KEYNOTE SPEAKERCyndy Luzinski Dementia TogetherCyndy Hunt Luzinski is an advancedpractice nurse and certified dementiapractitioner with a nursing backgroundranging from critical care to communitycase management. She is the founder and executive directorof the local nonprofit organization,Dementia Together, formerly known as"Dementia-Friendly Communities ofNorthern Colorado." Dementia Together’smission is to create communities in whichno one has to walk the dementia journeyalone.

The dementia journey can beoverwhelming, but no one has towalk it alone.

In the meantimeIn the meantime until cures are found,we help people care well.

EducationContented DementiaThe SPECAL MethodBurford, England

Enrichment—Memory cafes and mobile memory cafes, social gatherings

Hope—social connection,friendships, awareness,purpose, and empowerment

Our vision:Living well with dementia is the expectation, not the exception.

Compassion, like grace, needs to go in both directions

Compassion FatigueThe expectation that we,with limited resources, can be immersedin trying to care forvulnerable people and not betouched by the sense of inadequacywe feel is unrealistic. It’s like expecting to stand out in ablizzard and not get cold.

What iscompassionfatigue? The emotional and physicalburden created by caring forothers in distressIt can feel like PTSD, often calledsecondary vicarious stressdisorder—when caring leavesyou emotionally drained ortraumatized (secondary trauma)

Signs ofcompassionfatigueAnxiety, muscle tension, digestive problemsComfort eating and drinkingSense of hopelessness (dread)Decreased ability to empathizeIrritability and impatienceDecreased productivity and job/relational satisfactionTrouble sleepingUrge to isolate yourself from othersSelf-doubt and reduced self-esteemDifficulty making decisions

Compassion FatigueCompassion fatigue, when prolonged, can lead to burnoutWhen the demands exceedemotional, mental, and physicalresources“When giving is no longer living”

CompassionFatigueAnguish of 2020: Pandemic, moral distress (it shouldn’t be thisway) resilience (all in this together)Languish of 2021: Dulling ofdelight, muddling through the days, dwindling of drive, indifference toyour indifference, aimlessness, sense of stagnation and emptiness, like looking through a foggywindshield

LanguishingFeeling overwhelmed: too much coming at usFeeling blah: afraid to invest too much energyinto anything.Adam Grant: Feeling Blah During the Pandemic? It's Called Languishing - The New York Times (nytimes.com)Author of Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know

Best way to get through languishing: Create flow—the elusive state of absorption in a meaningful challenge or momentary bond

Energizingor draining?Creating flow—does this energize me? ORDo I have to manufacture energy to do this?

Position

Position your mindThink about what you think about“Because what you give your attention tois the person you become. Put anotherway: the mind is the portal to the soul, andwhat you fill your mind with will shape thetrajectory of your character. In the end, your life is no more than the sum of whatyou gave your attention to.Ruthless Elimination of HurryJohn Mark Comer

Position your body(and be where your feet are)Be around people who energize youwith connection and supportInvest in a community (friends, supportgroup, faith community).
