1111WESLEYAN COLLEGESummer 1986The Campaign for Advancement Reaches 5.5 MillionKnight Foundation Commits 150,000The Knight Foundation has pledgedits support to the Campaign for Advancement with a grant of 150,000,bringing the campaign total to 5,486,289 as of June 16, 1986. Thistotal includes over 4.2 million or morethan two-thirds of the 6.3 million goalfor capital campaign projects. Over 1.2 million toward the three-year Annual Fund goal has been pledged,bringing the Annual Fund very closeto 50% of its 2.5 million goal. TheCampaign and Annual Fund goals total 8.8 million.The Knight Foundation, incorporated in 1950, was established for"charitable, religious, scientific,literary, general educational andphilanthropic purposes." Porter Fund Makes Second Pledge Toward Porter Gymnasium RenovationA recent grant from the James HydeJames Hyde Porter established himself Conferences of the United MethodistPorter Fund brings the total pledged by the in the history of Wesleyan as one of its Church. Tull Foundation of Atlan- will enable Wesleyan to offer its students technologically advanced society .ta, making the Tull Foundation the second the modern facilities and equipment thatDfoundation to join in support of the 2million renovation of the Robert JenksTaylor Hall for Science and Mathematics.The renovation began on May 1 with theremoval of the old tabletops from theworkbenches in the laboratories . By thetime fall semester classes begin, TaylorHall will have updated laboratories, a newfire escape on the east end of the buildingand new restrooms upstairs. There will benew laboratory plumbing, the blackboardswill be resealed, and the behavorial sciencelab will have new furniture. The chemicalstorage area will be moved downstairs, andthe lecture rooms will be refurbished withnew lecterns and audio-visual materials.Phase II, scheduled to begin on May 1,1987, includes plans for an elevator, acompletely new air handling system and a Maintenance personnel sand the chemistry workbenches in Taylor Hall. The laboratories will be modernizedby the stan of fall semester.microcomputer room.

We expect that the program will be inplace in the spring of 1987," said Deanof the College Kayron McMinn.The program bears the name of oneof Wesleyan 's most devoted friends andbenefactors, the late D. AbbottTurner. An accomplished administratorand businessman whose interests, influence and benefactions extendedthroughout the south , Mr. Turner servedon the Wesleyan board of tru stees for18 years.A member of a fam ily long dedicatedto Wesleyan , Mr. Turner was the greatgrandson of Bishop George FosterPierce , great lead er of Methodism andfirst president of Wesleyan. His grandmother, Ella Pierce Turner, was afounder of the Adelphean Society atWesleyan, and his wife, ElizabethBradley Turner , was awarded anhonorary degree from Wesleyan.
