Picture yourself perched excitedly atthe top of the stairs on Christmas morning, likea little child who is waiting to come down andlook at his presents. When the moment finallyarrives, you rush down the stairs to find a wholestack of gifts with your name on them. Someare in a neat little pile, while others are hidden, waiting for you to find them. Even though allthe gifts are beautifully wrapped, the contentsof each package are clearly labeled on the front:Patience. Wisdom. Fortitude. Humility.Peace. And then there is the biggest box of all:Joy. You immediately understand where thesegifts came from – your heavenly Father. Heknows just what you need and has given it all toyou.Which gift do you open first? Why not startwith the biggest gift? So you go to the packagethat has “JOY” written on the side and open itexcitedly.Immediately, youare filled withbeautiful warmth,a heartfelt, sincere delightthat emanatesfrom the center ofyour soul. This ismore than justhappiness, forthat is a morefleeting andsuperficial feeling. This joy is deeprooted life, lifeaffirming, andwholesome. It’slike having an eternal flame of contentmentinside that can’t be extinguished. What amarvelous gift!Joy is the perfect gift to open first. From theAnnunciation to Mary to the birth of Jesus, wehave heard the angles reminding us of the joythat God wants us to have. “Joy to the World”is not just a popular Christmas carol but God’spromise to us. He is offering us the joy thatcomes because Jesus has not only entered theworld; he has entered our hearts! In a sense, joy is also the basis for all the other gifts. Withjoy come peace, patience, courage and so muchmore. This Christmas Eve, rejoice in God’s goodness. Then take that gift of joy with you as you enterthe New Year so that you can share it with allthe people God puts in you path. “Lord, thank

Manogue Helmsman - December, 2014you for your gift of joy! Help me carry this giftwith me and share it with all the people I meet, family, friends, co-workers, and even foes!2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16 and Luke 1: 67-79.Our commitment to excellence and obedienceto God are a part of our daily lives as Catholicgentlemen conducting the business of theKnights of Columbus while following theprinciples of our Order - Charity, Unity,Fraternity and Patriotism through the conduit ofour Assemblies and Councils as was the visionof our founder, Venerable Fr. Michael J.McGivney. Your Faithful Navigator, SKMichael BradyDid you know Those interested only in board games atChristmas might just be chess nuts roastingby an open fire! And remember: Christmasdinner is a place where you can really talkturkey. Our Faithful Friar The Knights of Columbus have, sincetheir founding, been staunchdefenders of the Church, and haveled the way in promoting trulyChristian values. One issue which engagesmuch of their attention today is the Right toLife. They have been prominent in assertingthe value of each individual life, the ideathat God gave each of us the gift of life andwants us to respect that life in ourselves andothers, no matter how different from usthose others may be.The Right to Life struggle is a war waged onmany fronts. One front is crisis pregnancycare. Although it gets relatively littleattention it plays an increasingly importantrole the fight against abortion. Here again, the knights have done God-inspired work insupporting the selfless people (mostlyvolunteers) who keep this wonderfulministry going. It is certainly among themost important work in the world today.Done out of love, it reflects God’s love tothose whom it serves.Pam Belleck is a health and science writerfor the ultra pro-abortion New York Times. Here is what she wrote in that paper onJanuary 5th 2013. ‘With free pregnancy testsand ultrasounds, along with diapers, parenting classes and even temporaryhousing, pregnancy centers are playing anincreasingly influentialrole in the anti-abortionmovement. While mostattention has focused onscores of new state lawsrestricting abortion, thecenters have beengrowing in numbers andgaining state financingand support. Largely runby conservativeChristians, the centerssay they offer whatRoland Warren, head of Care Net, one of thelargest pregnancy center organizations, described as “a compassionate approach tothis issue.” As they expand, they are addingon-call or on-site medical personnel andemploying sophisticated strategies to attractwomen, including Internet searchoptimization and mobile units near PlannedParenthood clinics. “They’re really thedarlings of the pro-life movement,” saidJeanneane Maxon, vice president forexternal affairs at Americans United for

Manogue Helmsman - December, 2014Life, an anti-abortion group. “That groundlevel, one-on-one, reaching-the-womanwhere-she’s-at approach.”’. In her January2013 article cited here, Belleck says therewere, at the time she wrote the article, about2500 crisis pregnancy centers in the countrycompared toabout 1800“abortionproviders”.Since then,we knowthat asubstantialnumber of“abortionproviders”have closed, and it seems likely the CPCshave grown in number. The legislatures of South Dakota, Michigan,Missouri, Ohio, Florida, Alabama, Arizona,Georgia, Missouri, South Dakota,Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, Wisconsinand Oklahoma, all have passed resolutionspraising the CPCs in those states. InMissouri the vote (taken in May 2011) in theState House was 122 to 5 with sixabstaining. The resolution said, among otherthings, “The life-affirming impact ofpregnancy resource centers and maternityhomes on women, families, and thecommunities they serve is considerable andgrowing, and pregnancy resource centersand maternity homes serve with integrityand compassion ”In Wisconsin, the resolution was also passed(in 2011) by large majorities. The Senatevote was 28 to 5. Part of that resolutionreads “Resolved by the senate, the assemblyconcurring, that the members of theWisconsin legislature strongly supportpregnancy care centers in theirunique, positive contributions to theindividual lives of women, men, and babies–both born and unborn; and, be it furtherresolved, that the Wisconsin legislaturecommends the compassionate work of tensof thousands of volunteers and paid staff atpregnancy care centers in Wisconsin andacross the United States.” Perhaps thegreatest indicator of their effectiveness is theferocious legal attacks being made on themby the abortion industry, but that’s a storyfor another day.Needless to say the California Legislature isunlikely to recognize the great work thecenters do in this state. Here in Sacramentowe can site the Sacramento Life Center, theBishop Gallegos Maternity Home andAlternative Pregnancy Center to name afew. Working in concert with them areProject Rachel, the Gabriel Project andShowers on wheels, which provides showersfor the expectant mothers periodically. They, like others across the country, showthe love of God to distressed women in apowerful way, even though they face a morehostile climate than what prevails in mostother states. We pray that God will continueto bless their efforts and that the Knightswill continue their generous support ofthem.

It presupposeson the part of thepenitent, contrition, confession, and promise atleast of satisfaction; on the part of the minister, valid reception of the Order ofPriesthood and jurisdiction, granted bycompetent authority, over the person receivingthe sacrament. That there is in the Churchpower to absolve sins committedafter baptism the Council of Trent thusdeclares: "But the Lord then principallyinstituted the Sacrament of Penance, when, being raised from the dead, He breathed uponHis disciples saying, 'Receive ye the Holy Ghost.Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiventhem, and whose sins you shall retain, they areretained.' By which action so signal, and wordsso clear the consent of all the Fathers has everunderstood that the power of forgiving andretaining sins was communicated tothe Apostles, and to their lawful successors forthe reconciling of the faithful who have fallenafter baptism" (Sess. XIV, i). Nor is there lackingin divine revelation proof of such power; theclassical texts are those found in Matthew16:19; 18:18, and in John 20:21-23. To Peter aregiven the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Sin isthe great obstacle to entrance intothe kingdom, and over sin Peter is supreme. To Peter and to all the Apostles is given thepower to bind and to loose, and this againimplies supreme power both legislative andjudicial: power to forgive sins, power to freefrom sin's penalties. This interpretationbecomes more clear in studyingthe rabbinical literature, especially of OurLord's time, in which the phrase to bind and to
