E-Class Evaporatively-Cooled ChillersThe E-Class of chillers is Smardt’s evaporatively-cooled chiller that utilize Smardt’s oil-free chiller technologywith Turbocor’s TTS compressors and R134a refrigerant. Theseadvantages are the hallmark of Smardtchillers.Oil-Free OperationSmardt oil-free centrifugal chillers usemagnetic bearings and a variablespeed drive to deliver IPLV efficienciesthat far surpass those of conventionaloil-lubricated centrifugal, reciprocating,scroll and screw chillers.Smardt utilizes totally oil-free Turbocorcompressor technology, achievingthe highest part-load efficiencies forour chillers and chilled water systems(including water-, air- and evaporativelycooled applications).Proprietary magnetic bearings replaceconventional oil-lubricated bearings.This eliminates the high friction losses,mechanical wear, and the highermaintenance oil management systemsthat are inherent with conventionalcompressor designs.E-Class evaporatively-cooled chillersTurbocor’s primary moving part (therotor shaft and impellers) is levitatedduring rotation by a digitally controlledmagnetic bearing system. E-Class Evaporatively-Cooled Chillersthat are close to the ambient temperature.This is extremely beneficial in both hightemperature chilled water applications orin seasonal operation when the ambienttemperature is similar to the designchilled water conditions.Smardt Restart ensures that in theevent of a power failure, your Smardtchiller is back on line as quickly as20 seconds. Chilled water supply forcritical applications is not impacted byintermettent power loss, eliminating theneed for additional thermal storage. Cross-fluted evaporativepads are situated on the outside of thecoils. Separated from the coil surface,these pads are designed to be saturatedwith treated water, and the pads alsoprovide protection for the coils. Air drawnthrough the wetted pads is precooledapproximately 20-25 degrees beforecoming in contact with the coil surface,making the E-Class about 20% moreefficient than an air-cooled chiller at fullload.But as with cooling towers, Smardt’sE-Class chiller does require watertreatment.Turbocor TTS CompressorE-Class chillers can be equipped withTurbocor TTS oil-free compressors.Turbocor TTS compressors boastoutstanding full-load efficiencies. VFDsare built-in, and drives are external to themachine, cooled primarily by air. The E-Class chiller will onlyactivate its evaporative system whenneeded. During low ambient conditions,its condenser automatically switches offthis evaporative system.
