Hundreds of thousands attended the event.Shortly after encouraging the United States to continue its "never-ending journey" to live up tothe ideals of its founders, on his way off the platform at the West Front of the Capitol,President Barack Obama stopped to view in the scene before him."I want to take a look one more time," he told those surrounding him. "I'm not going to seethis again."And so, with his oath of office taken -- again -- and the speech delivered, the presidentstood aside for 24 seconds on the chilly Monday afternoon, letting the crowd that had joinedhim for his formal, public second inauguration file past.Continues on page 4A“We Salute You, President Obama!”Photos from the Elite News - MLK Parade on Monday, January 21, 2013On Saturday, January 19, 2013, about 185 volunteers for the MLK Community Center helpedusher 112 groups that marched from Dallas City Hall to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to FairPark. There are fewnations in the world wherepeople of different backgrounds, ethnic origins, religious beliefs and politicalpersuasions have cometogether to build a greatDemocracy, one that isenvied across the globe. When I first went toCongress there were fiftyfive women in the House ofRepresentatives and sevenwomen in the United StatesSenate. Today, there areseventy-eight women in theHouse and twenty in theSenate. Most politicalobservers agree that ourgovernanceisbetterbecause of the new realitiesin Washington.Of course, there are thoseamong us who are weary ofdiversity. They must understand that it is not a burden, but a privilege.Ourstrength as a people isdirectly related to the tapestry of our culture. Historyhas taught us that thosewho stand in the way ofchange are swept away bythe gigantic wave thataccompanies progress. If you look at the professions and industries that areat the heart of our progressyou will find people whospeak various languages, who pray to different Godsand who hold numerouspolitical beliefs. We havelearned that progress doesnot demand that we allbelieve the same things. Itdoes require, however, thatwe are agreeable with oneanother even if we havemajor disagreements. In my years of public service I have been able toaccomplish many goals andobjectives. Many of themhave come about with thesupport of people who didnot look like me, who didnot believe what I believedand who were members of adifferent political party. We were able to workwith one another andunderstand our differencesbecause we respected eachother, and had a concernfor the larger good. As adiverse nation we can moveforward. I have alwaysbelieved that the larger ourcollective tent, the greaterthe opportunities for allpeople. Please comment by writing to joe.greenbishop@mail.house.govDALLAS ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO SALUTEEDUCATORS OF DELTA SIGMA THETASORORITY INCORPORATEDThe Dallas ISD Board ofTrustees will salute themembers of Delta SigmaTheta Sorority Incorporatedwho are current and retirededucators for the positiveimpact they have made onthe lives of Dallas ISD students, staff, faculty, parentsand families. Are yougoing through difficulttimes? Does it seem as if theworld is falling down aroundyou? Do you feel like you areunable to go on? Know this,my brother and sister, if youare able to continue to pressforward and onward, thelight will begin to shinethrough at the end of thatlong and dark tunnel thatyou might be in.Call out to God! He willhear your cries. He willspeak to your heart aboutyour situation. But sometimes we are so busy complaining about our circumstances that we are unableto hear His soft still voicespeaking to us. Are you thatperson? I know I have been.First, you want to stop com-plaining. Find somethingthat you can thank the Lordfor about your situation. Itdoes not matter if it is verysmall, but thank Him. As youare going through your situation, realize also that it willnot last. Your change iscoming.God says that when weare able to stand the test,we will receive the crown oflife that He has promised us.However, that promisecomes with another part. The crown will come forpeople who love God. Doyou love the Father? Thinkabout that for a moment. When you are able toanswer that, then you knowwhat else you may need todo in order to continue topersevere and still believeGod and press through yoursituation. We all have trials andtribulations. We have toknow that when we surrender our situation to God andpersevere, He is there tocatch us before we fall. Youwill not fall, my brother andsister. You have to stand andstand firm in Christ Jesus. Can you release your anger, hurt, and pain to Him? Canyou stand in His love? Areyou ready to love Him? Iknow I am. Amen? Amen.Hands off Malia and Sasha ObamaBy George E. CurryNNPA ColumnistJust when you think leaders of the National RifleAssociation can’t stoop anylower, they keep managing toplunge even deeper. Thistime, they have strayed wayover the line of respectabilityby using Malia and Sasha’senrollment in Sidwell Friends,a private Quaker school, tomalign President Obama overhis proposal to place limits onthe sale of assault rifles andexpand background checks.