Medicalhomes foster ongoing partnerships between patientsand their personal clinicians, instead of approachingcare as the sum of episodic office visits. Research shows that medical homes can lead to higherquality and lower costs, and can improve patient andprovider reported experiences of care.“NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home Recognitionraises the bar in defining high-quality care by emphasizing access, health information technology and coordinated care focused on patients,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “Recognition show that United Community Health Center has the tools, systemsand resources to provide its patients with the right care,at the right time.”To earn recognition, which is valid for threeyears, United Community Health Center demonstratedthe ability to meet the program’s key elements, embodying characteristics of the medical home. However, itis important to note that this process is not just about sustainability for theorganization and the financial implications of employee turnover. Of coursethese things are very important and a key part of the consideration, but itreally comes down to our staff. The success of this organization is highlydependent on the success and satisfaction of our staff. As wediscover needed changes or improvements, or have new and excitingthings to share, we have to have a good system to inform the staff. Theorganization has grown exponentially in its more than 30 years of existenceand keeping the small company feel is an organizational goal, however, itis also a tall order to fill. One of the ways the management team hasdecided to handle this is through an annual “All-Staff” training. 2015brought a lot of new faces and new discussions to the table for the staff. The event was held at Pima Community College’s Center for PerformingArts in Green Valley. The location allows the staff to join together in thelarge auditorium and meeting rooms for group discussion and also offersthe availability to break off into smaller groups or departments for individualized trainings and discussion as needed. The training and developmentthat occurs is vital to the continued forward progress of the organizationbut it is also a key component of the internal structure and stability. Following the training, input from the employees is gathered to use in planningfor future trainings and this part keeps communication open and ideasflowing. The All-Staff training team measures these successes and challenges and strategizes ways to make each one better than the one before.
