PASTOR’S MESSAGEDear Parishioners,The gospel of Mark begins at a very quick pace. In the first chapter alone we read of Jesus’ preparation for ministry(Baptism and temptation), the call of His first disciples, teaching in the synagogue, and a number of healings. The passageprovided for us in today’s Gospel gives us a glimpse of a typical day in Jesus’ early ministry. Having cured a man of demonicspirits in the synagogue, Jesus goes to the house of Simon and Andrew where He cures Simon’s mother-in-law. Peopleapproached Him from all over the town bringing their loved ones who were ill. He tries the next morning to go off to praybut continues to be sought after, then He declares His intentions to move along to preach the good news in neighboringvillages. The liturgy today calls us to reflect on Jesus’ ministry of preaching and healing, His authority over the powers of eviland His reconciling mission over two thousand years ago. But our reflection doesn’t stop there because Jesus, crucified andrisen from the dead, continues that ministry today through the Church. We have to think about the ways that Jesus is at workin our midst today.Consider the work of evangelization. Jesus came to announce the Gospel of God, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the good news.” The Church announces this good news day in and dayout. In the second reading Saint Paul tells of the obligation to preach the Gospel. He looks at this obligation in terms ofrecompense and stewardship – the Gospel has been entrusted to him, not for himself alone, but for the good of others.Pope John Paul II was a modern day example of this work of evangelization. He traveled all over the world offeringthe good news of Jesus and calling all people to respect the dignity of every human person. He asked the Church to use everyopportunity to reflect on the Gospel and the work of evangelization. He asked us to do this, not for ourselves, but that wemight reach out to others. One of the blessings of the Second Vatican Council is that countless numbers of adults have seizedthe opportunity to further their understanding of the Christian faith and take part in pastoral formation programs. They dothis to deepen their relationship with Christ and to be of service to the Church in the work of spreading the Gospel.Consider the healing ministry of the Church. We hear in the Gospel of all those who brought their loved ones in needof healing. Jesus’ healing is a central focus in the early ministry described by Mark. The Church strives to extend Jesus’healing hands in our hospitals, nursing homes, and healthcare facilities, promoting an environment that respects the dignityof each person. Thousands of people regularly visit the sick and the elderly. Many are asked to bring to them the greatestgift of Jesus – the Eucharist. The Gospel refers to Jesus’ authority over demons. We can’t find it easy to relate to this aspect, but I think it is safeto say that Jesus did have a real power to overcome evil. The Church witnesses to the fight against evil in the world today. It calls upon all Christians, and all people of good will, to face the darkness of evil and sin. How many people do we knowwho join in the lament of Job given to us in today’s first reading? Who in our midst finds life a drudgery? I think of all thosewho give of themselves in service and outreach. I am inspired by all those who work to bring hope to those who struggle andmourn, by those who promote justice and respect for all human life.In Mark’s portrayal Jesus is busy and indeed energetic. But the fact is that the risen Lord is just as busy today. Hecalls upon each of us to experience His love, His power, and to reach out bringing this good news to others. He counts on usto proclaim this Gospel in every corner of the world. Just like the villagers in Galilee, everyone is looking for Jesus Christ. The world needs Him. By our living the gospel values we point to the presence of Christ. He is present, calling all toexperience the Good News of God’s reign – it is for this purpose that He has come.God bless you,HAVE A HEART – HELP A BABY:The Respect Life Group will hold a Valentine’s Day Baby Shower on the weekend of February 10 & 11 to assist needywomen with babies and women in crisis pregnancies. On that weekend, please pick up a mini-diaper which containsa gift suggestion for needed items. These mini-diapers will be given out at the doors of the Church on that weekendonly. Please return your unwrapped gift to the Narthex on the following weekend. These items will be distributed toMom’s House in Phoenixville (a non-profit day-care center which aids unwed mothers trying to finish their education),A Baby’s Breath in Norristown (a crisis pregnancy center), and Visitation BVM in Kensington (our sister parish). Itemsrequested will be diapers, formula, clothing, gift cards for various items, and food for toddlers.Thank you for your generous support of this program each year.LENT BEGINS THIS YEAR ON FEBRUARY 14TH VALENTINE’S DAYIt is a lot easier to focus on our personal spiritual development than it is to work for the good of others. Perhaps noteating chocolate for a few weeks might help us pray more, but the way of Christ implies that the discipline of sacrificeshould extend beyond just ourselves to help create the sort of world where the lowly are uplifted and the outcastwelcomed. Having Valentine’s Day at the very start of Lent this year can be about more than just us feeling guilty aboutindulging during Lent, it can remind us that sacrificing ourselves for the sake of love is the greatest sacrifice of all.[taken from a blog by Julie Clawson dated 02-14-13)

Hetalks of troubled days and restless nights. But he does mentionthat the days move along swiftly, which can remind us that ourtime here on earth is quite limited and should be well spent.Responsorial Psalm: PS 147:1-2, 3-4, 5-6R. (cf. 3a) Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23 Paul explainsto the Corinthians that he has no choice, but must preach thegospel. He tells of making himself all things to all people, inorder to save some of them. He reminds them that he does thiswillingly, in the hope of sharing in the blessings of the gospel.Gospel: Mark 1:29-39 Jesus cured Simonand Andrew’s mother of a fever, thenothers with illnesses or demons came tosee Him. He cured those who were ill, andcast out the demons of the others. Then Hewent off and prayed alone until Hisfollowers sought Him out. Jesus and Hisdisciples then moved on to other villagesto proclaim the good news.HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly“Rising very early before dawn, He left and went to a desertedplace, where He prayed. Simon and those who were with Himpursued Him and on finding Him said: ‘Everyone is lookingfor You.’ He said to them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby villagesthat I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come’.So He went into their synagogues preaching and driving outdemons throughout the whole of Galilee.”Jesus the healer, Jesus the pray-er, Jesus the preacher andteacher. A few verses capture His ministry and message that Heoffers. Fast forward and the need is the same: ‘everyone islooking for You.’Many are looking for fame, comfort, riches, but not for whatJesus has brought. We are called to help them find the Lordwho means so much to us. Who is it that has fallen away fromthe church? They are still loved by the Lord. Who do I knowcaught in a bad habit, a vice, or depression? They are still lovedby the Lord. What they need is someone who looked for the Lord, has foundHim and wishes to share that same positive experience withthem. As I live my conviction and faith, I bring Him to them, and they to Him.