“Are the president’s kidsmore important than yours? Then why is he skepticalabout putting armed securityin our schools when his kidsare protected by armedguards at their school? Mr.Obama demands the wealthypay their fair share of taxes. But he’s just another elitisthypocrite when it comes to afair share of security.Protection for their kids. Andgun-free zones for ours.”WhiteHousePressSecretary Jay Carney was correct when he said in a statement:“Most Americansagree that a president’s children should not be used aspawns in a political fight. Butto go so far as to make thesafety of the president’s children the subject of an attackad is repugnant and cowardly.”New Jersey Gov. ChrisChristie, a Republican, said:“To talk about the president’s children or any publicofficer’s children who have –not by their own choice, butby requirement – to haveprotection and use thatsomehow to make a politicalpoint I think is reprehensible.”I am tempted to call NRAExecutive Vice PresidentWayne LaPierre and his comrades scum. But I’m going toresist the temptation. Notbecause they don’t fit thatdescription. I’m restrainingmyself because to call themscum would be an insult toscum.A second NRA ad, runningfour-and-a-half-minutes,tossed in an image of NBCnewsman David Gregory –whose children also attendSidwell Friends School – forgood measure. The narratorin the ad says “Armed Guards— Good enough for theDavid Gregory’s kids’ school, not for the rest of us. [The]school Obama’s daughtersattend has 11 armed guards.”Not surprisingly, the adconveniently ignores the factthat the Secret Service isrequired to protect the president’s children. They protected Chelsea Clinton and JulieNixon when they attendedthe school, known as “theHarvard of Washington’s private schools.”Although the original NRAad leaves the impression thatit is referring to SecretService agents, the longerversion makes it clear thatNRA is referencing securityguards at the school, whichhas a lower school campus inBethesda, Md. and middleand upper schools in northwest Washington, D.C.The Washington Post’sFact Checker column awarded the NRA ad fourPinocchios, representing a“whopper” of a lie. Thenewspaper noted, “ theonline directory for SidwellFriends lists 11 people asworking in the SecurityDepartment. Five are listedas ‘special police officer,’while two are listed as ‘on callspecial police officer,’ whichpresumably means they donot work full-time. The directory also lists two weekendshift supervisors, one security officer and the chief ofsecurity.““ But we spoke to parents who said they had neverseen a guard on campus witha weapon. And Ellis Turner, associate head of SidwellFriends, told us emphatically:‘Sidwell Friends security officers do not carry guns.’”The NRA’s ad claiming thatPresident Obama is “skepticalabout putting armed securityin our schools” misrepresentshis position. The clip wastaken out of context from thisexchange between the president and David Gregory onNBC’s “Meet the Press.”GREGORY: Should we havean armed guard at everyschool in the country? That’swhat the NRA believes. Theytold me last week that thatcould work.OBAMA: I’m not going toprejudge the recommendations that are given to me. Iam skeptical that the onlyanswer is putting more gunsin schools. And I think thevast majority of the Americanpeople are skeptical that thatsomehow is going to solveour problem.Clearly, the president didnot say he was skepticalabout placing armed securityguards in schools. Instead, hesaid that is not “the onlyanswer.”Even more insane, at apress conference, WayneLaPierre of the NRA assertedthat the answer to preventing future incidents like theoneatSandyHookElementarySchoolinNewtown, Conn. is the placement of armed guards inevery school.Among the proposals presented by President Obama isproviding federal funds toplace more officers inschools, if the schoolrequests them. After acting on a specificproposal made by NRA, thegun lobbying organizationdenounced Obama yet again. After coming under attack byeven some conservatives,NRA spokesman AndrewArulanandam said: “If anyonethinks we’re talking specifically about someone’s children, they’re missing thepoint completely ”No, that’sexactly the point. Leave thosebeautiful Obama girls out ofyour degenerate ad campaigns.George E. It is no longer surprising that so many people areafraid to commit, have nodesire to commit and/or do noteven consider whether or notthey should commit. As we embark upon a brandNew Year, this is a good time tobegin to reflect upon your ownlevel of commitment and whatyou must do in order to teachyour son the importance ofcommitment. How many teachers and parents have stunted a boy'spotential by telling him what hecouldn't do? Commit to refusing to believe a word of it! Ihave had numerous successfulBlack men share with me negative comments from theirteachers: you aren't universitymaterial; from parents: younever were strong in math;from other influential adults:you shouldn't take the collegetract - regarding their ability tosucceed. If these men hadbelieved these negative people, they would not have achievedsuccess in life. So teach yourson to commit to not allowingsomeone else's negativity to bethe reason for his failure.Guide your son to becominga positive person; to finding thegood and praising it.Instill the idea within yourson's psyche that he canachieve anything that he is willing to committing to workinghard enough to accomplish. Lethim know that there are manynegative people in this world, and there are also many positive people, and that he gets tochoose the people with whomhe desires to spend his freetime.Following are suggestionswhich can help you achieveyour goal of encouraging yourson to believe in himself, in hisability to achieve and in committing to being a positive person: Commit to being a positiverole model. Set small goals and gradually increase the challenges asyou gain confidence. Teach your child to do thesame. Celebrate small victories. Congratulate yourself andyour son when expectationsare surpassed. Commit to seeing the positive in people and in situationsrather than the negative. Make sure that the mediayou and your child watchshares more positives than negatives. Commit to making a conscious effort not to be a negative person and to limit negativity in your son's environment. Make it clear to your sonthat you expect him to be apositive person! Commit to being positiveyourself and strive to help yourson see the positive. Teach that people who arecommitted to looking for thepositive in situations will usually find it.Page 3ABOARD OF DIRECTORSDr. Mary E. Beck, ChairpersonDr. T.R. Lee, Jr.Mrs. Dorothy LeeAtty.
