The SouthCarolina Arts Commission Media Arts Center encourages the growth andunderstanding of the media arts through programs and services to mediaartists, organizations and the public in a ten-state southeastern regionwhich includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana,Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Centerprograms provide services in the areas of media arts production, funding,exhibition , distribution, education, and information resources. Both theSouth Carolina Arts Commission and the South Carolina Arts CommissionMedia Arts Center receive funding support from the National Endowmentfor the Arts.Equipment Access ProgramProducing media art is difficult and expensive for today's media artist TheSouth Carolina Arts Commission Media Arts Center provides some of thefinest audio, fi lm and video production and post-production equipmentava ilable to the media artist in the Southeast Equipment and facilities areavailable to media artists meeting the criteria for the independent rate atrental costs one-quarter to one-third those of commercial rental rates,providing affordable access to today's sophisticated image-making tools .The Center maintains a wide range of sync-sound and silent 16mm film ,broadcast video, lighting, audio, Super 8mm and S-VHS production equipment Post production resources include 16mm film, Beta SP, S-VHS andaudio post production suites. A 16mm optical printer and computergraphics system are also available for artist access. Overnight accommodations are offered to provide the round-the-clock, uninterrupted supportiveenvironment which creative media post-production requires. RATE ScHEDULESThe Independent RateThe primary purpose of The Media Arts Center's Equipment Access Programis to provide the media artist with tools necessary for the production ofindependent film and tapes that express innovative and diverse artisticvoices in our evolving media culture. The rate schedule listed in this book isthe independent rate. A media artist is eligible to use MAC's media equipmentat the independent rate when that artist is:I. working on an original work that has been conceived solely by theartist;2. not working on a hired or contract project;3. working on a project free of corporate and/o r commercial influence;4. using her/his own money, grants money, or other funds that are free ofany artistic restrictions.Center resources at the independent rate are not available to mediaproducers who a re trying to reduce costs of commercial media produ c tions. MAC's equipment and studios at the independent rate are availableto independents not permanently employed by, but temporarily workingwith, not-for-profit organizations or institutions when creative control ofthe project remains completely with the independent artistThe Not-For-Profit RateMAC's equipment and facilities are available directly to not-for-profitorganizations or institutions at approximately twice the independent rate.Call the Media Resource Coordinator for details.II
