise State earned a totalof seven NCAA All-America awards in track and fieldthat year.Boise State also made its presence known at the nationallevel with Maynard at the helm with four straight top25 finishes for the men’s team at the NCAA NationalOutdoor Championships. The Bronco men were 16th atthe 2006 NCAA National Outdoor Championships, 14thin 2005, 15th in 2004 and 24th in 2003. In 2009, theBronco men finished 25th at the NCAA Outdoor meet.Maynard guided Bronco student-athletes to over 70individual WAC Championships and over 90 marks onBoise State’s all-time top three performance lists.Maynard came to Boise State following an outstandingassistant coaching career at the University of Arizona.He was the associate head track and field coach forthe Wildcat program for 13 years prior to joining theBroncos. While coaching at Arizona, Maynard guided32 individual NCAA Division I All-Americans, includingthree NCAA National Champions.Maynard’s coaching resume also includes a two-yearstint as the assistant strength and conditioning coach atArizona, where he worked with the Wildcat footballprogram as well as being responsible for the Arizonatrack and field, swimming and tennis teams. He began hiscollegiate coaching career at Mesa Community College(Ariz.) where he was the assistant track and field coachfrom 1982-84, and in 1987.Maynard was also instrumental in bringing a world-classfacility to Bronco Track & Field. During his first two yearsleading the Broncos, Maynard and Boise State weresuccessful in purchasing a world championship calibertrack and helped construct the building to put it in. TheMondo track was used by USA Track and Field and theGeorgia Dome for the national indoor championships.The building is the Idaho Sports Center located in theIdaho Center complex in Nampa, Idaho. The track waspurchased with a 250,000 cash gift from John Jackson,President of Jacksons Food Stores in Meridian, Idaho.Boise State has hosted several major meets, includingsix WAC Indoor Championships. The facility hosted itsfirst national meet in 2005 with the USA Indoor Master’sChampionships. Boise State has submitted bids to hostfuture NCAA Indoor National Championships.Outside the collegiate world, Maynard has coacheda World Champion, five different Olympians, a PanAmerican gold medalist, five USA Track and FieldChampions and three American Junior Champions. Oneof Maynard’s former athletes Tony Washington (199096), won the World Championship in the discus in 1999.Washington also won the gold medal in the discus atthe 1991 Pan American Games along with five USANational Championships.Maynard is currently an Executive Committee memberof the United States Track Coaches Association and theNCAA Division I Track and Field Executive Committee.Maynard was also the head coach for the USA Trackand Field team in its dual meet against Germany in1996. He has served USA Track and Field as the Regional Decathlon Chairman, the United States OlympicCommittee as an Elite Throws Clinician, and has been thelead throws clinician for the USA/Visa Decathlon team.Maynard resides in Valencia with his wife, Dee. Theyhave a daughter named Allison and a son namedMichael.

Most recently, Volunteerjavelin thrower Kyle Quinn earned second teamAll-America honors for his tenth place finish in Eugene at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships.JOHN FRAZIERMen’s Head Coach2nd SeasonUCLA ‘86John Frazier enters his second season at UCLA asthe head men’s track coach. He also directs thethrows, primarily the shot put and discus.In his first season at the helm of the men’s program,Coach Frazier helped lead the Bruins to a dualmeet win over rival USC and some impressive individual performances on the national stage.
