July 10, 2022 Visitation Catholic Church The History of the Papacy Article 40 By Matt Pozen Director of Faith Formation Last week we traced the beginnings of the “High Middle Ages” in the 12th century, when western Europesaw the revival of its cities, the founding of the first universities, the development of “scholastic”theology at these universities, the building of magnificent gothic cathedrals, and the establishment ofurban religious orders by St. Dominic (d. 1221) and St. Francis of Assisi (d. 1226). The popes of thetime played a key role in this cultural and ecclesiastical revival, as can be seen in the life and career ofPope Innocent III (1198 1216), who is often considered the greatest of the medieval popes. Innocent was born in 1160 as Lotario di Segni, into a wealthy Roman family. He studied theology at theuniversity of Paris and canon law at the university of Bologna, and in 1190 was made a cardinal (at theage of 30) by his uncle, pope Clement III. In the conclave of 1198 he was unanimously elected as pope,at the age of 37. He took the name Innocent III, and the next day was ordained as a priest and thenbishop. With his family connections in Rome, his first rate education, and his strong and insightful character, he was a manborn to rule. He immediately set about reorganizing the Papal States of central Italy and streamlining the papal curia (thegroup of cardinals who lead the various branches of the papal administration). Innocent was supremely aware of the prestige of his office as pope, and he was the first to use the title “Vicar of Christ” in aconsistent way (as opposed to the more traditional title of “Vicar of Peter”). He and his successors thus saw themselves asmore than the living voice of Peter, but rather the living voice of Christ, mediators between God and mortals. Like hispredecessors he got involved in the complicated politics of the Holy Roman Empire (Germany), excommunicating emperorOtto IV and backing Otto’s young son Frederick II. In England the barons had extracted from king John his signing of theMagna Carta, a key step in establishing a constitutional, rather than absolute, monarchy. Pope Innocent declared the MagnaCarta void because the barons had issued it without papal consent. Innocent’s biggest debacle on the international scene was his launching of the 4th Crusade in 1202 to recover the Holy Landfrom Muslim control. Bribed by a contender for the Byzantine imperial throne, the crusaders never even made it toPalestine. Instead, they were diverted to Constantinople, where they sacked the city in 1204, stole many religious relicsfrom the churches, and installed a Latin patriarch. Though Innocent condemned this change of mission, he eventually saw init an opportunity to bring the Byzantines back into communion with Rome. The Orthodox were enraged by this latestexample of a Latin power grab, and to this day they remain suspicious of Catholic attempts at reuniting the churches. On the doctrinal and pastoral front, Innocent’s greatest success was organizing the ecumenical council of Lateran IV in1215. Bishops from all across the western Church gathered in Rome for this council, but they were actually outnumbered byrepresentatives of the universities and the civic authorities. Equipped with the scholastic theology developed at theuniversities, the council tried to clarify the doctrine of the real presence of Christ in the eucharist by using the language of“transubstantiation”; ie. in the Mass the inner “substance” (essence) of the bread and wine is changed into the body & bloodof Christ while the visible “accidents” remain the same. The council also required all adult Christians to confess their sins toa priest and receive communionat least once a year (during the Easter season.) This “Easter duty” reveals that from theMiddle Ages (up to the 20th century), the Catholic faithful attended Mass regularly but received communion rarely. Pope Innocent was also concerned about stamping out heresy in the Church, especially the Albigensian (or Cathar) versionin southern France. Put off by the wealth and worldly power of the clergy, the Albigensians developed a dualistic mindsetthat saw the material world as evil in itself. Fortunately, at this time a devout priest in Spain named Dominic de Guzmanwas establishing a new religious community focused on education, preaching, and simplicity of life. Innocent drafted these“Dominicans” into refuting the errors of the Albigensians and better catechizing the faithful. (Later on the Dominicanswould become the leaders of the papal inquisition established by Innocent’s nephew, pope Gregory IX). When Innocent’sown legate to southern France was murdered by Albigensian radicals, the pope declared a crusade against the heretics whichquickly turned bloody and cast a pall over the whole mission. Pope Innocent also supported the witness of St. Francis of Assisi and his new religious community of “friars” (brothers): theFranciscans. He once had a dream in which a little man was holding up the corner of a crumbling St. John Lateran Basilica(the cathedral of Rome). The pope interpreted the little man as St. Francis, who would save a worldly and crumbling Churchthrough his simple life and joyful preaching. Pope Innocent died in 1216, and his reign at the beginning of the 13th centurymarked the highpoint of the medieval papacy. Next week we will tell the story of Pope Boniface VIII’s reign at the end ofthe century (1294 1303), which led to a period of sharp papal decline in the 14th century.
