From the Desk Of Fr. JohnLent has begun. This is a solemn and HolySeason preparing to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries of Christ His Passion-Death, Resurrection, Ascension and the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Itis a time of renewal and deeper conversion ofour personal and community life. We come forward at the beginning of this Holy Season toacknowledge our sinfulness and our resolve torepent as we receive blessed ashes on ourforeheads and hear the words ‘Repent, andbelieve in the Gospel.’The Gospel for Ash Wednesday is always thesame it comes from the Gospel of St. Matthew.Jesus is pointing out to His disciples and thecrowds what to do and what not to do whenit comes to religious practices that can help orhinder our faith life. Jesus centers on three prayer fasting and almsgiving. Jesus begins abrief explanation of each of these by saying ‘When you pray When you fast When yougive alms.’ So the point is that these things aregood and are to be directed toward God. However, they can be self-serving or aimed at drawingattention to oneself getting recognition fromothers. That means that they are not servingGod but ourselves and that is what not to do.these same works of love for others. The Sermon on the Mount is a very familiarphrase referring to Jesus’ teaching the disciplesand those gathered around Him. It is made up ofthree main sections and those sections may befurther divided like the Gospel passages weheard last week and the week previous. Thissection deals with ‘antitheses’ in fact there aresix of them. Last week the Gospel dealt with onlytwo but both are central to the Christian Gospelmessage. The first of these two ‘antitheses’ dealt with retaliation or really how the Christian discipleshould respond to aggressive behavior. Originally, the ‘law’ or simple rule of ‘an eye for an eye’was to limit violence and angered revenge tokeep it all within certain boundaries. Jesus is advocating general kindness, forbearance, generosity and a open attitude toward people. The second is much more demanding ’But I sayto you love your enemies.’ Jesus refers to theFather who loves all and lets His love fall uponthem like rain without prejudice as to who isgood or not. We are called to love as the Fatherloves ’So be perfect as your Father is perfect.’The First Sunday of Lent always takes usinto the desert with Jesus. It is there that Jesus istempted by the Devil. It is a victory over Satan and a ‘mandate’ that ‘we all enter with Christ intothe fight against evil.’ Therefore, during this HolySeason of Lent we are all called to undergo adeeper conversion seeing the true effects ofsin and renewing our commitment to Christ.Congratulations to all of those who receivedThis prepares us for the renewal of our Baptismalthe Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy EuPromises at Easter by first renouncing sin charist this past Sunday. These are gifts toevil and Satan. Then we make a clear confesenrich these young children and our youth in livsion of our faith and ask the grace to remaining out of their faith and witnessing that faith tofaithful as true children of God and members ofothers. We all are to be a part of their continuedHis household.growth in the ways of Christ and their living faithLent with special devotions Stations of thein the community of the Church.Cross – Wednesday evening 7 pm Thursday –We all need to encourage these young men andAdoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benewomen with our example. We need to see themdiction – 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm.at our weekly gatherings for Eucharist on Sundays. We need to witness to them the sacrificesof love that serve others and invite them to shareLet us make Lent a holy time of growing asChristians in a spirit of true generosity withour time in prayer with our sacrifices of denyingourselves and really giving of ourselves to others in whatever way they may need. Let us bepositive and see positive growth in our spirituallives.
