September Spotlight.Bruno Tropeano FINALLY– After 50 Years. Some five months later, I came across a beautifully maintainedFury on consignment to a company in Seattle, Washington. As itturned out, my part time job gave me the opportunity to drive toWashington at no expense to me. Since the car was priced right andI was even earning money while driving out there, I couldn’t wait toget there. As luck would have it, the Fury was sold for the full asking price two days before I got there. Depressing, to say the least. Ifound the buyer and spent some time with him while sharing myfrustration. To say the least, the drive back to Alabama was notpleasant.Destiny was to play a part in my search. My youngest brotherspotted a 56 Fury for sale on Ebay. I bid vigorously but lost the bidby 200. The highest bid had not met the reserve, however, and thecar was not sold. While the bidding was taking place, my son hadcontacted the seller and talked to him about my history with theFury and how long I had been looking for one.So before the Fury was again listed on Ebay, I called the sellerand negotiated a purchase. It could not have worked out better. Thecar was everything I expected and more. – fully drivable, clean, lowmileage, fender skirts and six of the unique hub caps as well asbooks, manuals, manufacturers build sheet and miscellaneous parts.I was elated. Along with my two brothers, we drove to Virginia andloaded the Fury onto a trailer for the trip home. That too was interesting. At every food or fuel stop, we were asked what the carwas. So many people had never seen this model car and few evencame close to guessing correctly. The car is now a cruiser for goodweather only, but has already participated in its first Christmas parade. Happier, I could not be as I again revisit part of my youngerdays.Back when I did not realize the value of having a fairly uniquecar, I had a 1956 Plymouth Fury. For those who do not know of thecar, it was Plymouths first foray into the hotrod market. FollowingHenry Ford’s early philosophy, you could buy the car as long asyou wanted it in white. No other colors were available. And theoptions list was limited to a hardtop or a convertible, stick shift orautomatic, and a choice between one or two four-barrel carburetors.Production was limited to about 4500 units. I was lucky to haveone of the sticks.Being young and foolish at the time, I had mine painted a Honduras Maroon, which caused the anodized gold side airplane profilestripes to really jump off the car. And I drag raced it for manyyears. Although many of my friends said you could not make thisMOPAR run, after a slight bore job and balancing and blueprintingthe engine, I never lost to a Chevy or a Ford in any of my races.(Unfortunately for me, Pontiac had a larger cube engine in my classand consistently beat me.)Those college days were great, studying all week and racing allweekend. Even when I had to replace the transmission thirteentimes in one year, due to Plymouth using the same one since about1939, it did not bother me. After all, the trannys could be boughtcheaply at most wrecking yards – who else would want one.Marriage and family soon took priority over the car and racing. The car was sold and drag racing became history. Now, over fiftyyears later, with a grown family and some spare assets, I started asearch for another Fury. It has been a bumpy and frustratingsearch. My first hope was with a guy in California who, in 2013, had twoFury’s. One of the two was in parts and the other had some inherentproblems. Although the price was reasonable for one of them, Iwas not enthused about traveling to California from Alabama andthen being disappointed. I passed on the opportunity.Bruno’s 56 Fury is loaded withfactory options: Power Steering,Power Brakes, Dual Antennas,Power Windows, Power BenchSeat, and Dealer Installed AirConditioning.4

Club Member: Bob FeldMy dad put me to work at an early age in his Gulf Oil servicestation. I quickly learned that I had a knack at repairing automobilesand enjoyed it as well. I began drag racing at age 16 (Helena/Lassiter mtn.) until I left for Auburn University.I went to work for U.S. Steel in Fairfield and joined SCCA/Birmingham Region. I autocrossed in a bug-eyed sprite until Ijoined IMSA and then went to driver’s school at Talladega Superspeedway. I raced a 2002 BMW in the BF Goodrich Radial Challenge. Later I moved up to Kelley American series in a AMC Concord and then to a V8 Camaro. I went to a dirt track race at Talladega Short Track and LOVED IT. I raced VW, Chevy, and Novaopen wheel modified at different local dirt tracks within 100 miles.I lost my wife to ALS and raised my two sons. Now, twentyyears later, I am reconnecting with old friends and making newones through old hot rod cars. I am too old to race again but I stillenjoy repairing these antiques. I currently have a 32 Ford Roadster,35 Chevy, and a 1970 Malibu Convertible and I am always looking forward to the next one whatever it may be.5
