Local NewsA4Siskiyou Source Wednesday, March 22, 2006Snowflake Bentley, Peace and.Vuja de?Ask a Librarianby Rick PerkinsGreetings readers! This week brings usan eclectic mix of questions, which uponbeing presented with the answers, willsurely prepare you to be a winning contestant on Jeopardy. Well, maybe not, butyou will certainly be in command of somereally nifty trivia with which you can trulyamaze or bore your friends! Here we go!Just in time for spring, Antonia asked,"How do people know that no twosnowflakes are alike?" I myself have laidawake at night imagining a Federallyfunded program with a highly paid university scientist employing an army of unpaidgraduate students carefully collectingsnowflakes by the gagillions in order toprovide fodder for a highly regarded published paper in Scientific America. Theyare wasting their time, Snowflake Bentleybeat them to the punch! It seems that back around the turn of thelast century, not Y2K the one before, aNew England scientist, with lots of time onhis hands, began collecting and examining snowflakes under the microscope. Hecontinued his work for the next forty yearstaking 5000 photos of snowflakes andworking up a system for categorizing 80different types of flakes. This earned himthe nickname Snowflake Bentley.Apparently he never found two alike! Hedid find that flakes come in all sorts ofshapes and sizes. Does this prove that notwo flakes are alike? Probably not, however for you statistics lovers out there, further research revealed that a snowflake iscomposed of over 180 billion moleculesand, therefore, the odds do not favor anytwo having exactly the same shape.Antonia, you may find peace of mindimagining that someone is still out therelooking for the elusive twin flakes! And speaking of peace.Abby asked,"Who invented the Peace Symbol?" Thesymbol so widely used during the VietnamWar era and mocked by some as the footprint of a chicken, was invented inEngland, in 1958, by Gerald Holom uponrequest of Lord Bertrand Russel. Russelwas head of the British campaign fornuclear disarmament and a primary sponsor of protests and the peace symbolbecame the badge for the "direct actioncommittee against nuclear war." Thepeace sign was actually designed fromthe naval flag code for the letters N and D(nuclear disarmament), N being two flagsstretched downward at a forty-five degreeangle and a D formed by two flags, onestraight up and the other straight down. When a circle was drawn around the combined flag symbols the Peace Sign wasborn! The Peace Sign was adopted in theUnited States by Bayard Rustin, a friendof Martin Luther King Jr., and Dr. Kingbegan using it during civil rights marches. The symbol went on to become a rallyingsign for ending the Vietnam War. Hmm,am I the only one who has the strangefeeling that we've been here before? Our last question for this week is fromMichelle. She asked, "What causes DejaVu?"The concept of Deja Vu is when a personseems absolutely convinced that a firstvisit to anarea or place is already familiar andknown. One possible medical cause forthis phenomenon may be that the opticand neural paths from our two eyes maybe slightly different. Or that our "newer"and "older," in some cases "much older"brain processing might be the explanationfor the feeling of deja vu. Then, of course, there is the past life, reincarnation schoolof mystic thought theory to explain thefeeling, but the scientists will tell you thatthere is absolutely no studies to supportthe existence of deja vu. I have to admitthat I have experienced this phenomenonupon several occasions and know of anumber of people who have but thenagain maybe it's just an old brain misfire! This week's "win a cup of joe on Rick,"from Wildwood Crossing, will go to thefirst person who can tell me who came upwith this parody on deja vu. "Do you everget that strange feeling of vuja de? NotdéjB vu; vuja de. It's the distinct sensethat, somehow, something that just happened has never happened before.Nothing seems familiar. And then suddenly the feeling is gone. Vuja de."The winner of last week's "cup of joe onRick" was Madeleine Ayres who came upwith the correct author, Ken Kesey, for the"on the bus." quote. According toBartlett's this ditty is from his 1968 workThe Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. This week's sources came from the following web sites. The information forSnowflake Bentley was acquired fromwww.starryskies.com. The Peace Signanswer was gleaned from www.designboom.com. The explanation for deja vucame fromhttp://mb-soft.com/public/dejavu.html.Got a question?
