SCOPE conducts more than 70 3-year-old and 4-year-old pre-K classes in 17school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties. SCOPE pre-K prepares the children for the school district’s kindergartenprogram. SCOPE pre-K curriculum is aligned with NYS Next Generation Standards aswell as school district needs. SCOPE accommodates emergent multilingual language learners. 18thSCOPE Hosts Annual Awards DinnerCelebrating Those Who Shine Above the RestEducational leaders from 41 school districtsacross Long Island gathered at Villa Lombardi’sin Holbrook to honor and celebrate more than170 dedicated professionals during SCOPEEducation Services’ 18th annual School DistrictAwards Dinner, held on March 18. The evening’shonorees were chosen for recognition basedon their exemplary contributions to the field ofeducation and for embodying the night’s themeof “Shining Above the Rest” during the 20182019 school year.During his remarks, SCOPE Executive DirectorGeorge L. Duffy noted that there were 173individuals being recognized for their service toschools, communities and children. “Thanks for allyou do for the children of Long Island,” he said.The first awards of the evening werethe National School Development Council’sCooperative Leadership Award, received byPlainview-Old Bethpage Central School DistrictSuperintendent of Schools Dr. Lorna Lewis, andthe U.S. Army Leadership Award, received byNassau BOCES and staff. National School Development Council AwardAs a study council representing Nassau andSuffolk counties, SCOPE is a participating memberof the National School Development Council, anorganization comprised of various study councilslocated throughout the nation. The NSDC presents anannual award to acknowledge outstanding leadershipwithin the Council’s membership in recognition ofexemplary efforts to establish cooperative relationshipswith other educational agencies or study councils inthe course of creating educational programs for thenation’s schools. Previous award recipients include Mr.Cramer Harrington, deputy director for managementservices for SCOPE (posthumously); Ms. LorraineDeller, Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association,executive director; Dr. Charles T. Russo, East Morichessuperintendent of schools and past president of SCSSA;Ms. Susan Schnebel, Islip superintendent of schools andpast president of SCSSA, and Mr. Henry Grishman,superintendent of the Jericho School District and pastpresident of NCCSS.This year, this prestigious award was presentedto Dr. Lorna Lewis, member of the SCOPE Board ofDirectors, president of the New York State Council ofSchool Superintendents and superintendent of schoolsfor the Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD. Murillo began hereducational career as a teacher inthe New York City school systemserving as a second and thirdgrade general education teacher,a fourth grade special educationteacher and reading specialist,and as a second grade teacherat William Floyd ElementarySchool before serving in hercurrent position.
