The Foundation supportslifelong learning because education makes adifference in the lives of individuals, families andultimately our community. Galveston College is atremendous asset to our city in providing highereducation and training for trades. The Foundationworks in partnership with the College to providescholarships and remove financial barriers forGalveston students who are pursuing a certificateor degree.or equivalent, who resides in the GalvestonCollege taxing district, has the opportunity toattend college, receive an associate degree, oracquire technical training through a workforcedevelopment program and obtain a certificate.Since its inception, Universal Access hasproudly awarded over 1,900 students withscholarships. Between fall 2020 and summer2021, the Foundation provided 195 UniversalAccess and Universal Access Plus scholarships,totaling 191,712.In 1996, the Galveston College Foundation (GCF)was established as a community-based non-profitto provide families within the Galveston Collegetaxing district the opportunity for a brighterfuture through higher education. UniversalAccess (UA) was established in 2001 in an effortto secure fully paid tuition for public and privatelocal high school graduates who wished toattend Galveston College. The vision of UniversalAccess was achieved through development andgrowth of an endowment significant enough toguarantee each Galveston accredited high school(public or private), home-schooled, and GEDgraduate the financial aid necessary for up to twoyears of education and training. The foundersof UA believed the investment that would paythe greatest dividends and make the biggestdifference in the community is an investment inthe higher education and training of its residents.In addition, due to the generosity of donors,from other established named and endowedscholarships, we were able to award anadditional 50,423 in scholarships to students.Universal Access Scholarships are provided toensure that every eligible high school graduate,I hope you enjoy reading the wonderful storiesof some of these students within this annualreport.As the assets of the Foundation rise, I amproud that we will be able to continue toincrease the scholarship support we provide toGalveston College students. We are thankfulto the leaders who had the vision and foresightto establish Universal Access and to the donorswho have contributed to scholarships over theyears. Over thepast year, you will see Galveston College hasresponded with new and enhanced programsas new market needs emerge. We work inpartnership with other institutions of highereducation and local businesses to provideeducation and training needed by today’sworkforce.4Galveston College FoundationW. Myles Shelton, E.D., PresidentGalveston CollegeThe college experienced a historic milestonein December 2020 when its first groupof bachelor’s degree-seeking studentsgraduated from the Bachelor of AppliedScience in Healthcare Management program.The college will open a Bachelor of Science inNursing program in fall 2022.And proudly, Galveston College will breakground on a new Health Science EducationCenter in spring/summer 2022. This newbuilding will house our nursing and alliedhealth programs as these programs continueto grow.The Galveston College Foundationdistributed over 242,000 in scholarshipsthis past year as of August 31, 2021. Donors’unwavering commitment to Galveston andeducation has meant a great difference as weall continue to experience a global pandemicand the many challenges it has brought with it.The financial support students receive throughUniversal Access, Universal Access Plus andother endowed and named scholarships hasoftentimes been the difference between stayingenrolled and dropping out.The 2020-2021 academic year once againhighlighted the best of Galveston and everyday we are thankful for the faculty, staff andstudents who are part of our Galveston Collegecommunity.2021 Annual Report

I am delighted andthankful to report that this past year hasexceeded my expectations. Not only didthe community very warmly welcome me,there was also an outpouring of generosityfor the mission of the Galveston CollegeFoundation that flowed throughout the year.It is apparent how important education is toGalveston. I am proud to be a part of such acommunity.Galveston College FoundationBetween spring 2021 and spring 2022, threenew GCF scholarships were endowed withgifts of 50,000 each by generous donors; theFoundation awarded almost 200 UniversalAccess scholarships; and as a result of thegenerosity of donors past and present, a totalof over 200,000 in scholarships were grantedto Galveston College students.As we gathered for the President’s Receptionon March 31, we recognized donors andscholars with the theme “Celebrating Today,Building Tomorrow.” This theme capturesthe spirit of those who support and partnerwith the Foundation. Together we celebrateour students, uplift them, and through theirachievement, build a better tomorrow forGalveston and our region.I am honored to work together with you,the community, to improve the lives of ourstudents through lifelong learning. The scholarship allows students inelectrical-electronics, instrumentation, andwelding programs to obtain the necessarycertifications to allow them to begin workimmediately with the skills they need tosucceed.These graduates have gone on to work forsome of the area’s most prestigious employersearning good pay in high-demand fields. Insome cases, they have continued their studiesat Galveston College and gone on to receivetheir associate degree.The initial ten years of the scholarshipprogram resulted in 25 Associate of AppliedScience degrees and 166 Level 1 and Level 2Certificates.CECILE KEMPNERVocational Technical ScholarshipThe Harris and Eliza Kempner Family Fundhas awarded Galveston College a new giftof 100,000 towards the Cecile KempnerVocational Technical Scholarship. The gift willprovide tuition assistance for students overthe next ten years pursuing technical careersin, Electrical-Electronics, Instrumentation, andWelding Technology.Between 2013 and 2021 the Cecile KempnerVocational Technical Scholarship awarded6Galveston College Foundationalmost 100,000 in 129 scholarships.These Kempner scholarship recipients haveobtained jobs in the Galveston Countyarea. By focusing on a combination ofacademics, hands-on training, and careerpreparation, these programs have offered aunique pathway to high-demand high-wagejobs. “The Kempner Scholarship has beenessential in helping students achieve theircareer goals,” says Vera Lewis-Jasper, Dean,Technical & Professional Education.2021 Annual Report

I was very happy and also motivatedwhen I discovered I was a recipient of theaward.I was born and raised in Galveston. I graduatedhigh school this past year at Ball High Schoolin the class of 2021. My dad and sister alsograduated from Ball High, and my sister isalso attending Galveston College. I will bethe second one to get a degree in the familybehind my sister.I took many classes through GalvestonCollege while at Ball High. I am very gratefulfor the staff at Galveston College—from thecounselors to advisors—who have helpedtremendously when starting my first semesterin college where I am majoring in civilengineering. At the end of the spring semesterI plan on receiving my degree from GalvestonCollege. The plan, as of right now, is to pursuea career in Engineering.
