40YEARSOFPRIDE1977Kenya Airways is established in January following the breakup of the East African Community andsubsequent disbanding of the jointly-owned East African Airways.1986The Government makes the first move towards privatization by publishing the Sessional Paper No.1 of1986 on ‘Economic Management for Renewed Growth’. The document for the first time, spells out theGovernment’s intention to divest from corporations which could be run better by the private sector.1991A policy paper on Public Enterprise Reform and Privatization setting out policy objectives is issuedin July. The policy paper gives high priority to the privatization of Kenya Airways.1992A new board is appointed at Kenya Airways in April under the chairmanship of Mr. Philip Ndegwawith a mandate to commercialize and prepare the airline for privatization.

KENYA AIRWAYS PLC (FORMERLY KENYA AIRWAYS LIMITED)BOARD OF DIRECTORS’PROFILESMichael JosephNon-Executive Chairman (71 Years)Michael Joseph joined the Board of Kenya Airways on29th September, 2016.Michael serves as a Non-Executive Director on the Boards ofVodacom Group South Africa, Vodacom Tanzania, VodacomMozambique and Safaricom Limited. Michael is currentlyemployed by Vodafone Group Services Limited as the Directorof Mobile Money and is responsible for leading the strategicgrowth and development of the successful M-PESA propositionacross the Vodafone footprint.Michael was one of the first World Bank Fellows, appointedin March 2011 to advise Governments, Regulators and otherinstitutions on Mobile Money and other ICT initiatives.Michael’s most recent appointment in April 2017 isNon-Executive Director of MFS Africa, a leading Pan-Africanfintech company. Previously, Michael was the foundingCEO of Safaricom Limited, steering the company from asubscriber base of less than 18,000 in 2000, to over 17 millionsubscribers at his retirement in November 2010, making it themost successful company in East Africa. This phenomenalgrowth straddling nearly a decade was notable for the launchof many innovative products and services and he was behindthe launch of the highly successful and phenomenal growth ofM-PESA and its related services. He has extensive internationalexperience in company start-ups, the implementation andoperation of large wireless and wire-line networks.Sebastian MikoszGroup Managing Director & CEO (44 Years)Sebastian Mikosz joined the Board of Kenya Airways on1st June, 2017. He replaces Mbuvi Ngunze who resigned on31 May, 2017.Sebastian is a graduate of the Institute of Political Studies(IEP Paris) in France with a Master’s degree in economics andfinance. He has over 20 years professional and internationalexperience in executive management, both in the private andpublic sector. Sebastian has also held various non-executiveroles as Supervisory Board member. Prior to joining KenyaAirways in June 2017, Sebastian was the CEO of eSky.pl,the leading Central European Online Travel Agent which isspecialised in e-distribution of travel products, currentlyoperating in 15 countries worldwide and owns a proprietarytechnology, including mobile distribution.Sebastian is also the former President and Chief ExecutiveOfficer of LOT Polish Airlines. LOT as the national carrier ofPoland has 88 years of history and is one of the oldest airlinesin the world. He held the position of CEO of LOT twice andis credited with conducting an in depth turnaround of thecompany leading to it first positive results in many years. Hewas the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of LOT’s regionaloperator EuroLOT, operating Bombardier Q400 aircrafts andhe was member of the Supervisory Boards of LOT AMS (theMRO base), WRO-LOT (regional handling company) as well asEurobank (retail bank, part of SG Group).Sebastian started his career in 1997 with Arthur Andersenoffice in Paris, where he specialised in investments in emerging10markets. After returning to Poland in 2000, he worked onestablishing the first independent online brokerage housein Poland. A year later, he became the Managing Director ofthe French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Poland(CCIFP). Between July 2003 – September 2006 he wasVice-President of the Polish Information and Foreign InvestmentAgency (PAIiIZ). As a governmental agency, PAIiIZ was incharge of attracting foreign investors to Poland and focus onthe economic promotion of Poland. Between 2007 to 2009, heheld the position of Director in Deloitte Business ConsultingWarsaw Office. He was responsible for developing the businessconsulting for the public sector together with supporting theinflow and development of foreign investors in Poland.Ron Kornelis Adriaan SchipperNon-Executive Director (71 Years)Ron Schipper started his career in aviation in 1969 by joiningKLM as a cabin attendant. He flew for three years and wasthen transferred to cabin crew management where he workedin various management positions until 1979. He left theNetherlands in 1980 for his first posting as Manager CabinCrew seconded to Nigeria Airways in Lagos. In 1982, he wasappointed Sales Manager Kenya based in Nairobi after whichhe was transferred to the UK in 1984 as District Manager-Northern England based in Manchester.In 1986, Ron was appointed as General Manager-Ghana andin 1989, he spent a brief period in France as interim GeneralManager-France based in Paris before returning to theNetherlands to take up the appointment of Executive Secretaryof the Passenger Division. In 1991, he was seconded to AntilleanAirlines in Curacao as Managing Director. In 1994, Ron wasappointed as VP Africa based in Johannesburg and in 2004the Near East was added to his area of responsibility.Ron retired from KLM in 2008. During his period asVP-Africa, he has been instrumental in the process to link KLMto Kenya Airways which he considers as one of the milestonein his career. Ron has served as Chairman of the Board of theChamber of Commerce South Africa and the Netherlands, ismember of the staff and remuneration committee of the KQBoard, is Board Member of Precision Air and serves as BoardMember of AviAssist, a Dutch foundation with focus on AfricanAviation Safety.Dr. Kamau ThuggeNon-Executive Director (60 Years)Dr. Kamau Thugge was the Principal Secretary, NationalTreasury, 2013. He previously worked as a Senior EconomicAdvisor in the Ministry of Finance from 2010 to 2013. Beforethat, he was the Deputy Division Chief, International MonetaryFund from 2008 to 2010 and the Economic Secretary andHead of Economic Affairs Department, Treasury (Kenya) from2005 to 2008. He also previously held the positions of Headof Fiscal and Monetary Affairs Department, Treasury (Kenya)from 2004 to 2005 and Economist/Senior Economist, IMFfrom 1985 to 2004. He represents the Permanent Secretary,Finance on the Boards of the Central Bank of Kenya, theMonetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Kenya, theKenya Revenue Authority and the Capital Markets Authorities.

She started her career as a management traineewith ABN AMRO Bank and worked hard to rise through theranks to become a senior executive in the banking industry.During her career, she has had the benefit of managing a teamof over 400 people and a team spanning five countries withinthe region. Her skills as both a leader and a strategic thinkerwere able to translate broad concepts into specific actionsenabling her to perform her current role as the Director,Strategic Projects at the Housing Finance Group of Companieswhere she is responsible for the implementation of high impactprojects that enable the achievement of business strategy.Voted as one of Kenya’s Top 40 Women under 40, sheserves as a Non-Executive Director on the Housing FinanceFoundation Board whose key project is the creation of anArmy of 1 million Artisans, a Vision 2030 flagship project. Shealso served as the Vice-Chairperson on Kenya’s Mining TaskForce that was responsible for reviewing all licences issuedwithin the industry and determining their validity as well asproviding recommendations for the country’s national miningpolicy. During her lengthy and broad career, which has alsoseen her work at Citibank N.A. and Barclays Bank, she hasacquired certain critical skills that include strategic thinking,cross-functional leadership, people and talent managementand growth, quality management and an ability to underpinthis with a focus on governance and controls.Joseph Bernadus VeenstraNon-Executive Director (50 Years)Jos Veenstra is currently responsible for investments andcorporate development at Air France-KLM. He has extensiveexperience in leading complex airline-related M&A projects andholds several board positions in a wide variety of companiesthat are closely related to the aviation industry. Among thesecompanies include: Epcor in Amsterdam, SkyNRG in Amsterdam,KLM UK Engineering in Norwich, KLM E&M Malaysia and KLMHealth Services. Jos is also responsible for managing KLM’sinnovation fund that invests in start-up companies withinnovative products that support the aviation industry.She is a co-founder of the First Africa Group, an Africacross-border Corporate Finance Advisory firm which had apresence in Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lagos which she andher colleagues sold to Standard Chartered Bank in 2009. Thefirm was then rebranded as Standard Chartered Securitieswhere she was Managing Director responsible for East AfricaM&A and Equity Capital Markets advisory. She was also amember of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya’s Top Team, theexecutive committee of the Bank that oversees the Bank’sbusiness in Kenya. Wanjiku has also served as a Non-ExecutiveDirector on the Boards of East African Breweries and EquityBank, both listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. Prior toco-founding First Africa, she worked with SG Warburg (whichwas since acquired by UBS) in its Corporate Finance division inLondon and Johannesburg.Wanjiku was a member of the Vision 2030 Technical Committeethat was chaired by the then Head of Civil Service and whichwas tasked with preparing Kenya’s Vision 2030. She was also amember of the Capital Markets Master Plan Steering Committeewhich in 2014 delivered the blue print for the transformationof Kenya’s Capital Markets, a flagship project under Kenya’sVision 2030.Wanjiku holds an LLB, University of Nairobi and an LLMGeorgetown University, USA and is an Advocate of the HighCourt of Kenya and an Attorney & Counselor at Law of NewYork State. In 2003, she was honored by the President ofKenya when he conferred upon her the Moran of the BurningSpear (MBS) National Award for service to the Nation ofKenya, in recognition of the pioneering role played as a womanin enterprise in the Capital Markets sector.Jason Kap-kirwokNon-Executive Director (57 Years)Jason Kap-kirwok is the Senior Regional Director and Head ofthe EAC-TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) Partnership Programmebased in Arusha, Tanzania. In this position, he is a member ofthe senior management team of TMEA.Jos holds an MA in Business Economics from the Universityof Groningen (Netherlands) and is a holder of a postgraduatedegree as Chartered Accountant (CPA). Prior to his currentposition, Jos worked as an auditor for KPMG and wasVice President Finance & Control for KLM’s Engineering &Maintenance division.Prior to this appointment, Kap-kirwok was the Kenya CountryDirector for TMEA. He joined TMEA from SBP Consult – aconsultancy he set up in 2004 and through which he consultedfor airlines across Africa, among others. His last assignmentbefore joining TMEA was a long-term contract with the WorldBank to support the 19 countries of the Common Market forEastern & Southern Africa (COMESA) to integrate regional andnational strategic planning. Kap-kirwok was also the SeniorDirector and Head of Corporate Strategy and OperationalChange for Heifer International, a US-based developmentorganisation with a historical footprint in 125 countries.Wanjiku MuganeNon-Executive Director (53 Years)Wanjiku Mugane is an entrepreneur and Investment Banker.She is the Founder CEO of Fedha Connect Limited, a CorporateFinance Advisory firm which provides M&A Advisory andintermediates capital in East Africa covering various sectorsincluding FMCG, Mid and Downstream oil & gas, financialservices, agribusiness and real estate development, in theprivate equity and debt capital markets.Kap-kirwok has also previously worked for the Kenya AirwaysGroup as the Group Director for Corporate Strategy andIndustry Affairs, and the Chief of Strategic Planning andResearch for the 20 member Common Market for East AndSouthern Africa, COMESA. He has served in boards of manyorganisations including in the strategy committee of theNairobi Securities Exchange and KenCargo Airlines Limited.He has taught air transport management as a visiting lecturerfor the City University of London and financial management11

His book, ‘I Blame the Sky’,won the 2013 Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature, Children’sEnglish Category. He has also published two poetrycollections (Heartbeats of the Mind and Loud Monologues,Silent Dialogues), a novella for young adults (The Heart isa Reluctant Nomad), and a collection of opinion articles(Telling it to the Birds). He has a forthcoming novel – TheSpeed of Sin – published in early 2016.Kap-kirwok, with the help of friends, helped build the firstmodern school library for Chemoge Secondary School inMt. Elgon sub-county. For this and other contributions in theeducation sector, he was nominated by Bungoma County andhonoured during the 2014 National Heroes Day (MashujaaDay) in October 2014.Kap-kirwok is a graduate of the University of Nairobi (BSc),Eastern University (MBA), Wharton Business School (Certificatein Strategy) and University of Cape Town (Certificatein Leadership).Festus W. King’ori(Alternate to Dr. Kamau Thugge) (54 Years)Mr. King’ori is the Alternate to the Principal Secretary/National Treasury. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degreefrom the University of Nairobi and is finalising an MBA fromJKUAT. Festus holds a post graduate certificate in InvestmentAppraisal and Management from Harvard University, amongothers. He has also undergone extensive training in generalmanagement, strategic leadership and financial management.Festus has extensive experience in public policy, particularlywith regard to public investments, gained from local andinternational institutions, having worked on secondment bythe GoK to the World Bank. Festus has also served on severalother boards in the same capacity. He is trained in corporategovernance and is a full member of the Kenya Instituteof Management.Mr. Nicholas Bodo(Alternate to Prof. Paul Mwangi) (49 Years)Mr. Bodo holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from OsmaniaUniversity, India. He is a Certified Public Secretary (K) andholds a Graduate Diploma in Aviation Management from theNational University of Singapore & the Singapore AviationAcademy and a Certificate in Air Law from the Egyptian12Aviation Academy. He is currently pursuing a Masters ofBusiness Administration from Laikipia University. He startedhis career in the Ministry of Transport as an Administrator inthe position of Assistant Secretary III and rose through theranks to Senior Assistant Secretary before being elevated toChief Air Transport Officer. He was also the Acting DirectorGeneral, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority from December, 2008to July, 2009 and Acting Managing Director, Kenya AirportsAuthority from July 2016 to November 2016. He is currentlythe Deputy Director and Heads the Air Transport Divisionin the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing andUrban Development.Professor Paul Mwangi Maringa(PHD), MAAK: Non-Executive Director (58 Years)Professor Paul Mwangi Maringa is the Principal Secretary forthe State Department of Transport in the Ministry of Transportand Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development of theRepublic of Kenya. The role of the Ministry is to deliver Kenya’sambitious plans to have a world class transport and logisticssystem for the country that will contribute to the realisationof Kenya’s national vision to be middle income country before2030. Prior to his appointment as Principal Secretary, he wasthe Strategic Advisor for Planning and Project Managementof Workforce Development Authority (WDA), Kigali, Rwanda.Prior to this he was the Vice-Chancellor of Kigali Institute ofScience and Technology (KIST), Kigali, Rwanda.Professor Maringa is credited with having pioneered theSchool of Architecture and Building Sciences (SABS) at JomoKenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)and the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design(FAED) at KIST in Rwanda.Professor Maringa holds a Bachelor’s degree of Architecturefrom the University of Nairobi, a Masters of Arts in Planning(Urban & Regional Planning) from the University of Nairobiand a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Planning (PHD)from JKUAT.

In 2005, Dick wasappointed to Head the Internal Audit function and in 2008, Headof Financial Control, a role he held till 2013 when he took over asthe General Manager for KQ Cargo.Prior to joining Kenya Airways, he worked with Ernst and YoungPublic Accountants for eight years as an Accountant and BusinessConsultant. Dick is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) anda Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). He became Director of Operations for the Benelux,UK and Ireland in 1994.
