PAST, PRESENT AND FUTUREBishop Manogue Catholic HighSchool, BMCHS, has offered aCatholic faith-and-values-basededucation to three generations. However, northern Nevada Catholiceducation dates back over 140 years. In 1864, ecclesiastical powerhouseBishop Patrick Manogue and theDaughters of Charity of St. Vincentde Paul founded a school for 300children in the gold and silverboomtown of Virginia City. Atthe turn of the 20th century, as themining industry waned, the TruckeeMeadows communities grew, andCatholic education grew along withthem, beginning with parochialgrammar schools. SecondaryCatholic education in northernNevada debuted on September 13,1948, when Bishop Manogue CatholicHigh School opened its doors for thefirst time. The campus was locatedat the former Flick Ranch, which isnear what is now the intersection ofEast McCarran Boulevard and MillStreet. Within ten years BMCHShad outgrown the property andrelocated in the fall of 1957 to itssecond campus site, “The School OnThe Hill,” adjacent to the Universityof Nevada.Bishop Manoguetraditions continued to thrive andgrow through the spring of 2004.Together, the two earlier campusesgraduated over 4,300 students. In thelate 1990s, a dedicated and ambitiousgroup of northern Nevadans, manyof them alumni, began the effortwhichculminatedin the fall of 2004with the openingof the third BishopManogue campus insouth Reno. Thesevisionaries rallied thesupport of generousphilanthropists, as wellas literally hundreds ofindividual donors, tocreate the state-of-theart campus located on S. Virgininastreet. Here the BMCHS family—students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni, are proud to provide aBishop Manogue education to newgenerations. The BMCHS Spire, first raised atop Christthe Teacher Chapel on October 9, 1958is a 5 ton steel superstructure, wrappedin copper which stands 80 feet tall. After30 years in place, a violent windstormtoppled it in December, 1988. It was reerected after repairs in 1989. In the fall of2003, the steeple was relocated to the newcampus where it sits atop the new Christthe Teacher Chapel.bishopmanogue.orgFall 2007 Miner Messenger9Manogue LegacyTHE BISHOP MANOGUE LEGACY:
