Wehope you enjoyed the “New Thing” we did together. As our guest speaker, DeeO’Hara reminded us, United Methodist Women have been doing new things sincethey first began meeting 144 years ago.Our Annual Meeting Program highlighted the accomplishments of the GainesvilleDistrict United Methodist Women this year. I especially want to call attention to twoof our local units: The Women of Dahlonega UMC led the District again in our Reading Program, with 14 women completing one of the Reading Plans. Nine of the eighteen Rainbow Women in the Gainesville District come from the Sugar Hill Unit.Inside this issue:Registration formLenten Day Apart12Inspiration from VicePresident2District Social Action Report3Leadershhip Training4-82014 Exec Team Information9President’s Notes1Happening Aroundthe District10-11Cover Page andSave the Date13I loved hearing the stories about your local units this year: Cumming First UMCand AT&T shared their Mission Study with other United Methodist Women. I wasoverjoyed to learn that a new circle for young women was started at Clayton UMC.Trinity United Methodist Women and the Women at St. Paul on Summit Street celebrated with a United Methodist Women Day and Special Sunday Service. The Elizabeth Smith Circle One at New Hope in Gainesville helped to sponsor a recent missiontrip to the Orphanage Emanuel in Honduras. For over a decade, the Evening Circle atSt. Paul, Washington Street has provided Christmas for a family with a member underHospice Care.A special thank-you goes out to all the local units who offered their churches forour Executive Meetings, and other District and Conference events this year. Pleasecontinue to share with us what your local United Methodist Unit is doing. I am surethat Judy Jackson would love to highlight what you are doing in our next edition of theGainesville Light. Your stories show me that the United Methodist Women in theGainesville District are continuing to respond to God’s Call with Faith, Hope and Lovein Action on behalf of women, children and youth at home and around the world.Diane WestBehold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I willmake a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:19 (RSV)1

Inspiration from Vice PresidentAs I sit here and ponder what to write, my mindkeeps returning to the season of Advent thatwe are in. I truly love what Christmas is allabout, and I don’t mean the presents, shoppingand all the decorating that is involved in thistime of the year. What I truly love is celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus. We as a society have gotten so far away fromthe true meaning of Christmas. Most of us aretoo busy to just sit back, relax, and take in thebeauty of the birth of Jesus. Each year, I pullout my nativity sets; yes I have more than onesitting around, and admire the beauty that lies in this diorama of the nativity.I often wonder how Mary felt when she was told that she was going to give birthto Jesus. I wonder if she said, no way can I do this, or you have picked the wrongwoman for the job.Just as Mary may have thought that she was not the one for the job, we asUnited Methodist Women may think that we are not the one to Do SomethingNew, like being an officer on your local or district team. It may be that you arejust asked to help someone in need, take someone to town, or bake a cake for abake sale. All I am saying is that if you are willing, God will use you no matter howbig or small the mission may be. So, in the upcoming year if you have a mission orfeel like you have been called to take a bigger roll in your local unit or on the district team MAKE IT HAPPEN! God will be with you all the way.I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing all of you atour up coming events.Elainia Smith2
