ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH95 MARKET STREETMOUNT CLEMENS, MICHIGAN 48043December 27, 2020 Phone: (586)468-4578Website: www.stpetermtclemens.comBigNews . By Fr. Douglas BignallȱFeast of the Holy FamilyI once heard a family therapist say, “It is important for every family to get its saints out of heaven and its sinners out ofhell.” The point is that it doesn’t pay to either idealize or demonize our families (or fellow family members). Often our perceptions of family go unexamined and yet exert powerful influences on our world view²including our view of faithand community. On this weekend dedicated to the Holy Family of Jesus and as we approach a new year with limitlesspossibility for ourselves and our loved ones these following questions might provide a helpful reflection and perhapssome fresh insight as to how we can all grow into better, holy families. Here goes .: x Abraham trusted God’s promise of boundless heirs, even despite the evidence to the contrary. Do I trust God thatmy life and my work will prove fruitful? x The heart of what makes a family are bonds of love and respect. What are my feelings about family? Who would Iconsider to be the key members of my “family” in my day to day life? Do the patterns of my family affectmy relationships within my family and upon others? x The gospel tells of wonderful predictions offered by Simeonand Anna. How do early expectations of family membersaffect me today? x It must have been puzzling for Joseph and Mary to live withthe knowledge that the “favor of God” was upon their onlyson. How do we live with those around us, working togetherday by day and yet knowing that they are called to be saints(even as we are)? Quote to Ponder It is necessary to go back to seeing the family as the sanctuary of life. The family is indeed sacred: It is the place inwhich life²the gift of God²can be properly welcomed and protected against the many attacks to which it is exposed, andcan develop in accordance with what constitutes authentic human growth. St. John Paul II in Centesimus Annus 1991 Have a Grace filled New Year, YÜA WÉâzÄtá U zÇtÄÄ

We, the parish staff, want to thank youfor your kind words, cards and the stories you have sharedabout Fr. Mike. We are glad that technology allowed somany to be present at his funeral via the livestream. Fr. Mike served as a very young priest at Shrine of the LittleFlower in Royal Oak. I found the homily he gave at his #nalMass there 40 years ago. I share it with you because it couldeasily have been similar to his #nal homily here at St. Peter. Sheila Roy, Pastoral Associate Today’s readings lead us to reflect on who we are and whatwe are about. In the rst reading, we have Melchizadek, theeternal high priest and the king of Salem, praying in thanksgiving to God the Father using the symbols of bread andwine. In the second reading, we have St. Paul recounting theFirst Eucharist, the meal of Thanksgiving. St. Luke speaks ofthe feeding of the ve thousand after Jesus give a blessingover the food. He gave thanks. Inferred was the fact thatMelchizadek and the Apostles had a reason for giving thanks. Also inferred is the fact that they were not totally capable ofdoing the world of God on their ownufeeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, healing those who were ill, givingthanks for all the Lord’s Good Gifts. It is in light of these factsof Scripture and Faith that I ask you for four favors. The rst is simple. The greatest honor that can be paid toany priest is that those whom he has served continue to growin wisdom, knowledge and grace before God and man. It hasalways been His work because you have always been Hispeople. I ask that as you continue to grow, you continue tobe His Family of Faith. Secondly, I ask you to forgive me.There were times when you were in the hospital and I did notvisit you. You were hungry for the Word of God and I did notfeed you. You were thirsty for someone to listen to you and Iwas not available. You were hurt and I did not heal you. Forthese failings, I am sorry. Thirdly, please pray for Fr. Pruswho continues to be your shepherd here at Shrine and for allpriests. Pray for them. Please pray for priests who followme. that they might be true instruments in the hands of theLord. Please pray for me.Finally, let us all give thankstogether not only for what God has been to us, but also forwhat we have been and will continue to be for one another. I have spend a great deal of time and prayer over these concluding remarks to you. During that time I found a passagefrom literature which expresses my feelings about our relationship in a very general way. The passage is from JonathanLivingston Seagull: “Sullivan sighed, but he did not argue. ‘I think I’ll miss you, Jonathan,’ was all he said. ‘Sully, for shame!’ Jonathan saidin reproach, ‘and don’t be foolish! What are we trying to practice everyday? If your friendship depends on things likespace and time, then when we nally overcome space and time, we’ve destroyed our own brotherhood! But, overcomespace, and all we have left is here. Overcome time, and all we have left is now. And in the middle of here and now, don’tyou think that we might see each other once or twice?’” God Bless. Fr. Mike Shrine of the Little Flower

St. Peter Parish, Mount ClemensI see the countless Christmas trees Around the world below, With tiny lights like heaven's stars Reflecting in the snow. The sight is so spectacular Please wipe away that tear For I'm spending Christmas With Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs That people hold so dear But earthly music can't compare With the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you The joy their voices bring For it's beyond description To hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, Trust God and have no fear For I'm spending Christmas With Jesus Christ this year. I can't tell you of the splendor Or the peace here in this place. Can you imagine Christmas With our Savior, face to face? May God uplift your spirit As I tell Him of your love Then pray for one another As you lift your eyes above. So let your hearts be joyful And let your spirits sing For I'm spending Christmas in Heaven And I'm walking with the king! St. Peter Parish, Mount ClemensPage 5On December 12th, Santa was our special guest at a drive by where 63 children were able to see him from a safedistance in their cars. Several people helped with the planning, preparation and the actual drive by and we thankeach of them for making this event so successful. The boys and girls were treated to a wave from Frosty, Rudolph’s blinking nose, a chance to put their letters toSanta in a special mailbox and Christmas carols as they waited for their turn to greet Santa. A special thanks to Santa for bringing such joy to our children. Their smiles and happiness sparkled through theraindrops and truly made the day. Merry Christmas to all! Mrs. Coll & Mrs. Loyal
