DELAWAREDELAWAREDelaware College of Art and Design:From Your Family to OursSmall classes, individual attention and a tightknit campus communityprepare you for a creative futureThe Delaware College of Art and Design is the Mid-Atlantic’s only two-year artand design college as well as Delaware’s only professional art and design school.Since its founding in 1997, DCAD has aimed to educate talented, dedicatedstudents to become art makers, idea generators, problem solvers and visualcommunicators.DCAD offers the associate of fine arts degree in five majors – animation, fine arts, graphic design, illustration and photography – with specialized studies withineach. The College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on HigherEducation and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design to allowstudents to earn AFA degrees and then matriculate as juniors into baccalaureateinstitutions across the United States and beyond. DCAD averages studentretention rates and graduation rates far beyond those of many two- and four-yearcolleges and universities. Why do DCAD students stay and thrive when they stART here? Because classesaverage just 10 to 15 students, and the learning environment is led by nurturingeducators – all working artists and designers themselves – who mentor studentsacademically, artistically and professionally.Because students initiate their own clubs andparticipate in a variety of activities, including fieldtrips to Philadelphia, New York and Washingtonand curating exhibitions for public view. Becausetuition costs significantly less than at many otherprivate art and design schools and qualifiedstudents procure paid work experience throughDCAD’s internship program. Because DCADenables students to take a financially smartapproach to their higher education while buildingtheir vision, skills, portfolios and confidence sothey may succeed at further studies and futurecareers. To create your future at the Delaware College ofArt and Design, visit www.dcad.edu, emailadmissions@dcad.edu or call (302) 622-8000.10Why DCAD?2015 Animation Graduate Teddy Newby ExplainsI was homeschooled from third grade onward, and I entered college the sameyear I graduated high school, 2013.DCAD was appealing to me for a number of reasons. As a homeschooler, Iliked the smaller size of the student body. For the most part, everyone youtake classes with will also live in the same dorm building as you. This kind offamiliarity is a good transitional step between always being around close familyand friends, and operating independently. The fact that DCAD is a two-yearprogram only serves to improve upon this transitional role. With this setup, youcan still get the experience of attending a large college after you graduate fromDCAD. Also worth noting is that DCAD understands how to handle homeschooltranscripts without acting like the student is a truant – which is always a plus!Everyone at DCAD was just great, particularly the administration. The deanknew all of the students by name and always wanted to make sure everythingwas going OK. And if you ever had a problem, it was good to know you wouldn’tgo more than an hour without bumping into the director of Student Affairs. Allof the offices are either on the first floor or mixed in with the classrooms. As astudent, I walked by them every day on my way to classes, so the entire facultyalways felt accessible and approachable. Most importantly, everyone at DCAD really cares about each individual student.I think it would be difficult to put into words just how valuable that is.11
