ISHR XXI World Congress June 30, 2013 – July 4, 2013 San Diego, Californiawww.ishr2013.comWelcome from the ISHR PresidentDear Colleagues,It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome all of the colleagues to the XXI World Congress of the ISHR in SanDiego. The World Congress which meets every three years is a good opportunity for our colleagues from sevensections all over the world to get together and discuss the recent progress in the cardiovascular research. The XXIWorld Congress is effectively organized by Professors Joan Heller Brown and Yibin Wang and their colleagues, atone of the most beautiful sites in the world, San Diego. The program is composed of the exciting symposia, Awardand keynote lectures in which cutting edge science will be discussed. For young researchers, Richard Bing Young Investigator Award competition and early career investigator (ECI)program are provided as well as the poster presentation. Meeting with face-to-face discussion is the shortest wayfor treasure hunting and friendship making. As a president of the ISHR, I cordially invite all of the colleagues toparticipate in this exciting World Congress in San Diego. Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Joan, Yibin and Rick Moss (program committee chair) for theirdevoted contributions in organizing the Congress, looking forward to a great success.Dr. Masatsugu HoriPresident ISHR 2010-2013ISHR XX World Congress ChairPresident, Osaka Medical Center for Cancer andCardiovascular DiseasesProfessor-emeritus, Osaka UniversitySchool of Medicine, Osaka, Japan5

ISHR XXI World Congress June 30, 2013 – July 4, 2013 San Diego, Californiawww.ishr2013.comWelcome from the Scientific Program Committee ChairWelcome to the 2013 World Congress of the International Society for Heart Research! The ISHR is among theleading societies internationally dedicated to understanding the mechanisms of inherited and acquired diseases ofthe heart and cardiovascular system, with the ultimate goal of improving clinical approaches to treatment andprevention of disease. This year’s World Congress promises to deliver reports of substantive progress in ourunderstanding of the determinants of cardiac health and disease. Nearly 180 speakers from all seven of ourregional sections will make oral presentations addressing the primary themes of the meeting: Emerging Concepts of Cardiac Regulation: Beyond the GenomeIon Channel Mechanisms and Therapeutic Targets for Arrhythmias CardioprotectionNew Insights into Cardiac DysfunctionNew Mechanisms of Cardioprotection and InjuryRegenerative Medicine for Heart DiseasesSignaling in Cardiac Disease and TherapyTranslation from Cardiac Research to TherapiesThe Scientific Program Committee in collaboration with the Local Organizing Committee has drafted a schedule of40 symposia that ensures that these themes are carried through the three and a half days of the Congress. Thescientific program notably features participation by investigators at early career stages: a half-day pre-Congresssession involving presentations by Early Career Investigators, symposium presentations by faculty at ranksequivalent to assistant professor, and co-chairing of all the symposia that comprise the meeting. The schedule hasbeen tailored to ensure that poster sessions occur during “prime time” each day. The outstanding poster fromeach of the three sessions selected by the judges will be recognized by a poster prize to the primary author. On behalf of the ISHR, I extend deepest appreciation to the Scientific Program Committee and the Local OrganizingCommittee for their thoughtful and dedicated work in bringing this World Congress to fruition. I especially thankJoan Heller Brown and Yibin Wang, Chair and Co-Chair of the Local Organizing Committee for their initiative inhosting this meeting in San Diego, for their leadership in planning meeting logistics, and for their relentless pursuitof excellence in organizing the meeting. The work involved in this undertaking is demanding and can at times beconsuming, but through it all, Joan and Yibin and their organizing committee have worked tirelessly to ensure thatthis World Congress is compelling and memorable. To reap the full benefit of the World Congress, I encourage youto take part in the General Assembly and all social activities as a means to learn more about the missions of theISHR and to meet ISHR colleagues from around the globe. On behalf of the Scientific Program Committee and the Local Organizing Committee, I wish you a very successfulmeeting! Thank you for your commitment to the missions and programs of the ISHR.Richard L. Moss, PhDSecretary General, ISHRChair, Scientific Program Committee6

ISHR XXI World Congress June 30, 2013 – July 4, 2013 San Diego, Californiawww.ishr2013.comWelcome from the XXI World Congress Program Chair and Co-ChairDear Friends and Colleagues,It is with great pleasure and anticipation that we welcome you to the XXI ISHR World Congress in San Diego.Cardiovascular research is undergoing breath-taking progress with tremendous advances in traditional andemerging new disciplines. The symposia developed and sponsored by the International Program Committee andISHR Sections, complemented by those conceived and funded locally, encompass a remarkably broad and timelyrange of topics. Most important is the outstanding line up of invited speakers and stellar Award recipient lecturesto be given by scientists at the forefront of our field. At this year’s Congress we have also made a special effort topromote and recognize the successes of our Early Career Investigators (ECIs) as part of the central mission of theISHR. In addition to the pre-Congress ECI Workshop there is an ISHR International Poster Award Competition andthe prestigious Richard J. Bing Young Investigator Competition; also we have incorporated 18 short talks in the finalsymposia specifically selected from junior investigators based on their submitted abstracts, and offered symposiachair opportunities to many other early career investigators. The Marriott Hotel and Marina have been highly accommodating as their needs and ours have changed since thetime of our original planning more than 5 years ago, and the San Diego Convention Center should provide aluxurious amount of space to meet formally and informally while enjoying the spectacular harbor views andSouthern California breezes. We sincerely thank our sponsors and exhibitors, in particular those who have beenunexpectedly generous with their support which has been essential to the realization of this meeting. The staff atStrategic Results has been incredible, in particular Jackie Burkhardt who has been there to help with absolutelyeverything, including volunteering to do all the worrying for me, and has always kept her optimism andcomposure. Finally, without the sage advice and stewardship of Rick Moss and Tish Murphy we would have beenoverwhelmed with all of the arrangements and decisions to be made.We hope the Congress will be a memorable experience for each of you, and expect that the fine weather, unequaled collegiality, and exciting science will drive collaborations and advance our field from bench to bedsideand beyond. Thank you all for being an important part of this event and we hope you enjoy the congress and yourvisit in San Diego. With warm wishes,Joan Heller Brown, PhD, ChairDistinguished Professor and ChairDepartment of PharmacologyUniversity of California, San DiegoYibin Wang, PhD, Co-ChairProfessor of Molecular MedicineDepartments of Anesthesiology, Physiology and MedicineDavid Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA7
