The courseThis dynamic course begins in January with anintroduction and induction into the heart of thecollege, its workshops and studios. During the initialweeks students will be helped to settle and orientatethemselves and begin to experience what its like tostudy on a UK art course.Our expert arts team will support students to thinkand work like practicing artists or designers as well assupport individuals with their UCAS applications andportfolio preparation for interview.The available pathways are:Fine Artexperience and skills, and helps to develop knowledgeand understanding of what it is like to work as aprofessional, creative practitioner.Graphic DesignIllustrationFashion and Textiles3D DesignUnit 1, Unit 2 and Pathway SpecialismThis stage of the course will see students takingpart in exciting and challenging creative projects toextend their creative, expressive and technical skills.They will work in a range of different scales andmediums, sometimes independently, collaboratively oras part of a small creative team. This reflects real-lifecreative practices in the Creative Arts industry.Where possible in Unit 2, Industry facing or liveprojects with external clients are incorporated into thecurriculum. These provide students with importantPathway specialisms will focus on more subjectspecific skills and knowledge and offer studentsopportunities to access and use the colleges spaciousartists’ studios, a well-equipped 3D workshop, ahand-tools workshop, ceramics studio, photographicdarkroom, photographic studios, printmaking studio,Mac suites or the pattern cutting room.English for Academic PurposesOn arrival to the UK, students will benefit fromthe embedded English for Academic Purposesprogramme (EAP). This includes four hours ofdedicated tuition each week to complement andfully support the art curriculum. Students will receivelessons on the key study and language skills requiredto successfully complete this course. Additional IELTSsessions are available to support students to improvetheir IELTS grades for university study.8

Unit 4: Final Major ProjectAssessment and FeedbackThe Final Major Project (FMP) is a sustained, excitingand intense creative period within the course.It provides students with the opportunity to takecontrol of their own learning and demonstrate theirachievement by defining and describing what theypropose to study and how they will research anddevelop a body of independent work. The 10 weekproject provides students with the time to build uponprevious experiences, skills and knowledge developedon the course. The outcomes from the FMP form thestudents end of year show and their final assessment.Assessment and Feedback on students progress takesplace through out the course. Formative assessmenttakes place through either written and/or verbalfeedback during 1:1 and group tutorials, groupreviews, critiques, self and peer assessments.Summative assessment takes place at the end of eachunit of study and involves the presentation of a body ofwork. Written developmental feedback is provided foreach unit of study.Unit 1 and Unit 2 are graded Pass, Refer or Fail andstudents will need to Pass to progress to the next unit.Unit 4 is graded Distinction, Merit, Pass, Refer or Fail.Work submitted for assessment usually includes: abody of creative outcomes, supporting developmentalwork including sketchbooks, models, samples, tests orprototypes and a reflective journal. Sketchbooks wouldnormally contain evidence of contextual research,primary and secondary research relating to the projectthemes and evidence of ideas development andproblem solving.99

Progression and Universityof the Arts LondonThe Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at GBMET offers a close relationship with the University of the ArtsLondon (UAL). UAL will guarantee students on this course receive at least one offer for an undergraduateplace related to a students foundation specialism.University of the Arts London (UAL) offers anextensive range of courses in art, design, fashion,communication and performing arts. Living in BrightonThere are two Homestay options:Half boardThis option includes breakfast and dinner, providedby the host. Meal times can be a great opportunity topractice English. Students will be treated as a memberof the family and interact with the host on a daily basis.Self-cateredWe understand that accommodation is an importantpart of a student’s stay and that they should be happyand comfortable with whatever choice they make.All our accommodation is thoroughly checked andmonitored in accordance with the standards set out inthe British Council’s Accreditation UK Scheme. Wevisit all our hosts and aim to place our students in ahome that suits their preferences.Most accommodation options are located within 30minutes travel distance to the MET.This is a great option for students who want to takethe first steps towards independence but would stilllike the comfort of a homely environment.
